Rock Picks of the Week: KXM, Black Stone Cherry, Vandenberg’s MoonKings, Winger, Fuel, Kill Devil Hill
Power Trio Supergroup KXM kicks off Rock Picks this week with their track 'Rescue Me' from their self-titled debut album on Rat Pak Records. KXM is comprised of dUg Pinnick (King’s X) on vocals/bass, George Lynch of (Dokken, Lynch Mob) on guitars and drummer Ray Luzier (Korn). The band takes its name from the combination of the member’s other projects: K from Korn, X from King’s X and M from Lynch Mob.
KXM formed in early 2013 when dUg, George and Ray spoke about trying to get together to jam. The guys came together and the self-titled debut, KXM, was born.
The album is one of the best rock releases of the years thus far, full of powerful tracks from the opening cut 'Stars,' to the lead single, 'Rescue Me.' Every song on the record (which was recorded in a mere 8 days) is quality, showcases each members playing and displaying hard rock, funk, and blues influences. The next single will be 'Gun Fight,' which the band have already filmed a video for. The band have yet to schedule any concerts to play this material live, but they are bound to do so and I for one will have to be there to witness it. Let's hope this is more than a one-off project and these guys continue to make music together. I am interested to see how the band progresses and where they take us musically in the future.
Black Stone Cherry 'Me And Mary Jane'
Black Stone Cherry are back with their crunchy new track 'Me and Mary Jane,' which is the first single from their upcoming new album, 'Magic Mountain.' The Kentucky rockers fourth studio release is due on May 6th, with pre-orders now available. “Me and Mary Jane” is also available for purchase on iTunes.
Bassist Jon Lawhon says of the new album, "A lot of rock music today doesn’t have any soul. It’s all really bland. There’s no attitude. There’s no heart. We all grew up on ‘70s rock, Southern rock, country music and bluesmen like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. On this album, more so than ever, those elements are all in the forefront."
The band recorded with Producer Joe Barresi who's worked with Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age and Tool, among others on the album.
Black Stone Cherry will hit the road in the U.S. supporting Seether for a tour kicking off April 22nd at The Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge, LA. The band will also play numerous festivals during the months of April and May. Check out the itenary below:

It is great to have former Vandenberg and Whitesnake guitarist Adrian Vandenberg back with his new band, Vandenberg’s MoonKings. The band's debut effort is out now through Mascot Records and is full of quality tracks that hold up against Adrian's best work from the past.
"The last record I made was with Whitesnake in 1998. Now that I've announced my return, I am really overwhelmed by the thousands of enthusiastic reactions that I've gotten from all over the world. It amazes me how faithful the fans have remained. It's just bizarre," Vandenberg says. And with a smile he adds: "And it just so happens that the MoonKings album is the best record I've ever made. Well, in my modest opinion, anyway. People probably expected the obvious classic rock, but I didn't want to go that route semi-automatically. I wanted to build a bridge between the greatest rock of the seventies and that of today, and I have the feeling that worked out very well."
Why was he away so long you ask? After 13 years in Whitesnake, Adrian needed a break. He was completely idle during his time away from music. He focused on his other passion: Art. There was so much interest in his paintings, that several leading European galleries planned exhibitions of his work. He also was busy as a Dad to his daughter.
The band came together beginning back in 2011, when Adrian was asked to write a song for FC Twente, the football club from his hometown of Enschede that had become the champions of the Dutch premier league the year before. He recruited Jan Hoving, who had previously opened for Whitesnake in Holland several years later, to sing the track, then because the song was going to be performed at FC Twente's victory celebrations for a crowd of 60,000, Adrian needed a rhythm section. He found drummer Mart 'Martman' Nijen-Es through a friend, but he had ironically met Mart about 10 years prior when Adrian was judging a talent contest and came across the then 13 year old drummer. Adrian met his future bass player the same way: "Mart had a buddy he'd been playing with for many years, bass player Sem 'the Sham' Christoffel. Believe it or not, I judged Sem in a different talent contest around the same time I first saw Mart, and he impressed me enormously by casually playing a Jaco Pastorius-like piece. And I let him win as well!"
