Rock Picks of the Week: Taylor/Grohl/Nielsen/Reeder, Tremonti, Krokus, Black Veil Brides, Pinnick/Gales/Pridgen, Art Of Dying, Otherwise
First up this week in Rock picks is the next release from Dave Grohl's upcoming 'Sound City: Real To Reel' soundtrack. Corey Taylor (Slipknot/Stone Sour), Dave Grohl, Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick) and Scott Reeder (Kyuss) collaborate on 'From Can To Can't.' Heavy, yet radio friendly, the track is sure to help the reach of the 'Sound City' movie and soundtrack.
Taylor, Nielsen and Reeder performed the track with Grohl as part the Sound City Players on January 18th in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival. Others who were a part of the concert surrounding the movie premiere event included Alain Johannes of Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters Taylor Hawkins, Rami Jaffe, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Chris Goss of Masters Of Reality, drummer Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine, John Fogerty, Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, Lee Ving of Fear and violinist Jessy Greene. Another sold-out performance by the Sound City Players will happen Jan. 31st at the Hollywood Palladium, with Rick Nielsen a part of it, but Taylor won't be able to make that show. Screenings across the country of the movie will also happen on Jan. 31st.
Grohl was inspired to make the documentary last year after buying Sound City's custom-built Neve 8028 recording console, considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment.
The movie will be available for download purchase on Feb. 1st.
The new Tremonti track 'Wish You Well' from one of the best metal albums released in 2012 ('All I Was') is up next and the video is some visual art in itself. It includes a guitar playing young boy on a rooftop, having been led there by a mystery man. The man travels from house to house trying to find the young boy later in the clip and at the end of the video he arrives at the boy's door knocking, at an apartment number 12. Let's hope we see another video clip and single from the album so we can find out what's in apartment 12.
Tremonti will be touring Denmark, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the U.K., before starting a U.S. tour on Feb. 21 in Potiac, Michigan.
Krokus is back with a new album 'Dirty Dynamite,' slated for release on February 22nd, and the title track is in this week's Rock Picks.
For almost 40 years now Krokus has stood for high-quality, honest-to-goodness, hand-made power rock. No other Swiss rock band sells albums and its back catalogue worldwide like Krokus. The band has already sold over 14 million records, toured the world and received gold and platinum record awards. The milestones in their rock career are dotted around the world: from Australia and the USA to Canada, Mexico, Russia, Japan and China.
But it hasn't all been one long "high": death, sickness and internal strife have pushed the band to the brink of collapse. The story of Krokus is like no other. Dotted with highs and lows, sell-out stadium concerts and sweaty club gigs, these five musketeers of rock have outlasted trends and survived treacherous US managers, tough splits, bad deals, shady lawyers, drugs, awful fast food, endless bus trips, disco, grunge, grotesque record companies and double-dealing advisors.
Today they are back in their classic line-up -- Marc Storace, Chris von Rohr, Fernando von Arb, Mark Kohler, and Mandy Meyer -- and are stronger than ever on their new album 'Dirty Dynamite'. Guest musician Kosta Zafiriou plays drums on the entire album. The band spent a whole two years working on the new album under the watchful eye of bassist and original founder Chris Von Rohr. "We didn't spend all that time on golf courses or tennis courts. No, we just wanted to make the best album yet, the magnum opus of the new Krokus era" says the hit producer. Guitarist Mark Kohler has this to add, "This is not just another Krokus album. I think we have definitely passed another rock milestone with this record."
To reach this goal, no expense was spared. The band booked into the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. Krokus went back to their roots, back to where it all began with the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Free, the Who and the Bluesbreakers. Back to where the band headlined concerts in the Hammersmith Odeon, celebrating their first international success. "The atmosphere there is very special and we wanted to make the most of that," says vocalist Marc Storace. Guitarist Fernando Von Arb is quick to add, "With Dirty Dynamite we have recorded the urgently needed dirty kind of rock that no one plays in this country."
'Dirty Dynamite' track listing:
1. Hallelujah Rock'n'Roll
2. Go Baby Go
3. Rattlesnake Rumble
4. Dirty Dynamite
5. Let The Good Times Roll
7. Better Than Sex
8. Dog Song

10. Bailout Blues
11. Live Ma Life
12. Hardrocking Man
Black Veil Brides are back with their new album, 'Wretched And Divine: The Story Of The Wild Ones,' which recently debuted at No. 5 on The Billboard 200 charts. The band continues to have one of the most dedicated fan bases in rock and they are delivering to that base once again. 'In The End' is the first track and video from the album, which was produced by John Feldmann (Papa Roach, The Used, Atreyu).
Black Veil Brides are now headliners all over the world, with band currently on the first leg of 'The Church Of The Wild Ones' world tour. The U.S. dates wrap up in San Francisco on March 8th.
