Rock Picks of the Week: Jimi Hendrix, Something Unto Nothing, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 3 Doors Down, Crashdiet, Snakecharmer

Rock Picks of the Week kick off with a new track from a classic artist. The new Jimi Hendrix release 'People, Hell and Angels,' will be out on March 5th, featuring 12 previously unreleased Hendrix recordings from 1968 and 1969. On 'Somewhere,' Hendrix is joined by Buddy Miles on drums and Stephen Stills on bass. Hendrix was experimenting during this period with new sounds and musical directions for 'First Rays of the New Rising Sun,' the planned double-album follow-up to Electric Ladyland. A great track from one of our musical geniuses, and it is a fantastic thing to get some unreleased music from the legend.

"I'm The One", is the rocking new track from Something Unto Nothing (S.U.N.), the great new band featuring drummer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Brian Tichy on guitar (drums for Whitesnake, Billy Idol, Foreigner, Ozzy Osbourne, and T&N), Sass Jordan, (Canadian icon and Juno Award winner), Michael Devin (Whitesnake, Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience, Kenny Wayne Shepherd) on bass and Tommy Stewart (Godsmack, Lo Pro, Everclear, Fuel) on drums.

Something Unto Nothing (S.U.N.) is up next, with a rocking track form their forthcoming album. I'm the One', features blistering vocals from Canadian rocker and Juno winner Sass Jordan and the guitar skills from multi-instrumentalist Brian Tichy, who has played drums for Whitesnake, Billy Idol, Ozzy Osbourne, Foreigner, T&N, and more. Rounding out the band are bassist Michael Devin (Whitesnake, Jason Bonham, Moby Dicks) and Tommy Stewart on Drums (Godsmack, Fuel, Lo-Pro).

The band's self-titled debut album will be released on February 5th. Tichy's recently announced he was leaving his drum duties for Whitesnake to concentrate on S.U.N.. Tichy's recent mountain bike injury, where he broke his collarbone after a fall, won't have any effect on his guitar playing for the band. Bassist Michael Devin will continue his duties when needed with Whitesnake.

Previously working together is what brought Jordan and Tichy together in collaboration of the new music. "I had played drums on Sass's 'Rats' record," explains Tichy. "I knew she was one of the best rock singers going. So after many years, we reconnected and tried a bit of writing together." Both felt that in order to write the best, trend-free music they could, they needed to get away. They chose the mountains of Canyon Country and in an old, deserted shack S.U.N. was born. "We didn't realize where we going when we started out," says Jordan. "As we continued the songwriting path from 'Burned' to 'Mobile Again' to 'Nomad' and on ... The whole thing started to take shape in the form of a '70s odyssey, a time travel trajectory."

A great new band that is all about the music, with fantastic musicianship and a classic rocking vibe. I am hoping for big things for Something Unto Nothing! They don't know where they are going, but they know they won't rest until the goal is finally realized…to become…Something Unto Nothing…

Another track from the new Lynyrd Skynyrd album, 'Last of a Dyin’ Breed,' is up next. The latest album from Skynyrd is full of fantastic music including this emotional power ballad.

'Ready to Fly' lyrically is about a man dealing with the impending death of his mother, as she faced her plight with dignity, knowing that, in Heaven, she'll be reunited with her family and friends and, most importantly, her husband who was killed in Vietnam. It is a southern rock ballad at it's best. Check out the lyric video for the track and another for Skynyrd's 'Good Teacher' from the same album below.

3 Doors Down are back with a new video for their track 'One Light,' which is featured on the band's 'The Greatest Hits' album, which is available now. The new album features 9 #1 hits remixed and remastered, with three new songs, including 'One Light' Check out the new clip and a 'making of' video for the song below.

3 Doors Down will kick off a tour with Daughtry and Aranda on Jan. 25th in Grand Prarie, Texas that will continue until May 11th in Mexico City.

'Cocaine Cowboys', the new single from Swedish rockers CRASHDÏET, is up next in the rock picks. The song comes off the band's fourth album, 'The Savage Playground', which will be released on January 25 in Europe (excluding Scandinavia) and January 22 in North America by Frontiers Records.

'The Savage Playground' was recorded during summer/autumn 2012 at Kingside Studios outside Stockholm with producer Otto Wellton. The band hopes to break through on a worldwide basis with a tour that will see the band going back to the U.S. as well as going to Japan for the first time.

The new album sees CRASHDÏET going in a heavier and direction. "'The Savage Playground' is our playground, it's the beginning and the end, it's the place where we eat and breed," says guitarist Martin Sweet. "We thought the time was right for us to do a edgier and not-so-polished-sounding album, kinda like what we sound like live. It's more organic and rough-sounding. And, of course, we're always evolving as musicians and like to try new ways of expressing ourselves, and that can most definitely be heard this album."

"The Savage Playground" track listing:
1. Change The World
2. Cocaine Cowboys
3. Anarchy
4. California
5. Lickin' Dog
6. Circus
7. Sin City
8. Got A Reason
9. Drinkin' Without You
10. Snakes In Paradise
11. Damaged Kid
12. Excited
13. Garden Of Babylon

CRASHDÏET also released a new DVD entitled 'Shattered Glass And Broken Bones – Three Years Of Generation Wild' on December 4th. The disc features three hours of live and behind-the-scenes footage complied by the band with Bear Productions.

Snakecharmer have released a video for the song "Accident Prone", the first single from their upcoming self-titled debut album.

