Rock Picks of the Week: KXM, Black Stone Cherry, Vandenberg’s MoonKings, Winger, Fuel, Kill Devil Hill

by on Apr.21, 2014, under CD/DVD RELEASES, LINKS, ROCK NEWS, ROCK PICKS, VIDEO

Power Trio Supergroup KXM kicks off Rock Picks this week with their track 'Rescue Me' from their self-titled debut album on Rat Pak Records. KXM is comprised of dUg Pinnick (King’s X) on vocals/bass, George Lynch of (Dokken, Lynch Mob) on guitars and drummer Ray Luzier (Korn). The band takes its name from the combination of the member’s other projects: K from Korn, X from King’s X and M from Lynch Mob.

KXM formed in early 2013 when dUg, George and Ray spoke about trying to get together to jam. The guys came together and the self-titled debut, KXM, was born.

The album is one of the best rock releases of the years thus far, full of powerful tracks from the opening cut 'Stars,' to the lead single, 'Rescue Me.' Every song on the record (which was recorded in a mere 8 days) is quality, showcases each members playing and displaying hard rock, funk, and blues influences. The next single will be 'Gun Fight,' which the band have already filmed a video for. The band have yet to schedule any concerts to play this material live, but they are bound to do so and I for one will have to be there to witness it. Let's hope this is more than a one-off project and these guys continue to make music together. I am interested to see how the band progresses and where they take us musically in the future.

Black Stone Cherry 'Me And Mary Jane'

Black Stone Cherry are back with their crunchy new track 'Me and Mary Jane,' which is the first single from their upcoming new album, 'Magic Mountain.' The Kentucky rockers fourth studio release is due on May 6th, with pre-orders now available. “Me and Mary Jane” is also available for purchase on iTunes.

Bassist Jon Lawhon says of the new album, "A lot of rock music today doesn’t have any soul. It’s all really bland. There’s no attitude. There’s no heart. We all grew up on ‘70s rock, Southern rock, country music and bluesmen like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. On this album, more so than ever, those elements are all in the forefront."

The band recorded with Producer Joe Barresi who's worked with Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age and Tool, among others on the album.

Black Stone Cherry will hit the road in the U.S. supporting Seether for a tour kicking off April 22nd at The Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge, LA. The band will also play numerous festivals during the months of April and May. Check out the itenary below:

Black Stone Cherry Magic Mountain

It is great to have former Vandenberg and Whitesnake guitarist Adrian Vandenberg back with his new band, Vandenberg’s MoonKings. The band's debut effort is out now through Mascot Records and is full of quality tracks that hold up against Adrian's best work from the past.

"The last record I made was with Whitesnake in 1998. Now that I've announced my return, I am really overwhelmed by the thousands of enthusiastic reactions that I've gotten from all over the world. It amazes me how faithful the fans have remained. It's just bizarre," Vandenberg says. And with a smile he adds: "And it just so happens that the MoonKings album is the best record I've ever made. Well, in my modest opinion, anyway. People probably expected the obvious classic rock, but I didn't want to go that route semi-automatically. I wanted to build a bridge between the greatest rock of the seventies and that of today, and I have the feeling that worked out very well."

Why was he away so long you ask? After 13 years in Whitesnake, Adrian needed a break. He was completely idle during his time away from music. He focused on his other passion: Art. There was so much interest in his paintings, that several leading European galleries planned exhibitions of his work. He also was busy as a Dad to his daughter.

The band came together beginning back in 2011, when Adrian was asked to write a song for FC Twente, the football club from his hometown of Enschede that had become the champions of the Dutch premier league the year before. He recruited Jan Hoving, who had previously opened for Whitesnake in Holland several years later, to sing the track, then because the song was going to be performed at FC Twente's victory celebrations for a crowd of 60,000, Adrian needed a rhythm section. He found drummer Mart 'Martman' Nijen-Es through a friend, but he had ironically met Mart about 10 years prior when Adrian was judging a talent contest and came across the then 13 year old drummer. Adrian met his future bass player the same way: "Mart had a buddy he'd been playing with for many years, bass player Sem 'the Sham' Christoffel. Believe it or not, I judged Sem in a different talent contest around the same time I first saw Mart, and he impressed me enormously by casually playing a Jaco Pastorius-like piece. And I let him win as well!"