The band was meant to be, and after that intial performance, Adrian decided these were the guys to surround himself with for a new project. They recorded the MoonKings album with vintage equipment at the famous Wisseloord Studios near Amsterdam, working with tubes compressors, a Neumann microphone from the 1960's, and recording everything with a Neve desk from the 1970's.
Former Whitesnake bandmate David Coverdale makes a guest appearance on the closing ballad 'Sailing Ships,' but first check out the single and lead track on the record 'Lust And Lies,' followed by another video for the mid-tempo track 'Breathing.' The band have been on tour in Europe of late, with no U.S. books as of yet, so here is another band on Rock Picks this week that will be a must see. Maybe KXM and Vandenberg's Moonkings can tour the U.S. together. How fantastic would that be?

Winger 'Rat Race' & 'Midnight Driver Of A Love Machine' and 'Tin Soldier'
It's the 25th Anniversary of Winger and they are back with their first new album in five years, ‘Better Days Comin’,’ which is out April 22 on Frontiers Records. The band have already released three videos for the tracks 'Rat Race' & 'Midnight Driver Of A Love Machine' and 'Tin Soldier,' all solid rock cuts. 'Better Days Comin' is an amazing new record giving members Kip Winger (ex-Alice Cooper), Reb Beach (Whitesnake), Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse) and John Roth (Starship, Giant) a showcase for their immense talents. The entire album kicks ass and already looks to be destined as one of my Top 10 albums of the year.
Check out the triple shot of the band below and make sure you get your copy of 'Better Days Comin.' A deluxe edition of the new album includes one audio bonus track and a DVD including a documentary "Making of the album" and two videoclips.
Kip Winger explains, "We drew from our past to elaborate on our future. The band is stronger than ever, and very excited about the music on this record. We feel it exemplifies our true sound in every way.”
As the fast-paced video’s time-lapse images of a big-city workday illustrate very effectively, ‘Rat Race’ takes a hard look at the pace we’ve set for ourselves in the modern world. “With ‘Rat Race’ we took the term ‘the human race’ literally,” Winger explains. “Everyday on this planet is a fight to the death. No matter how fast you run, someone is always gaining on you.”
You can pre-order the deluxe edition of ‘Better Days Comin” and receive a download of ‘Rat Race’ right now at itunes.apple.com.

Fuel ' Soul To Preach To'
Fuel have been around since 1993, but with vocalist Bret Scallions back in the fold for a new album for the first time in 10 years, the true "sound" of Fuel is back on with new music. The band's latest album (released March 4), 'Puppet String' on MegaForce Records is bringing it back to the band's heydey.
“Rock and roll is very much alive and well on this album,” says Scallions. “We were simply trying to write the best songs we possibly could." Brett wrote the album with guitarist Andy Andersson and bassist Brad Stewart, formerly of Shinedown. “With Andy and Brad, I found the unity I’d always craved.”

Kill Devil Hill wrap up this week with a track that should have been the one to break this band at active rock radio. Why a band like Kill Devil Hill doesn't get significant airplay on today's rock stations is beyond me. The band, featuring Rex Brown (Pantera, Down) on bass, Mark Zavon (Ratt, W.A.S.P., 40 Cycle Hum) on guitar and Jason "Dewey" Bragg (Pissing Razors) will continue after the departure of legendary drummer Vinny Appice (DIO, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell). He has been replaced by Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative, Danzig, Black Label Society), with the band having just wrapped up a tour with Killswitch Engage in Australia. The band has two U.S. dates scheduled, at Rock On The Range in Columbus, Ohio on May 16 and Rocklahoma in Pryor, Oklahoma on May 24. Glad to hear that this impressive band will continue to hopefully break out on a wider level like they should.
