Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart release new autobiography this Tuesday, ‘Kicking & Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock & Roll’

Ann & Nancy Wilson are legendary figures in the world of rock, who undoubtedly have some more than interesting stories to share of their over four decades in the music business. This Tuesday (Sept. 18) their book 'Kicking & Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock & Roll' hits shelves (Harper Collins) and tells the stories behind their ascent in the world of rock, the inspiration and making of their classic tracks, and shares juicy details about some of the connections with other artists they've made over the years. Here's a full description and some of what you can expect to find in the book:

The mystery of "Magic Man." The wicked riff of "Barracuda." The sadness and beauty of "Alone." The raw energy of "Crazy On You." These songs, and so many more, are part of the fabric of American music. Heart, fronted by Ann and Nancy Wilson, has given fans everywhere classic, raw, and pure badass rock and roll for more than three decades. As the only sisters in rock who write their own music and play their own instruments, Ann and Nancy have always stood apart—certainly from their male counterparts but also from their female peers. By refusing to let themselves and their music be defined by their gender, and by never allowing their sexuality to overshadow their talent, the Wilson sisters have made their mark, and in the process paved the way for many of today's female artists.

In Kicking and Dreaming, Ann and Nancy, with the help of critically acclaimed and bestselling music biographer Charles R. Cross (Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain), recount a journey that has taken them from a gypsy-like life as the children of a globe-trotting Marine to the frozen back roads of Vancouver, where they got their start as a band, to the pinnacle of success—and sometimes excess. In these pages, readers will learn the truth about the relationship that inspired "Magic Man" and "Crazy On You," the turmoil of inter-band romances gone awry, the reality of life on the road as single women and then as mothers of small children, and the thrill of performing and in some cases partying with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Stevie Nicks, Van Halen, Def Leppard, and other rock legends. It has not always been an easy path. Ann struggled with and triumphed over a childhood stutter, body image, and alcoholism; Nancy suffered the pain and disappointment of fertility issues and a failed marriage but ultimately found love again and happiness as a mom. Through it all, the sisters drew from the strength of a family bond that trumps everything else, as told in this intimate, honest, and uniquely female take on the rock and roll life.

Throughout their career, Ann and Nancy have never found an answer to the question they are most frequently asked: What is it like to be a woman in rock and roll?" Kicking and Dreaming puts that question to bed, once and for all.

Rollingstone.com  has posted some of the stories found in the book, and by all indications, it looks like it will be an amazing read:

During Ann's junior year in high school, their parents became aware that their daughters were regularly smoking pot. Having hit a bit of a counterculture experimental phase, one night after dinner, the Wilson parents suggested that the whole family toke together. Ann recalls it being rather embarrassing: "It wasn't the best pot, but I wasn't about to share my connection with my parents."

"Crazy On You" was inspired by Ann's first serious romance, with Michael Fischer, who would soon become Heart's iron-fisted manager. The pair shacked up on a hippie commune in Canada. Wilson writes that while the lyrics "were straight out of the scenes of wild sexuality that went on in the cottage," they were also about her feminist awakening and finding empowerment through her music.

During Heart's earliest incarnation they were primarily a cover band, cementing their reputation in the Vancouver club scene with their set of Led Zeppelin songs. In March 1975, Heart was onstage performing "Stairway to Heaven" when Zeppelin themselves walked in, fresh from their show at the Pacific Coliseum. Wilson writes that the foursome seemed oblivious, disappearing into the club's inner-sactum, where Jimmy Page was tended to by "his doctor" before promptly passing out.

When Nancy was on location with her then-husband (and former Rolling Stone scribe) Cameron Crowe while he was directing the 2001 bomb Vanilla Sky, the film's star, Tom Cruise, gave the couple a personally guided tour of Scientology's Celebrity Centre.

The early radio success of "Magic Man" was paid for with hookers and cocaine. The band's publicist would ferry the Wilson sisters to radio appearances where they would meet the DJ, do a station ID and then be told to go wait outside. According to Nancy, "When we were out of the way, he'd pass the DJ a gram of cocaine or the number of a hooker he'd lined up and say 'She's yours, on Heart.' It wasn't until years later that the Wilson sisters found out about the shady dealings that had gone on behind their backs.

The photo negative for a topless picture of Ann Wilson, taken surreptitiously by Annie Leibovitz, is rotting in a safe deposit box. When a shoot with the photographer for the band's Bebe Le Strange-era Rolling Stone cover went south, the band demanded the famed rock photographer destroy her copy; when she refused, Heart took her to court. The judge ordered the negative to be kept in a safe deposit box that could only be opened with two keys – one belonging to Wilson and the other to Leibovitz – insuring it would never see the light of day.

In the fall of 1982, Heart had a brush with the legendary ego of John Cougar Mellencamp. The young singer was opening the band's tour behind Private Audition, Heart's first album that wasn't an immediate million-seller, when Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane" went to number one. He came to the band with a proposition: "Seeing as your album is a turkey and mine is a hit, care to swap places?" The Wilson sisters declined, reminding him that the tour had sold out before he'd even been announced as the opening act.