The band was meant to be, and after that intial performance, Adrian decided these were the guys to surround himself with for a new project. They recorded the MoonKings album with vintage equipment at the famous Wisseloord Studios near Amsterdam, working with tubes compressors, a Neumann microphone from the 1960's, and recording everything with a Neve desk from the 1970's.

Former Whitesnake bandmate David Coverdale makes a guest appearance on the closing ballad 'Sailing Ships,' but first check out the single and lead track on the record 'Lust And Lies,' followed by another video for the mid-tempo track 'Breathing.' The band have been on tour in Europe of late, with no U.S. books as of yet, so here is another band on Rock Picks this week that will be a must see. Maybe KXM and Vandenberg's Moonkings can tour the U.S. together. How fantastic would that be?

Winger 'Rat Race' & 'Midnight Driver Of A Love Machine' and 'Tin Soldier'

It's the 25th Anniversary of Winger and they are back with their first new album in five years, ‘Better Days Comin’,’ which is out April 22 on Frontiers Records. The band have already released three videos for the tracks 'Rat Race' & 'Midnight Driver Of A Love Machine' and 'Tin Soldier,' all solid rock cuts. 'Better Days Comin' is an amazing new record giving members Kip Winger (ex-Alice Cooper), Reb Beach (Whitesnake), Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse) and John Roth (Starship, Giant) a showcase for their immense talents. The entire album kicks ass and already looks to be destined as one of my Top 10 albums of the year.

Check out the triple shot of the band below and make sure you get your copy of 'Better Days Comin.' A deluxe edition of the new album includes one audio bonus track and a DVD including a documentary "Making of the album" and two videoclips.

Kip Winger explains, "We drew from our past to elaborate on our future. The band is stronger than ever, and very excited about the music on this record. We feel it exemplifies our true sound in every way.”

As the fast-paced video’s time-lapse images of a big-city workday illustrate very effectively, ‘Rat Race’ takes a hard look at the pace we’ve set for ourselves in the modern world. “With ‘Rat Race’ we took the term ‘the human race’ literally,” Winger explains. “Everyday on this planet is a fight to the death. No matter how fast you run, someone is always gaining on you.”

You can pre-order the deluxe edition of ‘Better Days Comin” and receive a download of ‘Rat Race’ right now at itunes.apple.com.

Fuel ' Soul To Preach To'

Fuel have been around since 1993, but with vocalist Bret Scallions back in the fold for a new album for the first time in 10 years, the true "sound" of Fuel is back on with new music. The band's latest album (released March 4), 'Puppet String' on MegaForce Records is bringing it back to the band's heydey.

“Rock and roll is very much alive and well on this album,” says Scallions. “We were simply trying to write the best songs we possibly could." Brett wrote the album with guitarist Andy Andersson and bassist Brad Stewart, formerly of Shinedown. “With Andy and Brad, I found the unity I’d always craved.”

Fuel will kick off the next leg of their touring cycle on April 25. Check out all the dates and support Fuel by going to see them live and picking up their newest album. fuelrocks.com

Kill Devil Hill wrap up this week with a track that should have been the one to break this band at active rock radio. Why a band like Kill Devil Hill doesn't get significant airplay on today's rock stations is beyond me. The band, featuring Rex Brown (Pantera, Down) on bass, Mark Zavon (Ratt, W.A.S.P., 40 Cycle Hum) on guitar and Jason "Dewey" Bragg (Pissing Razors) will continue after the departure of legendary drummer Vinny Appice (DIO, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell). He has been replaced by Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative, Danzig, Black Label Society), with the band having just wrapped up a tour with Killswitch Engage in Australia. The band has two U.S. dates scheduled, at Rock On The Range in Columbus, Ohio on May 16 and Rocklahoma in Pryor, Oklahoma on May 24. Glad to hear that this impressive band will continue to hopefully break out on a wider level like they should.

The video for the track "Leave It All Behind," is from from the band's sophomore album, "Revolution Rise."
Comments Brown: "'Leave It All Behind' was shot with a very different approach for us. It's a story board video that intertwines the band with a guy that has faced some apocalyptic demons in his own mind. We shot the video at an old missile site in Southern California that had been burned out by fires years ago."

George Lynch and Lynch Mob return with new vocalist and West coast tour

by on Feb.18, 2014, under LINKS, ROCK NEWS, ROCK TOUR DATES

George Lynch and Lynch Mob return with new vocalist and West coast tour

Lynch Mob will rock the west coast in February, delivering classic favorites and tracks from the latest record while introducing a new vocalist for the diversely-pedigreed band.

