P.O.D. rock and talk in S.L.O. with Otherwise and Stars In Stereo (video & photos)

P.O.D. rock and talk in S.L.O. with Otherwise and Stars In Stereo (video & photos)

There is nothing like seeing a major rock band that has sold over 12 million albums worldwide play a small club. Add two other kick ass opening acts and it makes for a night of up close and personal mind-blowing ROCK. P.O.D. brought their current tour with support acts Otherwise and Stars In Stereo to SLO Brew in San Luis Obispo, CA on September 15 and all three bands were ready to deliver.

I had a chance to talk to Stars In Stereo pre-show in the "world famous" Bubblegum Alley near the venue. The band includes Bec Hollcraft on lead vocals, Jordan McGraw on guitar, Ryan "Frogs" McCormack on bass and Drew Lanagan on drums. They have their debut self-titled album out now and it is full of hook laden rock with an edge. Steller musicianship and the vocals of Hollcraft connect on a universal level and I am expecting continued growth and exposure for this great band. It is fantastic to see another female fronted kick ass rock act. When Stars In Stereo tour with Halestorm later in the year, having two female fronted rock acts on the same bill is sure to get notice and have influence.

We talk about the band's origins, the current and upcoming tours, who they couldn't believe they have met so far in their time in the music business and what's in store for the future for Stars In Stereo.

Stars In Stereo/P.O.D. interview photos by Andrew Polowy. For more photos of Stars In Stereo in San Luis Obispo, give the Marshall of Rock facebook page a like. Check out the band's latest video for the track 'Every Last Thing.' Interesting, intense and kick ass video!

I also had a chance to talk with P.O.D. guitarist Marcos Curiel pre-show, and we kicked in a little rock sports football talk about his hometown San Diego Chargers, as well as touching on the band's longevity, the success of the current album, the upcoming tour of the Far East and possibly Russia, how producer Howard Benson got the band back in the studio after a long layoff, the possible P.O.D. acoustic album and tour, and the continued plans for the band. It is always truly a pleasure to interview someone who is part of a very successful band, that is down to earth and projects positivity and a true appreciation for being able to play music for a living. That is Marcos and the rest of the band, and I wish them continued success and even more popularity in the future.

After a great set from Stars In Stereo, Las Vegas rockers Otherwise hit the stage and played tracks from their latest album 'True Love Never Dies' and their first E.P. to an appreciative crowd. Otherwise has had major success and airplay with the tracks 'Die For You,' 'I Don't Apologize (1000 Pictures),' and 'Soldiers,' and they were all included, with vocalist Adrian Patrick, guitarists Ryan Patrick and Andrew Pugh, drummer Corky Gainsford and bassist Vassilios Metropolous all connecting with the crowd. Metropolous even jumped up on the bar at one point in the show, with frontman Patrick coming down into the crowd during the band's last song of the set and involving the crowd. Great set and great guys are Otherwise!

P.O.D. absolutely crushed it, hitting the stage shorty after 10pm, and played for close to 90 minutes, with the crowd digging the vibe in the club seeing one of their favorite bands. It definitely was a family affair, with Otherwise drummer Corky Gainsford's kids in attendance and coming out to sing a verse during their set, then vocalist Sonny Sandoval's son coming out for some percussion and background vocal during their set as well.

It was truly awesome to see P.O.D. in S.L.O. in an intimate setting. The band went from 20,000 at the Aftershock the day before, to playing in front of 200 in a small club for an evening I won't forget! Thanks for coming to San Luis Obispo P.O.D.!! The Doobie Brothers bring the party to Vina Robles Amphitheatre (photos)

The anticipation for a great night of music was in the air at the Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles, California on September 14, with the Doobie Brothers adding to the fantastic lineup of concerts for the inaugural season at the beautiful amphitheatre nestled in the heart of Wine Country. After an entertaining set by openers Occasional Mustache, who describe their sound as 'Californicana'— "country-rock soaked in sun, surf, and bud," the crowd was ready to party on this Saturday night show with the legendary band who need to be inducted soon into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Doobies set the tone from the start with classic cuts 'Jesus Is Just Alright With Me,' 'Rockin' Down the Highway,' 'Take Me In Your Arms,' 'Depending On You' and 'Clear As the Driven Snow.' The crowd was with them the whole way, ready for a great evening of quality rock. (click to enlarge picture)

That was followed by the tracks 'Brighter Day' and the title track from their 2010 album 'World Gone Crazy.' The Doobies went back to 1975 next for 'Neal's Fandango' and then a fantastic acoustic sit-down with Patrick Simmons and John McFee blending together like the fine wine of the Vina Robles Winery. (click photo to enlarge)

Patrick Simmons handled the lead vocal next on 'Slack Key Soquiel Rag,' as the crowd's appreciation continued at that Saturday night party level, with a standing ovation.

