Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band’s new single, a version of “Downtown Train” has a backstory with Rod Stewart
Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band have a bit of a backstory regarding the new track released today "Downtown Train".
Seger recorded “Downtown Train” in early ’89, and mentioned it to Rod Stewart during a visit to London that summer.
"The next thing I knew,” Seger told Billboard, “a month later he recorded 'Downtown Train' in London, and two months later, he recorded it in the same studio I recorded it in Los Angeles." Once Stewart’s version was released and became a hit, Seger was pretty much forced to bury his version, for the time being; more than 20 years have passed since then.
Seger's current version of "Downtown Train," freshly recorded for an upcoming new album, will be released to radio Monday morning.
Billboard reports that Stewart and his representatives have long denied that he stole the idea to record "Downtown Train," and any hard feelings have settled over the years. Stewart offered an olive branch, of sorts, by recording Seger's "Still the Same" as the title track of his 2006 covers album "Still the Same...Great Rock Classics of Our Time."
Seger and the Silver Bullet Band are currently rehearsing for a US tour, which kicks off March 26 in Toledo.

Deep Purple held a press conference last Tuesday, February 22, in Mexico City ahead of the group's short tour of Mexico.
When asked if there are any plans for Deep Purple to record a new studio album soon, vocalist Ian Gillan, replied, "I guess it's about time, isn't it?! So we're gonna get together and have a writing session quite soon. And if we get excited, then we'll probably have another [album finished and ready for release] shortly after that. We'll see how it goes. But there's no plans. But I think we're getting poked by various connections who would like to see another Deep Purple record. So I think it's about time."
Deep Purple released a live album last year called "Space Truckin' Round the World Live 68-76". The two-disc set features rare live recordings from various concerts all over the world, including gigs in Tokyo, Paris and San Diego. The compilation, which features multiple band lineups, also features a detailed history of the group, individual concert details and photos. It was released as part of the 10th anniversary of Purple Records — the label that handles the band's music.
Deep Purple's 18th studio album, "Rapture of the Deep", was released in November 2005. It is the fourth studio CD from Deep Purple since guitarist Steve Morse joined the band in 1994. It was also the second album to feature veteran keyboardist Don Airey.

Ozzy Osbourne has been named as the Record Store Day Ambassador 2011. "I now have the power to command you to attend Record Store Day, April 16th. Be there!"
Go to recordstoreday.com to hear a message from Ozzy himself.
"The Record Store Day Ambassador's main purpose is to claim the mantle of greatness that conveys the majesty of the amazing array of releases made on the world's only holiday devoted to music. We were thrilled when the inaugural position was held in 2009 by the Eagles of Death Metal front man Jesse "Boots Electric" Hughes, and was then followed in 2010 by Queens Of The Stone Age/Them Crooked Vultures' Joshua Homme," says Record Store Day co-founder Michael Kurtz. "We really didn't know who could top this trajectory of camp and circumstance and, needless to say, we were gobsmacked when Ozzy stepped up to the plate."
Ozzy fans who come out to support Record Store Day will have the first chance to purchase a special 7" vinyl single of Diary of a Madman's "Flying High Again" (with a live version of "I Don't Know" as the B side), along with full-length vinyl versions of the newly expanded 30th anniversary editions of his "Blizzard of Ozz" and "Diary of a Madman" albums.
Other highlights include rare releases by Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Derek and the Dominos, Franz Ferdinand, Pearl Jam, Deftones and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Among the special releases: a 7” single from Derek and the Dominos that features the unreleased “Got to Get Better in a Little While” with “Layla” on the other side; Hendrix’s “Fire” on 7” of red vinyl or on a three-track CD single; AC/DC’s “Shoot to Thrill” and “War Machine” on a 7” vinyl single; and full-length vinyl LP versions of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’s self-titled debut and "You’re Gonna Get It." Deftones will release "Covers", and it will be limited to 5,000 copies. On the album, the band take on such diverse tracks as The Cars’ “Drive,” The Smiths’ “Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,” Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” and Sade’s “No Ordinary Love.” Many of the songs on the album have been previously available as B-sides or iTunes bonus tracks, but they will be compiled for the first time on the vinyl LP.
Another interesting releases is a Franz Ferdinand EP that features covers of their songs by other artists, including LCD Soundsystem, Debbie Harry and Peaches. In other cases, bands have teamed up to “split” a single, which is the case with Green Day and Husker Du (“Don’t Know if You are Lonely”), Mastodon and ZZ Top (“Just Got Paid”) and Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Ramones (“Havana Affair”).
Other items include the previously announced Flaming Lips vinyl album box set and a replica of the original vinyl EP for The Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar.”
Def Leppard, Twisted Sister, Duff McKagan's Loaded, Alice Cooper, Alter Bridge, Buckcherry, Cheap Trick, The Cult, Disturbed, Black Stone Cherry, Linkin Park, Rob Zombie, Hollywood Undead, Thin Lizzy, Mr. Big, System Of A Down, Korn, The Damned Things and many more have already been announced for Download Festival 2011. Held in Donnington Park, Leicestershire, UK; the festival is probably the biggest rock show of the year in the world