The new power trio Pinnick Gales Pridgen is up next with their new track 'Hang On, Big Brother. The song comes off the band's self-titled debut album, which will be released on February 12th.
It's often been said that three-piece bands are the most expressive and most balanced musical units known to the rock world. CREAM, THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE, RUSH, THE POLICE, PRIMUS... These legendary acts struck upon the correct ratio of musicianship and progressive songwriting by exploring uncharted musical territories while highlighting the individual talents within their collective ranks.
Now Magna Carta Records unveils PINNICK GALES PRIDGEN, a visionary power trio (emphasis on power) and a supergroup to boot, which is sure to take its rightful place in rock's hallowed halls.
Composed of bassist/vocalist Doug "dUg" Pinnick of the progressive metal band KING'S X, southpaw blues-rock guitarist Eric Gales (LAURYN HILL) and ambitious ambidextrous drummer and former THE MARS VOLTA member Thomas Pridgen, PINNICK GALES PRIDGEN unites three versatile artists, who demand, as much as share, the musical spotlight.
On the band's debut, each member of PINNICK GALES PRIDGEN infuses the material with his own set of musical influences, transforming his individual instrument into a lead instrument. The absolutely slamming musicianship frames the recognizable melodies of these songs and catapults the music into the realms of psychedelic blues, hard rock, and progressive soul/R&B.
"This record is three guys, with music in us, who said, 'Let's go for it,'" says Pinnick. "It was built upon raw energy."
Produced by Mike Varney, PINNICK GALES PRIDGEN's debut contains all the stinging bite and all-out sonic boom of KING'S X, THE MARS VOLTA and the ERIC GALES BAND. In addition, fans of artists as far ranging as Jimi Hendrix, CREAM, LIVING COLOUR, Stevie Ray Vaughan, TOOL, THE WHO, Stevie Wonder and LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT might find something meaningful in these meaty, extended tracks.
PINNICK GALES PRIDGEN show some of their influences with their brilliant version of seminal power trio CREAM's "Sunshine Of Your Love". Pinnick says, "Our version has a different vibe: it's tuned down, real low."
"I think the record has a combination of all of the good things about our playing," says Pridgen.
"This is just colossal," Gales concludes. "This is just some slammin' [stuff]. When you put a project out like this, man, people will want to hear that [material] live. I know I would."
"Pinnick Gales Pridgen" track listing:
1. Collateral Damage
2. Angels And Aliens
3. For Jasmine
4. Hang On, Big Brother
5. Wishing Well
6. Hate Crime
8. Black Jeans
9. Sunshine Of Your Love
10. Been So High (The Only Place To Go Is Down)
11. Me And You
12. The Greatest Love
PINNICK GALES PRIDGEN is:
- Doug "dUg" Pinnick (KING'S X) - Bass and Vocals
- Eric Gales (ERIC GALES BAND, LAURYN HILL) - Guitar and Vocals
- Thomas Pridgen (THE MARS VOLTA) – Drums

Art of Dying have released another track from their successful 'Vices and Virtues' album. 'Raining' follows 'Die Trying,' 'Get Thru This' and 'Sorry' from the band. 'Raining' features former Three Days Grace vocalist Adam Gontier, and the band has dedicated the release to Gontier and his former group.
Art of Dying recently released discussed the reasons behind the dedication to Gontier and all of Three Days Grace:
"In light of Adam’s departure from the band last week, we are dedicating this lyric video to Adam, Brad, Neil, Barry and all of the Three Days Grace fans around the world. They have moved us with their music and we wish all of them the best on their new musical path’s and life journeys. The story behind the recording: As many of you know Cale and Adam are cousins, and grew up together in Ontario. Adam was kind enough to sing the second verse and do some harmonies with us in the studio. It’s been such an honour having Adam on our record and learning from his unique style and benevolent nature.
In a solo posting at the band’s Facebook page, Art of Dying frontman Jonny Hetherington added, “You created powerful music that inspired us in so many ways. Wishing you the best on all of your musical paths and life’s journeys.”
After the success of the track 'Soldiers,' Las Vegas rockers Otherwise, featuring singer Adrian and his brother guitarist Ryan Patrick, along with guitarist Vassilios Metropoulous, bassist Flavio Ivan and drummer Corky Gainsford have another solid track getting airplay from their latest album 'True Love Never Dies.' 'I Don’t Apologize (1000 Pictures)' continues it's accent up the charts, and looks to surpass the chart position of 'Soldiers.' A new video for 'I Don’t Apologize (1000 Pictures)' has been released and it initially features a man in the desert near a lone leafless tree. He starts thumbing through photos of he and his ex, looking back on the good times he had. He then attaches the pictures to the tree with a clothespin on the branches. Those good times don't last, his girl was cheating and the video and track show him moving on from his past.
Otherwise toured through much of 2012, and continue on the road in 2013, as they are the opening act for Stone Sour and Papa Roach on their current North American tour.