The Doobies followed that with amazing renditions of 'Eyes of Silver,' 'Takin' It to the Streets,' and blues leaning 'Don't Start Me Talkin.' Long time members Tom Johnston (Vocals/Guitar), Patrick Simmons (Vocals/Guitar), John McFee (Guitar/Strings/Vocals), Marc Russo (Saxophone) and Guy Allison (Keyboards/Vocals) all showcased their amazing individual talents, as did bassist John Cowan (with the band since 2010) and drummers Ed Toth (since 2005) and Tony Pia (since 2010).

'Black Water' and 'Long Train Runnin' followed, with an encore after the crowd chants of "Doobies...Doobies...Doobies!," brought the band back to wrap up the night with 'China Grove,' 'Road Angel,' and 'Listen to the Music.'

It was truly a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance from The Doobies. Let's hope the induction committee sees fit to elect the band in 2014! Boz Scaggs brings his soul to Chumash Casino Resort (photos)

Boz Scaggs made a return visit to the Samala Showroom at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, CA. on September 12 and once again showed why he has been and continues to be a master of his craft. Boz Scaggs has seen it all, done it all and been a part of it all in the music world for over 50 years. From his early beginnings and friendship with Steve Miller, to his latest album project 'Memphis,' Boz has always shown integrity, appreciation, and a thorough professionalism in all the music he has ever released. And on this night once again, Boz surrounded himself with masterful musicians to accentuate what he offers. Boz Scaggs set up

Boz and his fantastic band took the stage in an understated manner and proceeded to capture the audience with 'Runnin' Blues,' and two songs from the latest album 'Memphis,' 'Dry Spell,' and 'Mixed Up Shook Up.' After a stellar rendition of 'Sierra,' Scaggs talked about his friend F. Warren Hellman, who was a mainstay in the arts in Boz's hometown of San Francisco. Boz talked about a memorial he played on the beach for the billionaire music aficionado, then went into acoustic versions of Tony Joe White’s 'Rainy Night in Georgia,' and the folk/blues standard 'Corrina, Corrina.' More cuts from 'Memphis' followed, as did his huge hits.

Boz Scaggs band

Boz played all the big hits and album tracks including 'Georgia' and 'Miss Sun,' which showcased the amazing vocal talents of Miss Monet Owens on a mash-up of Sly & The Family Stones’ 'Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)' and Sam and Dave’s 'I Thank You.' The crowd energy continued into his most well-know tracks 'Lowdown' and 'Lido Shuffle.' Boz and the band played two encores, with more tracks from 'Memphis' and one of his signature tunes 'Breakdown.' The show wrapped up with 'Somebody Lend Me A Dime' and no change was needed as the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the always on point and professional Boz Scaggs.

Halestorm to release second E.P. ‘ReAniMate 2.0: The CoVeRs eP’ on October 15

Halestorm will release their new EP, 'ReAniMate 2.0: The CoVeRs eP,' on October 15. It's the second EP of covers from the band, following up 2011’s 'ReAniMate: The CoVeRs eP.' The bands covered on the new release include Judas Priest, AC/DC, Pat Benatar, Fleetwood Mac, Marilyn Manson, and Daft Punk.

“Like our first ReAniMate EP, the songs included here are a collection of both our favorite songs and songs to challenge ourselves,” said Halestorm frontwoman Lzzy Hale. “We decided to go more ‘bare bones’ with this EP, meaning minimal production with live, gritty performances. We recorded this EP the week of the Grammys, so the excitement and debauchery you hear through your speakers is very real. We hope all our fans have as much fun with ReAniMate: 2.0 as we did!”

Halestorm will be touring the U.S. in early October, then hook up with Alter Bridge for a European trek, followed by more U.S. dates to wrap up 2013. For more info go to:
