Rock Picks of the Week: Soundgarden, Europe, Joe Walsh, Candlebox, The Treatment

Soundgarden start us off on this edition of Rock Picks of the Week with their fantastic new track 'Live to Rise' from the rocking 'Avengers Assemble' soundtrack. The soundtrack will be released just three days before the film on May 1. Soundgarden's latest will be featured in the end credits of what will be one of the biggest movies of the summer.

Soundgarden stated in an official press release recently, when just releasing a snippet of the song: "We've been hard at work on our new album, which will come out this Fall. When the opportunity arose to write an original song for the film came our way, we thought it could be a cool match. We are excited to release our new song, which is also the only new song in the film. Here's a taste. Loudest of Love."

Adam Kaspar, who co-produced Sondgarden's last record, 1996's "Down On The Upside", has been working with the group on the new album as well. Soundgarden will be making the European Festival trek this summer starting with a May 25 appearance at the Sonisphere Festival in Madrid, Spain. Soundgarden will also headline the 2012 Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park, London on July 13, 2012, with special guests Iggy & The Stooges and Cold Chisel. Here's the full slate of gigs for the summer:

May 25 - Sonisphere Festival - Madrid, Spain
May 27 - Pinkpop Festival - Heerlen, Netherlands
May 28 - Wertchter Boutique Festival - Wertchter, Belgium
May 29 - Le Zenith de Paris - Paris, France
May 31 - Zitadelle - Berlin, Germany
Jun. 1 - Rock AM Ring - Nurburg, Germany
Jun. 3 - Rock Im Park - Nuremberg, Germany
Jun. 4 - Arena Concerti Fiera Milano - Milan, Italy

The next Rock Pick "Not Supposed To Sing The Blues' comes from the new Europe album 'Bag Of Bones.' It's a great straight ahead rocker from the ninth studio album from the Swedish hard rockers, with references to great rock tracks from the past. It has passion, great musicianship and production, and just plain kick ass! The new album will be released on April 27 by earMusic/Edel. The CD features a guest appearance by guitar great Joe Bonamassa (Black Country Communion) and was produced by Kevin Shirley, who has previously worked with Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa, Black Country Communion, Black Stone Cherry and Journey, among others. If you think 'The Final Countdown' when you think Europe, get ready for something much different, and most definetly more rocking. Europe will be touring the globe in 2012-13 and vocalist Joey Tempest has said the band may not be performing that one in concert on the tour, although I find that hard to believe.

Commented Europe singer Joey Tempest: "Kevin Shirley did such a great job capturing the spirit of this band. He just let us do our thing and then pushed us and our songs to the max. Finally we express ourselves completely without restraint. Straight from heart and soul. It took some time but we have arrived!"

Added Europe guitar virtuoso John Norum: "Why drive VW beetle when you can drive a Rolls Royce?! 'Bag Of Bones' is a classic rock album with lots of class. Even my mom likes it!"

Regarding the new CD title, Europe drummer Ian Haugland said, "It's not (called 'Bag Of Bones') because we all have lost tons of weight or found a new interest in archeology or dogs... It's just because it sounds fuckin' cool!"

In a July 2011 press release, Tempest stated about Europe's new CD, "We still feel we have one hell of a rock record to make. Kevin's the man for the job. We love his work with Bonamassa, Black Country Communion, and Black Stone Cherry. He's the real deal. We're ready to do some serious damage."

Last year, Europe met up with Shirley in Stockholm to discuss the direction of the next album. Based on reactions from the fans and media, Europe's 2009 album, "Last Look At Eden", proved to be the band's most important record since "The Final Countdown". "I've been a big fan of Europe's work for many years," said Shirley. "The band is influential and highly underrated. I can't wait to make the upcoming album their most explosive to date."

The new material suggests a more straightforward rock approach evident in "Doghouse" — a new song Europe performed on their most recent U.K. tour. The song is also featured on Europe's "Europe: Live at Shepherd's Bush" DVD, released in August 2011 via earMUSIC CDs and DVDs.

Joe Walsh is getting ready to release his 10th solo album, ‘Analog Man’ on June 5. It’s his first solo offering in 20 years, and features the title track as the first single, which you can hear below. It's great to have some solo Joe after so long! Joe will be busy playing concerts with the Eagles both overseas and in the U.S. during the next month, but afterward the guitarist will be playing solo gigs in support of his new album. Walsh has scheduled a total of 11 solo shows with three taking place in late May, and the rest spread throughout the summer.

The solo itinerary kicks off May 17 in Catoosa, Oklahoma, and is slated to August 30 gig in Tulalip, Washington.

90's Rock gods Candlebox are back, and we're glad about it. Their new album 'Love Stories & Other Musings,' their first studio offering in four years, was released on April 3rd, and the band is currently on tour in support of the new album. 'Believe In It' is the first single, and shows growth, while bringing positivity and still retaining that Candlebox sound.

"Years ago I read something that changed the way I look at EVERYTHING! It struck so deeply that I have never forgotten it. It simply stated: Without music, life would be a mistake. I've never forgotten it, even when I was struggling to find a song or a melody it kept me searching and frankly I could not imagine my life without it," said lead vocalist and co-founder, Kevin Martin. "This record for me is no mistake, it is our music and our love for what a great gift we have been given. Love Stories & Other Musings is a new direction for us and I couldn't be happier to share it with our fans."

"I haven't felt this way about a release from Candlebox since our first record. The feeling for this record is both refreshing and stimulating," said guitarist Peter Klett. 'I can't be more excited to release this music to the fans who have been with us for so long."

