The early '80s metal scene in Los Angeles has become legendary, as it spawned such worldwide headliners as Mötley Crüe, Ratt, Dokken, W.A.S.P., and originally, Metallica (before the latter relocated to San Francisco). And the new documentary, 'Inside Metal: Pioneers of L.A. Hard Rock & Metal,' chronicles the entire scene.

Directed by Bob Nalbandian and produced by Metalrock Films, 'Inside Metal' features all-new interviews with countless bands and artists that thrived on the scene, and tell its story, first hand. Early feedback has been exceptional, including renowned video director Jonas Åkerlund (who has worked with the likes of Metallica and Ozzy) raving, "This film captures an era that catapulted metal into the spotlight and takes the audience on a wild ride down memory lane. After watching it I wanted to get in my time machine and experience those days for the first time. You’re hit with a potent nostalgia, a time I thought we couldn’t get back, not until I saw this film. I can’t get enough of this shit, what an amazing film to watch over and over again, well done!"

Metalrock Films ask - and want - real and serious metal fans to be a part of this historic documentary and spread the word that this was the scene where it all began, ground zero.

"Our Fanbacked campaign will raise the direly needed financial support to bring this film to one and all in the US and Internationally in order to pay for the marketing and promotion to get it noticed by the general public. We want to bring this film to your theatre, town, bar, club and living room! Unite and support us. We have created some one of a kind opportunities for our friends and fans to participate with us in birth of this film. Get your name on the screen and let the world know that you support metal and the bands that create it. Help us tell the story of the music you love and let the world know you love it. Join in the festivities of our, and your, accomplishments by being at the premiere of the movie and interact with the artist that participated in its creation. Commemorate your participation with a plaque, t-shirt, poster or other limited edition merchandise items that says 'Metal Rules.' Keep checking back as we add more tasty premiums."

New all-star KISS tribute band ALIVE announces concert dates, backing upcoming KISS tribute charity album

New all-star KISS tribute band ALIVE announces concert dates, backing upcoming KISS tribute charity album

To mark the 40th Anniversary of KISS, some of the greatest rock musicians for a KISS tribute album. “A World With Heroes” features unique performances of incredible KISS songs. Rock journalist Mitch Lafon is behind the 'A World With Heroes' project, having set it up via a pledgemusic project campaign.  The campaign has gone on to be one of the most successful in the pledgemusic history. Lafon said: “It’s come about because my father-in-law passed away at the hospice in January. I wanted to raise awareness and give back – rock stars certainly help raise awareness.” Now, Guns n’Roses guitarist Bumblefoot, former Whitesnake drummer Brian Tichy and ex-Pantera bassist Rex Brown have formed Kiss tribute act ALIVE after they discovered their shared passion for the band from the upcoming charity record. The guys have also announced three upcoming shows, two in Southern California and one in Las Vegas.

Brown says: “We got asked to play on the album to benefit cancer research. It was a great cause and we wanted to be part of it – but I think it also came from a place of real passion too.

“I remember I was in seventh grade and this chick had a copy of Alive! I swiped it, and it changed the future of rock’n'roll as I know it. They are one of the reasons I jam to this day. It’s the attitude and the songs, not the schtick, that I go back to every time.

“After we’d heard what we’d recorded, we thought it would be a lot of fun to do it live. As it turned out, Mark and I had just finished recording the upcoming Kill Devil Hill album, and had a small window of time this summer before we head out on the road again. The timing perfectly coincided with breaks in Ron and Brian’s schedules as well, so we decided to put this thing together.”

Bumblefoot says: “Hearing the Kiss Alive! album at the age of five is what made me want to play guitar and join a band. I’m looking forward to playing the songs that launched my life.”

Tichy adds: “Kiss was the first band I got into. Peter Criss was my first drum idol. When the idea of going for this together was brought up we all reacted with unbridled excitement.” For more info, check out the guys facebook page

Tooth and Nail forced to change their band name, Don Dokken reveals new artwork for upcoming Dokken release

by on Mar.24, 2012, under CD/DVD RELEASES, ROCK NEWS

Tooth and Nail forced to change their band name, Don Dokken reveals new artwork for upcoming Dokken release

Original and current Dokken members have both been busy, with new releases expected from Don Dokken's original band and Tooth And Nail, the new band featuring George Lynch (guitar), Jeff Pilson (bass), and Mick Brown (drums). Bad news for Tooth And Nail however, as they have been forced to shorten their name to 'T&N' for legal reasons. The band said in a statement, "We cannot keep [the name] as TOOTH AND NAIL as there is a label that has it trademarked. [Fans] can still call us TO$%H AND NA$L... We can't."

T&N's debut album is expected later in the year. The CD will feature new original material and reworked versions of Dokken classics. Pilson has contributed vocals to a new track title "When Eagles Die", with an all-star lineup of lead vocalists on other tracks. Sebastian Bach will handle Dokken's 'Alone Again,' with Dug Pinnick (King's X) and Tim "Ripper" Owens (Judas Priest, Yngwie Malmsteen, Iced Earth, Dio Disciples) on Dokken's 'Kiss Of Death.' Mick Brown handles vocal chores on Dokken's 'When Heaven Comes Down.' The drum tracks on the new, original compositions were laid down by the great Brian Tichy (Whitesnake, Foreignen, S.U.N.).

Don Dokken has unveiled the cover artwork the forthcoming album, 'Broken Bones.' Drums for the album were recently recorded at Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee's The Atrium studio in Calabasas, California. Look for a summer release, possibly in June via Frontiers Records.

Don Dokken said in a recent interview that the new album title, "[It]is a metaphor that we all have broken bones, be it from an accident, failed relationship, or a broken heart. Everybody gets wounded as we go through life, but, as they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

Dokken previously described the band's new material as "very uptempo and heavy." He added, "We know our fans like the classic Dokken sound, and this is where our new music is headed. It's been a band of brothers doing what we love: 'music.'"

Regarding the new songs' lyrical approach, Dokken said, "I write what comes from the heart, I don't believe in writing music trying to repeat what you've already done. I understand what the fans want but as an artist I see no point in painting the same picture over and over."

So we'll have some new Dokken, some new old Dokken, and some new music from former Dokken members all in a few months. It will be interesting to see what release will be better, and what mud may be slung in the promotion process. What I'm wondering is, with the well-publicized animosity between George Lynch and Don Dokken, how is it going to work with Mick Brown being a part of both projects?