For twelve years with Dokken, George Lynch was able to develop a groundbreaking brand of guitar virtuoso that would also earn a Grammy nomination. In the early 1990s, Lynch launched his own project, Lynch Mob, which harnessed the talent of rock’s best players and released several well-received records, from 1990s WICKED SENSATION to the most recent UNPLUGGED. Tracks like “Wicked Sensation,” “River of Love” and “Tangled in the Web” have solidified George Lynch’s position on Guitar World’s list of Greatest Guitarists Of All Time. Live, Lynch Mob is described as desert- infused blues-based rock with a penchant for extended improvising, harkening back to the glorious jam days of the late 60's and early 70's.

“…a guitar hero by anyone’s standards.” Legendary Rock Interviews

“…one of the most gifted musicians on the planet…” Rock Music Star

Lynch’s current work also includes the film “Shadow Nation,” which explores a hybrid way of life, merging modern society with the ancient practices of people who have lived in harmony with the land for thousands of years; native American Indians. The film reveals its message through the journey of a group of renowned musical artists as they share their rock music on a road trip through Indian reservations of the southwest. http://shadowtrainmovie.com/synopsis/ . He has also teamed with Arcane Inc. to create a new signature series of Mr. Scary guitar pickups http://mrscaryguitars.com/pickups/.

The current iteration of Lynch Mob is an unusual combination of rock backgrounds. Bassist Kevin Baldes is an original member of the Orange County alternative rock band Lit. Lit’s platinum album A PLACE IN THE SUN spawned three top ten hits including “My Own Worst Enemy.” He’s also played with Sugarcult, MEST and Good Man Down. Jimmy D’Anda is on drums. With L.A. based rock band BulletBoys and its hit “Smooth Up In Ya,” he earned a Gold album and toured the world with rock’s biggest acts.

Being introduced on this tour is new vocalist Thadeus Gonzalez. With Oakland-based Electric Sister, Tad enjoyed critical acclaim from not only the release of THE LOST ART OF ROCK & ROLL, but also supporting gigs with KISS/Motley Crue, Slash, Black Label Society, and Danko Jones. He’s been called “a frontman to watch” and “a definitive rock ‘n’ roll voice.” The current iteration of Lynch Mob is an unusual combination of rock backgrounds. Power trio KXM (George Lynch, Dug Pinnick and Ray Lazier) new audio samples available

Power trio KXM (George Lynch, Dug Pinnick and Ray Lazier) new audio samples available

A new musical force to be reckoned with is about to turn the rock world upside down with the release of their self-titled debut, KXM. KXM is comprised of dUg Pinnick of King’s X on vocals/bass, George Lynch of Lynch Mob/Dokken on guitars and Korn’s drum maestro, Ray Luzier, rounds out the powerhouse trio. The band takes its name from the combination of the member’s other projects: K from Korn, X from King’s X and M from Lynch Mob.

The self-titled debut of KXM is something truly unique and special. The songs are powerful, precise, and transcend beyond the boundaries of the imagination. In today’s overpopulated music arena, true gems become harder and harder to find, but KXM’s unified vision rises above the normal and creates its own space. From the opening drum riff of “Stars” to the final chord on “Human Friction,” KXM is an album that is sure to resonate with fans from the band’s original projects, while garnering new ones as well. Songs like “Gun Fight,” “Faith Is A Room” and the first single “Rescue Me” are sure to be instant favorites among fans. The band shows their softer side on the ballad “Never Stop” along with their dark side on the tale of domestic violence, “Sleep.”

KXM formed in early 2013 when dUg, George and Ray spoke about trying to jam together. At the time it wasn’t clear what would come from those jams. The only thing that was clear was that these 3 musicians, at the top of their game, wanted to play together. The self-titled debut, KXM, was born from those jam sessions and is now an important piece in each band member’s musical legacy. In a world that constantly searches for new and unique music, KXM delivers all the power and punch that one would expect from these high level players! The self-titled debut album will be released on March 11 via Rat Pak Records. The CD was produced by KXM and Chris Collier, who has worked with Lynch Mob, Lita Ford and Tommy Bolin among others.

A pre-order for the KXM album has been launched on the Rat Pak web site www.ratpakrecords.com. It will be available in various bundles that included signed CDs, CDs and t-shirts, and even a phone call from a bandmember. A 14-minute clip containing audio samples of all the songs that are set to appear on "KXM" can be found below.