The video for the track "Leave It All Behind," is from from the band's sophomore album, "Revolution Rise."
Comments Brown: "'Leave It All Behind' was shot with a very different approach for us. It's a story board video that intertwines the band with a guy that has faced some apocalyptic demons in his own mind. We shot the video at an old missile site in Southern California that had been burned out by fires years ago."
Sacramento, California's own TESLA are back with a new album "Simplicity," to be released in Europe in June on Frontiers Records.
"Simplicity" will be released on June 6th in Europe, with a U.S. release date still to be announced. The album has 14 new songs offering a ride of energy that doesn't come easy for a band of rookies much less a band whose been doing this for over 20 years. “Simplicity” is TESLA’s seventh all original studio album which follows a 6-years creative break from the release of the previous album “Forever More”.
After a string of shows in the USA in 2013, the band went back into the studio in early 2014 and came out with a new album, which goes straight back to the TESLA roots. The band worked and produced it as they did with “Into the Now”, their successful come-back album from 2004. Helped by the legendary Tom Zutaut who was the man behind the best TESLA albums, this new album rocks from start to finish, showing a variety of emotions where each song has its own twist--not sounding like another.
The first new song off the new album "Taste My Pain", was released last summer digitally via iTunes and Amazon. The track was recorded during a two-day (June 5-6, 2013) session at J Street Recorders in Sacramento. The new song is, according to the band, "A heavier song with a hard-driving beat and TESLA trademark blazing guitars."
Guitarist Frank Hannon says about “Simplicity”: “I must say that this new TESLA album is really gonna be awesome. We went in more prepared with the songs and ideas way more than Forever More, and the style is pure TESLA back to our roots. I truly believe you guys are gonna love it!”
“The opening track is called MP3”, continues Hannon “and starts off with an opus intro that orchestrates into a heavy slow groove with lyrics about technology and how we miss simplicity, vinyl albums, family values...and has a heavy ass riff! Then we segue into a rock n roll song called Ricochet that talks about uncle Ted...can't wait to play this stuff live!”
“Simplicity” in the Frontiers version released across Europe, will include the following songs:
M P 3
Rise and Fall
Cross My Heart
Other than Me
Break of Dawn
Burnout to Fade
Life is a River
'Til that Day
Burnout to Fade (writing demo version)*
Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider will once again lead hundreds of motorcyclists all in the name of charity. Dee’s annual ride is set for September 7 at Town of Hempstead Lido Beach Park. The event marks the 12th year of Dee’s ride, and the second to benefit Long Island Cares, the regional food bank and hunger assistance organization founded by the late Harry Chapin in 1980. Over 1,500 riders and guests participated Dee’s ride last year.
"There are more than 320,000 Long Islanders in need of emergency food and community support services because of reductions in critical programs like food stamps, unemployment and other safety net supports," says Dee.
"I've seen the work of Long Island Cares first hand and know how important their services are for families, children, and others who rely upon the assistance of charitable organizations just to get by. We're very fortunate that Harry Chapin had the vision to establish this great organization and food bank thirty-four years ago, and it has grown to meet the changing needs of our communities with some very creative programs like their satellite programs in Freeport and Lindenhurst, along with their mobile outreach units for our veterans, seniors, and the homeless.
I'm very proud to continue Harry Chapin's great work and support Long Island Cares. I hope that many more people will join me on September 7th and fight hunger in our communities." Get more info on the great cause at: deesnidersride.com

California Breed 'Sweet Tea' and 'Midnight Oil'
The impressive hard rock power trio, California Breed, which consists of Glenn Hughes (vocals, bass), Jason Bonham (drums) and Andrew Watt (guitar) have released their first video and single in the U.S., and have now also put out a kick ass lyric video for a second track on their self-titled forthcoming album.
