Aerosmith News: Steven Tyler of Aerosmith getting musical advice from Johnny Depp?, “Dream On’ cover part of ’100 Years of Fenway Park’ album
Johnny Depp recently jammed with Steven Tyler, Joe Perry and Alice Cooper at the after party celebrating Depp's latest movie 'Dark Shadows,' but Depp has a history with Aerosmith as does 'Dark Shadows' director Tim Burton. Aerosmith have been holed up in Burton's old Swinghouse recording studio working on the new album and Depp has been dropping by occasionally to check in on the band’s progress.
Tyler explained, "When we are done recording, I go up to Johnny’s house and I play him stuff and I ask if it is any good. He gives me [honest feedback]." Tyler says Depp is qualified to weigh in on the subject. "Johnny is a great musician and many people don’t know that, he plays piano, guitar, he knows his music."
Tyler saiys that ‘Legendary Child,’ Aerosmith’s contribution to the upcoming ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ movie is awesome and the spirit of the film lines up quite well with the band’s own experiences. "'G.I. Joe' [is] about deep space and 'let’s go fight the foe.' And then I thought about where the band came from, and going [into] the music business. If there ever...was a foe, the music business was. So to be successful you had to learn how to climb ladders, jump through hoops and live through burning houses."
Tyler also says the band recently spent 12 hours filming a video for the song and he gives high praise to his longtime mate Perry, who he says was “on fire” when the band was recording the song.
Aerosmith will premiere a new song on the season finale of 'American Idol' on May 23rd. It is not confirmed, but it most likely will be 'Legendary Child', which was an outake from the 'Get A Grip' sessions.
In celebration of the 100th birthday of Fenway Park, members of the Boston Red Sox are featured with Boston area musicians on the commemorative album, ’100 Year Anniversary of Fenway Park.' The album features contemporary recordings of fan favorites that are often heard bellowing at Fenway during games and that are associated with the area’s bands. Current and former Sox players contribute along with special guests and children from the team’s charitable Red Sox Scholars program.
'Sweet Caroline' features home run machine David “Big Papi’ Ortiz providing background vocals and improv while Clay Buchholz plays acoustic guitar. Jon Butcher is joined by Jarrod Saltalamacchia churns out additional guitar licks on a cover of Aerosmith's 'Dream On.' Daniel Bard plays acoustic guitar on album’s debut single, 'Let the Good Times Roll.' He is joined by Extreme lead singer Gary Cherone and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt.
Kenny Aronoff, who's currently drumming for Chickenfoot and has worked with John Mellencamp and John Fogerty besides having done session work for a never ending list of musicians, contributed drums.
A portion of the proceeds benefit the Red Sox Foundation, the official team charity of the Boston Red Sox, and its Red Sox Scholars and inner city youth baseball programs. The album will be available exclusively for purchase at the Yawkey Way Store/The Official Red Sox Team Store, as well as at all traditional and digital retailers on May 22nd.

Van Halen News: ‘A Different Kind Of Truth’ debuts at #2, DLR video collection, VH ‘totally o.k.’ with fans shooting video and pics on upcoming tour, Gary Cherone VH memories, more Los Angeles Forum video, Howard Stern Uncensored History of VH
Looks like Van Halen picked the wrong week to release the new 'A Different Kind of Truth' album, as Adele's '21' beat out Van Halen for the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 chart.
Adele's '21' got a pre-grammy boost and sold 237,000 in the week that ended on February 12th, posting a gain of 95%. Van Halen's A Different Kind of Truth arrives in the No. 2 position with 187,000 according to Billboard Magazine.
The new Van Halen album is the band's 14th consecutive top 10 album, going back to 1979's Van Halen II, which topped out at No. 6. The only release in the veteran act's catalog that missed the top 10 was its self-titled 1978 debut, which peaked at No. 19. The group's last studio record, 1998's Van Halen 3 (with Gary Cherone on lead vocals), debuted and peaked at No. 4 with 191,000 in its first week.
Van Halen News Desk is reporting that David Lee Roth says the band is “totally okay with” fans shooting photos or video at the shows during their 2012 tour, which kicks off this Saturday in Louisville, KY. But just cell phones or small cameras will be allowed, no professional cameras or video equipment.
Roth has recorded and released a potporri of various videos detailing various observations, memories and tracks on the new album. Check them all out below:
"Honey Baby Sweetie Doll Word Jazz"
"Song By Song: As Is"
"You And Your Blues"
"Word Jazz Lyric Test: As Is"
Rollingstone.com recently conducted a fantastic interview with former VH vocalist Gary Cherone. Some great insight from the 'forgotten' VH vocalist. Check it out here.
Miked665, who I follow on Youtube, always has kick-ass video from Southern California concerts. Check out his collection of video from the Van Halen Los Angeles Forum show on Feb. 8th. Some great stuff!
The Howard Stern Show recently reached into the vault and presented a tribute to the Van Halen's history. The special included the good, the bad and the ugly as it played out on the world's greatest radio stage. From Roth to Hagar to Roth to Cherone to Hagar back to Roth. Check it out in its entirety below:
Van Halen have officially announced that they will be touring in 2012! They band released three shorts videos using 'Jump,' 'Panama,' and 'Hot For Teacher,' as backround music. You can watch the three together in an long version below. The band looks to be having a great time together in some apparent rehearsal footage. The band have also released an image of a locomotive and the date 2-7-12, presumably the cover and release date for the new album. There is no confirmation on that as of yet however.
There have been many rumors and speculation over the past few months about Van Halen, but it seems that we will be hearing the first track from the album in a matter of weeks. Producer Ross Hogarth has said the new stuff is “the killing side of Van Halen at the top of their game again with Diamond Dave, and the band on fire."
Let's hope it really kicks ASS! There have been rumors that Eddie Van Halen wasn't convinced that DLR's vocals were completely up to snuff and he wanted some re-recorded, and Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt’s has said that Eddie told him he’s “a little nervous” about how the whole thing will turn out.
The new album will be their first on Interscope Records, and a photo of the band with Interscope exec's was released recently. Long time label Warner Brothers Records is no longer involved with the band.
