Van Halen shut down Hollywood with performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, David Lee Roth injured (video)

David Lee Roth first ever U.S. television performance with Van Halen happened on Jimmy Kimmel Live! as the band shut down Hollywood Boulevard for a concert before a crowd of about 6,000. The first part of that aired last night, and will continue with taped performances tonight. Dave has grown some hair since his cleanly shaven dome performance for Dave Grohl's birthday bash a couple of months ago, and came away from this show with a nice gash on his nose during their first attempt on "Panama." Watch the mishap and performances below.

Diamond Dave cut himself in the face with a microphone soon after hitting the stage, then pausing the show until he was bandaged up. “I f—ed my nose up with the microphone here,” Roth said. “So we’re gonna start the whole thing over, and give you a little extra for your patience.”

REMASTERS:

Van Halen reinvented the sound of hard rock in 1978 with its influential and wildly successful eponymous debut album and then achieved even greater success six years later with 1984. Both albums would define a generation while selling more than 10 million copies each in the U.S. alone to earn diamond-certification from the RIAA. The band recently went back to the original analog tapes and remastered both of these landmark albums – Van Halen and 1984 – which are now also set for release on March 31, 2015 through Warner Bros. Records with pre-orders through Amazon available now.

Considered one of the greatest debut albums in rock history, Van Halen took the music world by storm in 1978 with an 11-song manifesto that features some of rock radio’s most played songs of all time and scorching concert staples like “Runnin’ With The Devil,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,” “Jamie’s Cryin’,” the band’s signature cover of The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” and Eddie Van Halen’s finger-tapping tour de force, “Eruption.” Six years and five albums later, Van Halen had become one of the biggest bands in world around the release of 1984, which includes a number of the band’s most legendary songs such as the #1 hit, “Jump,” “Panama,” and “Hot For Teacher.”

Mastering engineer Chris Bellman, who remastered the original albums for Bernie Grundman Studios, Hollywood, CA, was enlisted for these new versions. In order to produce the original sound the band intended, Bellman cut straight from the quarter-inch tapes for CD; for 180-gram vinyl; and for the digital version. Newly mastered versions of Diver Down, Women and Children First, Van Halen II and Fair Warning are also being cut for each format and will be available soon.

The front and back covers of 'Tokyo Dome Live In Concert' feature famous paintings by Adolf Mouron Cassandre. Roth is a big fan of the art deco era, and chose Cassandre's painting of the SS Normandie for the front cover, with the back cover is similar to Cassandre's painting of the French cruise-liner L'Atlantique.

Jason Becker says ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is “amazing”

Jason Becker says ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is “amazing”

Jason Becker, the former guitarist for David Lee Roth who has lived with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) for 25 years, is ecstatic to see what the ALS Ice-bucket Challenge is doing to help fight against the disease. Becker has been robbed of his ability to speak or move and communicates with a system designed by his father, Gary, where Becker uses his eyes to “spell out” what he wants to say by looking at letters on a letter board. Becker's talent had him being compared to guitar like Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen at the time of his diagnosis. Initially he was only given a few more years to live, but he has defied the odds and surviving decades longer than first predicted, he still currently composes music.

“I love it. It is amazing,” Becker told Christa Titus of Billboard.com. “At first I didn’t get it, but man, the awareness and money it has raised is incredible. I hope something great comes out of it for ALS patients.”

Jason Becker took his own version of the Ice-bucket Challenge, but with ice bags placed on this head and body, since pouring ice water on his medical equipment wasn't an option. Becker says David Lee Roth has donated to the ALS cause. Regarding Van Halen, he hasn’t heard from him, but “it doesn’t matter. Eddie has done so much for me. It is incredible how much he has helped me and my whole family.” Becker says Van Halen “saved” him and his family when they were having a major financial crisis, and he also got Warner Bros. to release Becker’s 2001 album Perspective. “So,” says Becker, “[Eddie] doesn’t have to get wet.”

Becker now composes music with the assistance of a computer program and collaborators. Three new tracks he wrote are included on his 2008 album 'Collection.' Becker's good friend and former bandmate in the act Cacophony, Marty Friedman (Megadeth), guested on Collection. Becker returned the favor by contributing to the song “Horrors” on Friedman’s latest solo album, Inferno. They wrote the song by swapping ideas via email. To give or find out more about ALS, visit www.alsa.org.

On August 30th, Richie Kotzen will headline a benefit concert for Jason Becker in San Francisco, CA at The Great American Music Hall. Kotzen told Billboard, “I’m leaving two days [after the event] to start a European tour, and I was actually worried that I wasn’t going to be able to participate. But I made sure that I was able to move things around so I could be a part of it. It’s something important for me that I want to do.” This will be the fourth benefit Kotzen has played on behalf of Becker.