Originally founded in 2011 by former Whitesnake members Micky Moody and Neil Murray, the Snakecharmer super-group Laurie Wisefield (ex-Wishbone Ash, Tina Turner), Harry James (Thunder), Adam Wakeman (Ozzy Osbourne) and Chris Ousey (Heartland).

The band will release their first album on January 22nd in North America (vis Frontiers Records) and January 25th.

Musically the record has been described as a finely crafted hard rock album with blues and melodic overtones, akin to Whitesnake (1979-81 era), Bad Company and with hints of early Foreigner as well.

"We've really enjoyed writing and recording the new album," says Micky Moody. Neil Murray adds, "We can't wait to get out on tour in 2013 to promote it. The songs on our debut album reflect the kind of music that the members of the band want to play, which is melodic rock with a blues influence. Each of us has played many different styles of music, and our influences are varied, but Snakecharmer originally came together to play mainly early Whitesnake songs, so that is our starting point. There wasn't a deliberate plan to write songs in a particular style; each song on the album started as a basic idea by one or two band members, and if the other guys were enthusiastic about the idea, then the song would be worked up into a finished song."

3 Doors Down debut new song at Republican National Convention

3 Doors Down debuted a new song called "One Light" during the outro to the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night, but the crowd response to the song at the end of a long day was less-than-enthusiastic.

It came after New Jersey governor Chris Christie's keynote address, in front of a mostly older crowd. I get that it was a long day, but c'mon the crowd at least could have gotten a little bit more fired up.  There was reactions on Twitter, including this one from CNN's Lisa Desjardins: "I SEE NOT ONE Republican rocking, swaying or even halting to listen to the sounds of Three Doors Down. And I can see the whole place." Check out the video of the performance below.

On Wednesday, RNC delegates heared former "American Idol" contestants Ayla Brown and Danny Gokey. On Thursday another former "Idol" contestant and champ taylor Hicks along with gospel legend BeB Winans will perform. The house band duties for the week belong to former "Saturday Night Live" musical director and Hall and Oates backing band member G.E. Smith and his G.E. Smith Band. Kid Rock, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Camp Freddy, and Jack Blades are among the other rockers taking part in Republican National Convention week festivities.

Republican party to reportedly pay Journey $500K for concert at convention in Florida, other rockers converge on Tampa

Republican party to reportedly pay Journey $500K for concert at convention in Florida, other rockers converge on Tampa

Even though Dee Snider and Tom Morello won't be representing at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida this week, there will still be some rockin' going on. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jack Blades of Night Ranger/Damn Yankees and 3 Doors Down are all part of the festivities but only one band will head to Florida to make some big, big bucks to take part in a private Mitt Romney fundraising event.

TMZ reports that the veteran rockers will receive an incredible $500K payout for appearing at the event this Thursday night (Aug. 30) in Tampa. The group will reportedly play a 90-minute set for those in attendance. The group don’t feel they are making a political statement either way by performing at the event, and plan on treating the show like it’s just another gig. Neal Schon‘s girlfriend, Michaele Salahi, who first came to fame for gatecrashing a White House shindig with her ex-husband, will also be in attendance.

Jack Blades, bassist, lead singer and front man of Night Ranger and Damn Yankees is also participating in the 2012 Republican National Convention, performing “Back in the Game,” the lead track from his latest solo effort, Rock ‘n Roll Ride, and make appearances in support of Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and other GOP candidates today (Aug. 28).

"This country was built on the hard work of individual Americans who took a chance and pursued a dream," says Blades, who has sold more than 25 million albums throughout his remarkable career and performed in front of millions of fans worldwide. "Too often today I see that sort of initiative being discouraged and punished. We can do better. That's why I'm honored to have been asked to be involved in the convention."

Lynyrd Skynyrd is made their third appearance at a Republican Convention in their career with a performance at a private fundraiser on Sunday, followed by playing Monday as Ann Romney was introduced to convention attendees. The band members have some opinions on the state of the country with Gary Rossington telling BW&BK's “Everybody’s got a right to their own opinion, you know? I think the country is kind of on a back road now. I would like to see some changes about certain things, but you know, I don’t know what we can do. We’re a rock ‘n’ roll band. We’re more music and rock ‘n’ roll than politics.” Rossington says he considers himself more conservative than left wing, but he feels out of place talking about politics.

Instrumentalist Rickey Medlocke added, “I agree that America, first of all, is very deeply divided. One thing I don’t like is how everybody is making a racial thing out of this whole political arena that we are in. I’m Native American, so the racial thing kind of hits home with me. To be honest with you, man, I’m sick of politics here. I’ve been browbeaten by it until I’m sick of it. I’ve been slammed in my face about it, and honestly, I don’t perceive anything getting any better. I don’t know. I hope it does.”

Medlocke goes on to add, “I find that America is moving toward a certain type of government that everybody else is moving away from, and I find that very upsetting to me … I gotta tell you, Rickey Medlocke lived in some of the most magical years in this world’s history. I lived in the ’60s. I lived in the ’70s, right into the ’80s, and man it was bad to the bone.”

Medlocke says that politics is similar to rock in that everything has already been written and there’s nothing original anymore. He adds, “Politics are the same old thing. We elect people, we put them in office and guess what they do? They sell us out. They sell us down the river and we pay for it. So we try to tread lightly on the politics, although we can be very outspoken about it.”

3 Doors Down are in Tampa performing tonight at the convention. Here's a picture of voaclist Brad Arnold from the floor earlier today.