The three-man line-up got together as California Breed for the first time last year after Hughes was introduced to the newcomer from New York by their mutual friend Julian Lennon. “Julian was having an exhibition of his photographs at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in LA,” Glenn recalls, “and he said, ‘You must meet this guy, he’s the most fantastic guitarist – who turned out to be Andrew.”
Reconvening at Hughes’ Hollywood home a few days later, “The chemistry was just instant,” says Hughes. “We immediately wrote two songs together, Chemical Rain and Solo, both of which have ended up on the album. That’s when I called Jason and said you’ve gotta come down right now.”
“The energy when I walked in the room was crackling,” recalls Bonham. “I was so pleased. Glenn and I had not only really locked in as a rhythm section in BCC but we’d started writing together and we both really wanted to keep that good feeling going.”
Recording with Dave Cobb (who also is Rival Sons producer) at the producer’s own studio in Nashville, added all the finishing touches, said Glenn. “I’d gotten into Dave’s work via the Rival Sons, who I know and really love. But Dave has done a lot of great stuff. That whole Nashville trip which Dave is a part of. Well, me and Jason don’t want to sound like anyone else, we already sound like ourselves, but we felt we needed some fresh energy – and Dave absolutely brought it.”
At Cobb’s insistence, every vocal was recorded live as the band was playing. “Totally the reverse of what I’m used to,” added Glenn. “But I went into that aggressive rock soulfulness and everything down to the whispers, it was all done live! I enjoyed myself so much, just going for it.”
California Breed features equal co-writing credits among the three-man lineup. “It’s proper rock,” Hughes says, “but at the same time it’s very now. Andrew is as influenced by Mick Ronson as he is Jimmy Page.” “This kid is amazing,” says Bonham. “The first time we met I thought he looked like the white Jimi Hendrix. And he plays in the studio likes he’s onstage!”
“I grew up listening to all the grunge bands,” says Watt, “but my dad always played me The Who, the Stones and Led Zeppelin so that became my music too.
“This kid is amazing,” says Bonham. “The first time we met I thought he looked like the white Jimi Hendrix. And he plays in the studio likes he’s onstage!”
California Breed’s self-titled debut album will be released by Frontiers Records in Europe on May 16th, and in the UK and US on May 19th. It will be available as a CD, digital download and a Deluxe Edition CD + DVD featuring the bonus song 'Solo,' two video clips and a documentary. Fans that pre-order the digital download on iTunes will receive an instant download of the first single, Sweet Tea upon ordering. It is also available as a pre-order from Amazon in CD format and as a CD Deluxe Edition CD + DVD.
California Breed’s track listing:
1. The Way
2. Sweet Tea
3. Chemical Rain
4. Midnight Oil
5. All Falls Down
6. The Grey
7. Days They Come
8. Spit You Out
*Deluxe Edition includes Solo bonus track and a DVD including 2 video clips (The Way and Sweet Tea), plus documentary
Check out the videos for the first U.S. single 'Sweet Tea', and the animated lyric video for the track 'Midnight Oil,' which was created by Nev Todoroic who spearheads the interactive media production company The Young Astronauts.
Says California Breed’s guitarist, Andrew Watt - "We wanted a lyric video that would make people want to watch this song in addition to just listen to it, one that would highlight the bombastic grooves of the track and convey the rhythm of the message. I turned to my friends, the Young Astronauts, whose previous videos have hundreds of millions of views, but they don’t work with a lot of rock bands and I thought THAT’S the magic, right there."
“It’s a refreshing animated video that really captures the lyrical concert and message of the Midnight Oil single,” says California Breed’s vocalist and bassist, Glenn Hughes. “We didn’t want to make a run-of-the-mill lyric video. The animation perfectly captures the raw energy, lyrical content and the message of what Midnight Oil is really all about... rock n roll!!”
Midnight Oil is the UK’s first single taken from California Breed’s self-titled debut album released by Frontiers Records in Europe on May 16th, and in the UK and US on May 19th.