While Heart was on tour with Van Halen, Alex and Eddie, in their own fumbling, wasted way, suggested a four-way-of-sorts between them. The sisters declined, but later that night, when Nancy learned that Eddie didn't own an acoustic guitar she was incredulous, and she gave him one of her own before sending him on his way. The next morning, after a night-long binge, he called her hotel room and serenaded her over the phone.

Redlight King and singer/songwriter Mark Kasprzyk are up next with the track 'Comeback.' Kasprzyk used to be known as Kazzer. That was about a decade ago. Although he got some traction with the song 'Pedal to the Medal,' Kazzer was only a brief flash in the pan in mainstream music. Now years later, Mark Kasprzyk is no longer Kazzer. He’s just Kaz and he’s front and center in a new project he started called Redlight King.

'Comeback' conveys a message of hope, a message of not giving up no matter how far down you are. You can make a 'Comeback' with this inspirational track. It delivers a message of hope in these troubled times. The song is featured on the 'Avengers Assembled' soundtrack as well as the band's album 'Something For the Pain.' The band has had success with the Neil Young cover 'Old Man' and the previous rock pick of the week 'Bullet In My Hand.'

Red Hot Chili Peppers have released the latest track and video from the 'I'm With You' album. 'Brendan's Death Song,' is a ballad the band wrote in honor of Brendan Mullen, founder of late Seventies Hollywood punk club the Masque. After it was shut down in 1978, Mullen booked shows on the Sunset Strip's Club Lingerie. One day in 1983, Anthony Kiedis and Flea showed up at the club with a boom box and asked Mullen to listen to their demo. He did, and offered them an opening gig for Bad Brains.

"It was a huge step for us to get that gig," Flea said in an interview in 2009. "But in a much more important way, I felt profoundly validated to be accepted and acknowledged by Brendan Mullen, who was a crucial part – a hub – of a scene that for me had mythological status." Mullen suffered a massive stroke and died on the first day that the Chili Peppers were to rehearse with their new guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer.

"When I got to rehearsal I delivered the news to my band that we just lost this beautiful person," said Kiedis, "and then we started playing without really talking. The second thing that came out of that jam was the basis for 'Brendan’s Death Song.'" Keidis also revealed that Mullen was working on a coffee-table book about the band, called 'The Red Hot Chili Peppers: An Oral/Visual History,' when he died.

Check out the jazz funeral-themed video for "Brendan's Death Song," which was shot in one day in New Orleans and directed by Marc Klasfeld.

Papa Roach are back with the new single 'Still Swingin' from the upcoming album 'The Connection.' The band recorded in their home studio in Sacramento and also worked in Tommy Lee's Atrium Studio.

Bassist Tobin Esperance said the band basically lived out of the recording area 24/7 while completing the disc. He laughed about how the band laid down 20 tracks, cut it down to 12, and then decided to write five more.

Some of the album tracks include 'Before I Die,' with electronic-programmed verses and a big rock chorus, 'Where Did the Angels Go,' 'Wish You Never Met Me,' produced by Sixx: A.M.‘s James Michael; 'Not That Beautiful' featuring guest vocalist Shanaz; and 'Leader of the Broken Hearts,' a track Shaddix says was initially influenced by their past favorite, 'Forever.'

Shaddix says that he got sober during the making of the record and also dealt with his wife leaving him, stating: “We wanted to make a dynamic and explosive record that captures the raw emotions of life. We also wanted to incorporate the biological sounds of rock with a digital edge to have a fresh sound. This is our own version of what we think the radio should sound like. This is the soundtrack to my life and once again I went through some dark shit and came through thanks to the music."

Here's a three-and-a-half-minute video clip capturing the creative process that went into the making of the cover artwork for 'The Connection':

Ann and Nancy Wilson will release the new Heart album 'Fanatic' on October 2nd. 'Fanatic' was recorded in hotel rooms and studios up and down the West Coast, with Grammy-winning producer Ben Mink back at the helm with the Wilson sisters drawing from their own lives and personal experiences as inspiration for their music. "Rock Deep (Vancouver)" harkens back to the city where Dreamboat Annie was written; and "Walkin' Good" (a duet with Vancouver resident Sarah McLachlan) captures the joy of finding new life in a new love.

The title song is a celebration of the Wilson's life spirit: Ann and Nancy are fanatics about love, art, truth, and the belief that they can do anything together they set their minds to.

Heart will be touring throughout the summer and fall (June 29-November 17). Alejandro Escovedo and Shawn Colvin will be supporting in October and November. This fall, Ann and Nancy Wilson will be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (followed by a live concert webcast).

