Rock Picks of the Week: Chickenfoot, Jane’s Addiction (plus full 3D LG concert), Rise Against, ZZ Top, Papa Roach
The supergroup featuring Sammy Hagar, guitar wizard Joe Satriani, ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith that started as a tequila-soaked jam session in Mexico and went on to sell 500,000 copies of its 2009 debut LP are back with the new track “Big Foot”.
It’s from the upcoming album “Chickenfoot III”, produced by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica). The album will be released on September 27. The band may tour in November, but it will have to find another drummer. Chad Smith is busy with the red Hot Chili Peppers. Chickenfoot have auditioned numerous drummers, but have not made a decision on who will be pounding the skins for them on tour as of yet.

Activist rockers Rise Against are back with another Rock Pick of the Week for “Make It Stop (September’s Child) from the album “Endgame”. MTV has nominated Rise Against for a VMA for the Best Video With A Message. “Make It Stop (September’s Children)” is an important song and video pouring water on the fire of homophobia. The video was directed by Marc Klasfed and highlights the It Gets Better Project. Stop the bullshit bullying!

Coming off Rise Against’s performance at the epic L.A. Rising Festival with Rage Against The Machine, Tom Morello & Tim McIlrath of Rise Against have joined forces for The Justice Tour. The tour will bring them to Madison, WI, Cleveland, OH and Flint, MI this September with all profits benefiting The Nation Institute. Tom Morello stated, “This year’s Justice Tour aims to support independent media which is battling the mountain of disinformation and propaganda foisted on the public by right wing media barons. We will also return to the union battlegrounds of the Midwest to help steel the backbone of workers under siege.” Tim McIlrath added, “Playing with Tom on the steps of the Capitol building in Madison last February was an inspiring experience. I can’t wait to join him again for such an important cause. Media has become a battleground, and we’re out to even the odds.”
The Justice Tour:
September 5th – Madison, WI The Barrymore Theatre (All Ages)
September 6th – Cleveland, OH Grog Shop (All Ages)

Here’s the new ZZ Top track “Flyin’ High”. ZZ Top have been working on their new album with producer Rick Rubin, and it will be released before the end of the year.
“It sounds and feels like ‘Tres Hombres,’ with a few elements of the ‘Eliminator’ period thrown in,” says Billy Gibbons. “A pretty wide range, from basic blues to slightly more fancy stuff.” ZZ Top recorded at Shangri La Studios in Malibu, California with engineer Dave Sardy (Oasis, Jet). The trio then moved back to Texas, to Foam Box Recordings in Houston, with long-time engineer Joe Hardy. “It was the Sardy and Hardy party,” added Gibbons.
It’s good to have ZZ Top back with a new track. It is what you would expect from the trio, and I like the sound of it. Hooking up with Rick Rubin on this project has given ZZ Top a new determination and motivation. Check it out:
ZZ Top continue on tour through August and September. ZZ Top’s website is currently under construction, so get the dates here.