The young U.K. rockers The Treatment round out the Rock Picks this week. All the guys in the band are around 18 years old, and although they made be young, they play and sound like bands that have been doing it for years.

The Treatment just completed a UK tour with Steel Panther, have already toured with other major rockers including Alice Cooper in the past, will support Thin Lizzy for a few shows during May in the UK, and play the Download Festival in Donington on June 9th. The big time news for the band is that they grabbed the coveted support slot on the upcoming KISS and Motley Crue North American co-headlining tour, simply dubbed 'The Tour.' That huge tour kicks off on July 20th in Bristow, Virginia and run through September 23rd in Hartford, Connecticut. Nikki Sixx played their song 'The Doctor' on his Sixx Sense radio show, liked it, and it all came together from there. This will raise the exposure level in the States for the band and I can't wait for them to blow the fuck up here!

The Treatment are:
Matt Jones-Vocals
Ben Brookland-Guitar
Tag Grey-Guitar
Dhani Mansworth-Drums
Swoggle-Bass

The Treatment was recently in the studio laying down tracks for a brand new 70's covers EP; and as with the band's debut album, "This Might Hurt", released by Spinefarm Records last year, production has been overseen by Laurie Mansworth at Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris' Barnyard Studios, with Tony Newton mixing.

The track listing for the EP:

1. Run Run Run (Jo Jo Gunne)
2. Take Me Bake 'Ome (Slade)
3. Evil Woman (Electric Light Orchestra)
4. Motorbikin' (Chris Spedding)
5. Let's Work Together (Canned Heat)

The Treatment's Dhani will be playing at the Stick It to MS charity event on the 15th of July. 800 drummers are wanted to break a Guinness World Record in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

SITMS 2012 promises to be the largest gathering of drummers on drum kits the world has ever seen. If you are a drummer WE NEED YOU!! In 2009 582 drummers came to the NIA in Birmingham and broke a world record. In the process we managed to raise a staggering £66,315 for the MS Society.

In 2012 we are aiming to smash this record and raise more money whilst getting loud about Multiple Sclerosis. If anybody is interested in taking part and drumming check out the website: www.stickittoms.com

KISS and Motley Crue name UK’s The Treatment as opening band on ‘The Tour’

KISS and Motley Crue kick off 'The Tour' on July 20th in Bristow, Virginia and they have chose an opener for the shows. UK rockers The Treatment have just been chosen to support all the shows. Nikki Sixx said about the band: "I am very happy for them. We played them nine months ago on Sixx Sense and fans really loved what they are about. Give them a warm welcome."

These guys kick ass! They have a great, straight ahead, no bullshit rock vibe! I'm excited for them to get this kind of exposure in the U.S. and look forward to hearing and seeing a lot more from them!

Here's a band description on their facebook page:

At a time when so much rock music is defined according to a specific genre or sub-genre, it’s refreshing for a new band to come along who are both happy and proud to be called simply ‘rock’… and when that band are just 18 years old, then the project becomes very exciting indeed: classic sounds filtered through young hearts an’ minds.

A five-strong outfit based in the Cambridge area of the UK, The Treatment are indeed tender in years, but you’d never guess that from the quality of their song-writing or the confident swagger of their live show. It’s only really the exuberance and in-built energy of their playing that gives the game away, adding a fresh-faced twist to some deeply classic grooves.

Combining the drive of early Def Leppard with the song-writing ability of prime UFO and Thin Lizzy, the whole thing underpinned by the sort of low-slung riffing redolent of early Aerosmith or G n’ R, The Treatment are unashamedly inspired by an era when rock bands looked like rock bands and were generally intent on causing a stir (both onstage and off); an era when the lifestyle was important, when music was everything and when vinyl was king.

Here's the official band bio:
“The Treatment were formed in 2008, when founder member drummer Dhani Mansworth was still at school in Cambridge . Although only 15 at the time he already had a clear vision of the kind of band he wanted to form. Having grown up on a diet of ACDC, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith he began to put the band together under the watchful eye of his father guitarist and manager Laurie Mansworth (More, Airrace, Roadstar).

Having had little success with local musicians he decided to go further afield. First to join the line up was 18 year old Ben Brookland from Tadley, he shared the same passion for classic bands as Dhani. Ben's unique guitar style suited the bill perfectly. Soon after came bass player Rick Newman (aka Swoggle) also 15. Rick's enthusiasm and solid bass sound fitted perfectly. Rick suggested that the band audition Tagore Grey his school friend and guitarist from Petersfield. Rick's recommendation was spot on as Tag's guitar style was exactly what they had been looking for. The boys passion for the band was proved when they all packed bags and moved to Cambridge were they shared a home with The Mansworths so they could focus completely on the band and rehearse on a daily basis.

After a 6 month search they found the final piece of the jigsaw. Matt Jones a 17 year old wonder kid hailing from Norwich. His high energy rock vocals was exactly what the guys were looking for. Matt moved to Cambridge within 1 week of joining the band and after locking themselves away to refine their sound, they emerged one year later, they were ready to showcase.

This needs to get some airplay in the U.S.!

The Treatment recently were touring with Steel Panther on their 'Balls Out over Europe' tour. Check out these video of the band's voyage across Europe. These guys seem really cool, humble and ready to rock! Nice rendition of Sweet Child O' Mine'! and the Hamburg footage kicks ass! I can only image the fun these guys are going to have on tour with KISS and Motley Crue! Look out!