The hardcover edition of 'Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll,' will be released by HarperCollins on Sept. 18th. The memoir was penned by Ann & Nancy Wilson with noted Seattle-based author Charles R. Cross ("Room Full of Mirrors - A Biography of Jimi Hendrix"; "Heavier Than Heaven" - a biography of Kurt Cobain).

Here's a podcast on the release of the Heart 'Strange Euphoria,' box set with the title track from 'Fanatic'

Soulicit is comprised of lead vocalist Darick Parson, guitarist Roll, bassist Kevin Parrow & drummer Trent Boehner. The band delivers a straight ahead, energetic, classic hard rocking sound with a sense of humor to boot. Check out the band's hilarious video below and you'll see what I'm talking about.

In September of 2011 Soulicit inked a deal with Thermal Entertainment based out of Greenville, SC. The work began immediately as the band wrapped up recording their first full length label release titled 'Parking Lot Rockstar' which is now being distributed by Megaforce. Check out entire album on the band's official website: www.soulicitrock.com

Heart new album ‘Fanatic’ to be released this October, listen to rocking new tracks

Heart new album ‘Fanatic’ to be released this October, listen to rocking new tracks

Heart's new box set, 'Strange Euphoria,' is out now, but the band also has a new studio album and autobiography on the way. The new album will be titled 'Fanatic,' with the book titled: 'Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll'.' The band have posted two new tracks, and I have to say they are the most rocking songs I have heard from the Wilson sisters in a long time! The title track and 'Dear Old America' hark back to the best of the late 70's/early 80's sound, with a modern touch. On first listen I heard a passion in both, with amazing vocal and guitar work.

Ann Wilson says she's "real excited about" the collection of new tunes. The singer reports that the album is "way more rock-heavy" than Heart's previous record, 2010's 'Red Velvet Car.' "It's got 10 songs on it and I think two of them are what you'd call ballads," Wilson adds. She also reveals that Fanatic is "going to be released on October 2."

Heart's 14th studio album features 10 new songs, including "Fanatic," "Dear Old America," "Walkin' Good" (featuring Sarah McLachlan), "Skin and Bones," "Million Miles," "Pennsylvania," "Mashallah," "Rock Deep (Vancouver)," "59 Crunch," and "Corduroy Road."

"Dear Old America," which Ann says is inspired by the United States' recent military conflicts. "[It's] from the perspective of a soldier in...Afghanistan or Iraq and what it's like to be them and what goes through their mind," she explains, "and coming back to America after they go through that."

Fanatic was recorded in hotel rooms and studios up and down the West Coast, with Grammy-winning producer Ben Mink back at the helm with the Wilson sisters drawing from their own lives and personal experiences as inspiration for their music.

Heart News: New album, memoir and box set on the way, Nancy Wilson gets engaged

Heart News: New album, memoir and box set on the way, Nancy Wilson gets engaged

Heart have announced the release date of their new album 'Fanatic.' It's set to be released on October 2, and will follow the previously announced box set release titled 'Strange Euphoria.' Ann and Nancy Wilson will also put out their memoir around the same time. There is no official release date on the book as of yet, however.

The four-disc box is set for release on June 6, with 50 tracks, including previously unreleased demos, rarities, live cuts and hits, as well as a DVD with a 1976 TV performance. The Wilson sisters have also added commentary.

Ann & Nancy teamed up with Charles Cross, a Seattle author who has written books about Nirvana, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix for their memoir. Nancy said last year, "We’re telling the whole story. I think it’s important to be kind of brutally honest without making anyone else feel bad in any way, if possible. There’s a lot of stuff you remember that’s like, 'Wow, why did I do this with that person?' or 'What was I thinking?!' or 'How controlling was so and so?'"

"It’s definitely not a sensational, tell-tale book because that’s never who we are. There’s going to be some wild parties and some failed relationships, but not too much more dark stuff really."

Nancy said that her older sister has an "incredible' memory, which they mined for material for the book. Nancy also said,"I feel like I’ve had a lot of painful situations that I intentionally delete from my memory. So it’s been really good to have Ann there to remember a lot of this stuff because I think I kind of have defense mechanisms with forgetfulness.'

Nancy Wilson confirmed her engagement to Geoff Bywater, a music industry exec who works for FOX and deals with the tunes that are used on shows like 'Glee' on the band's official Facebook account.

The two are the same age (58) and committed parents with an already happily blended family. She did not share an intended wedding date. Nancy was previously married to movie director Cameron Crowe. They divorsed in 2010.

Here's her FB post:
"Hello good Heartmongers!

Here is the latest love report:

There have been some questions about a certain ring on my left hand and yes- it’s an engagement ring. There’s a new love in my life!

My fiancée Geoff Bywater is a senior exec at Fox who handles the music for
Glee among many other shows.

We are deeply in love, the same age, and both devoted parents. There is so
much happiness we share together, and our blended families too.

Send up a cheer!
Love is GRAND.
Nancy

Congrats to the happy couple, and you can probably look for Heart songs on 'Glee' in the near future.
