In response to a Detroit Lions fan starting an online petition trying to get Nickelback off the United Way Thanksgiving Halftime Show during the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers game on Thanksgiving Day, the band teamed up with Funny or Die for this clip featuring comedian Paul Scheer as a cliched record label exec sporting his best Nickelback hair and sweater vest. He and his sidekick discuss what to do to win over the crowd in Detroit.
Ideas include transforming the band from Nickelback to The Four Nickels and making them a Motown act. Another idea is having the band dress up as Detroit’s greats, including Tom Selleck, Alice Cooper, RoboCop and the legendary Dave Coulier.
Even if you think Nickelback sucks and is corporate rock at it's best, you have to hand it to the band for making fun of themselves. You'll probably be watching tomorrow if you're a football fan anyway, as this petition didn't get the job done:
The petition reads as follows:
“This game is nationally televised, do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?! Does anyone even like Nickelback? Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions? This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game. At least the people watching at home can mute their TVs. The Lions ought to think about their fans before choosing such an awful band to play at halftime.
I give it to anyone who can make money, let alone tons of money, making music. Chad Kroeger has figured it out, and the new track "Bottoms Up" sits at #2 on the rock charts this week. Happy Thanksgiving!