Metallica 'Ronnie Rising Medley'
Metallica couldn’t pick just one Ronnie James Dio song to record for the tribute/benefit compilation 'This Is Your Life,' so they picked four. The nine-minute 'Ronnie Rising Medley,' puts together four classic Rainbow tracks that featuring Ronnie in a kick-ass tribute to their mentor and friend.
Lars Ulrich recently told Rolling Stone: “[Dio's] music is so much a part of what’s in Metallica’s DNA, the harder, edgier, blues-based hard rock from the Seventies,” he says. “It was fairly effortless to put this together, because it’s something that we were all reared on. I don’t recall sitting there in a band meeting or anything deciding what to play. Somebody starts playing Stargazer-which is sort of just like something that’s in our arsenal to jam – and then that whole period there, Tarot Woman, Kill the King, A Light in the Black-that’s just really effortless to jump into.”
Buckcherry 'Dreamin' Of You'
The latest single and video from Buckcherry's 'Confessions' album, shows the sensitive side of the band and delivers a positive message, about keeping hope and faith that the situation that it will work out with a particular person.
Vocalist Josh Todd recently told Loudwire: "It comes from being lost your whole life and feeling like you’re not a part of the majority, you know? When I was coming up I always felt like there were these little popular cliques in school and there was mainstream music, and I was never part of those types of movements. I was always on the outside looking in, and mostly by choice. It just didn’t feel right, and if something didn’t feel right for me, I wouldn’t go along with it just because other people were going along with it.
So ‘Dreamin’ of You’ is about how when you hook up with somebody and in the story there’s a love interest. There’s this kid in the story who is rough around the edges and has had kind of a colorful childhood and he meets this polar opposite of him, who on the outside, it looks like she’s got it all. She’s got all the material things and her life should be great, but on the inside, she’s a cutter. She has some dark secrets of her own, so ‘Dreamin’ of You’ is just like having hope and having blind faith that everything is going to work out."
The band continues on tour into the Summer with the following U.S. dates. Check them out if they are in your area:

Apr. 18 - San Antonio, TX - The Aztec Theater

Great White's 'Complicated' is the latest single from the band's latest release 'Elation' on Frontiers Records. The boogie-blues track is signature Great White, with fantastic musicianship by the entire band, a rockin’ guitar solo by Mark Kendall, great vocals by Terry Ilous, and a chorus that will catch you. For the new music video the band enlisted help from Mark Teague of Dream Haven Studios to create a multi-media narrative: a first for the band. “We really had a good time making the video and we hope the fans dig it. They will feel the positive energy coming from the song and video,” the band said.
With a futuristic storyline, the band appear via an orb as mini virtual versions of themselves straight off their CD. They really make a "connection" with the main character. Hardly any other band has influenced the Heavy Metal genre as much as German legends ACCEPT. Classics albums such as “Restless And Wild” (1982), “Balls To The Wall” (1983) and “Metal Heart” (1985), have inspired generations of new bands, and this has continued since their reunion in 2009. Both “Blood Of The Nations” (2010) and “Stalingrad” (2012) entered the charts globally ( #6 in Germany, #81 in the USA) and underline the premiere league status ACCEPT still have today.
Now ACCEPT announce the release of their new studio album: “Something happened to us, something subliminal and impetuous,” commented main composer Wolf Hoffmann. “It is wild and scary and it’s called “Blind Rage”!”
“Blind Rage”, just like its two predecessors has been produced, mixed and mastered by Andy Sneap. On July 18, 2014 “Blind Rage” will be released worldwide. “The cover artwork done by Daniel Goldsworthy shows the beast coming over us – in blind rage – all over the planet. Wherever we go, whenever you turn on the TV – there is blind rage in the works – either natural catastrophes or man-made madness”, the axe man of ACCEPT states.
In other Accept news, the band has partnered with Hellbrecht Optics for the band’s own line of glasses. Wolf Hoffmann says about the new line of eyewear: “Once you wear these, you'll want no other." Check the entire line out at: helbrecht.com