George Lynch said about the trio: "I wanted to always do this -- play with guys that have compelling ideas. Its better when we all contribute and then we have this interesting chemistry which is different than what I normally do. That's why this record, when I listen to it, is so special to me."

KXM track listing:
1. Stars
2. Rescue Me
3. Gun Fight
4. Never Stop
5. Faith Is A Room
6. I'll Be OK
7. Sleep
8. Love

Marshall of Rock Top 50 tracks of 2013: 50 to 26

by on Dec.31, 2012, under ROCK NEWS, ROCK PICKS, VIDEO

Marshall of Rock Top 50 tracks of 2013: 50 to 26

Happy New Year everyone! 2012 was a really good year for ROCK, with comeback albums and tracks from the likes of Van Halen, KISS, Aerosmith, Joe Walsh, ZZ Top, Soundgarden, L.A. Guns and so many more. Here's my Top 50 tracks for 2012, kicking off with numbers 50 to 26. Thanks for checking out MarshallofRock.com, and all the best to everyone for an even more rockin' 2013!!

50. Joe Walsh - Analog Man - Joe Walsh released his first solo album in 20 years in 2012, and the title track checks in at number 50. A solid solo return from Joe!

49. ZZ Top - Gotsta Get Paid - After delays due to producer Rick Rubin, ZZ Top released their latest album 'La Futura' in 2012. It featured this track at number 49.

48. The Offspring - Days Go By - Vocalist Dexter Holland just celebrated his 47th birthday on December 29th and sounds as relevant as ever on the title track from the Offspring's latest album that was released this past June.

47. Volbeat - Still Counting - The Copenhagen, Denmark rockers had a mega successful 2012, with this cut at #47, one of my favorites from the 'Beyond Hell/Above Heaven' album. The band will take their fusion of rock and roll, heavy metal, punk and rockabilly back out on the road in early 2013 with openers Danko Jones

46. Chevelle - Face To the Floor - The Illinois rockers really broke out big time in 2012, with massive success with multiple tracks from their 'Hats Off To The Bull' album.

45. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Last of A Dyin' Breed - Title track from the latest Lynyrd Skynyrd album, which is great from start to finish.

44. Linkin Park - Burn It Down - It was hard to escape this track form the 'Living Things' album as Linkin Park continued their many years of massive success with this track.

43. L.A. Guns - You Better Not Love Me - A quality return to the sleazy, hard rocking sound that made the band famous. The band released their first new studio album in 7 years, 'Hollywood Forever', and it lives up to some of the best work the band has ever done. L.A. Guns recently amicably replaced guitarist Stacey Blades with ex-Sea Hags/Arcade guitarist Frankie Wilsey. Look for the band to be back on the road for extensive touring in 2013.

42. Lynch Mob - Slow Drag - A great track from the Lynch Mob E.P. 'Sound Mountain Sessions'. The status of the band is in limbo as of now however, with guitarist George Lynch committed to the T&N project with Jeff Pilson, Mick Brown and Brian Tichy, as well as another power trio project with Dug Pinnick of King's X and Ray Luzier (Korn, Army of Anyone). Vocalist Oni Logan is currently part of the Dio Disciples and bassist Robbie Crane has left the band, so time will tell if we'll get any more new music from these guys in the future, but this track kicks ass!

41. Theory Of A Deadman - Hurricane - Tyler Connolly and Theory Of a Deadman continued their years of success into 2012 with mutiple tracks released from their 'The Truth Is...' album. This is my favorite from the album.

40. Fozzy - Sandpaper - Chris Jericho and Fozzy upped the ante in 2012, getting what is probably the most airplay and recognition in the band's history with this track from their 'Sin And Bones' album. The track features guest vocal from M Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold and rightfully has a place on my Top 50!

39. Van Halen - She's The Woman - Van Halen triumphantly returned in 2012, and while this is not my favorite track on their 'A Different Kind of Truth' album, it warrants the #39 spot on my top tracks of 2012.

38. Bruce Springsteen - Rocky Ground - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band delivered with their 'Wrecking Ball' album, and this track conveyed the message that rock musicians idealism can still and should still have a place in music. I know it does on my list of top tracks.

37. Shinedown - Bully - Shinedown's 'Amaryllis' album is another awesome collection of songs from the band, and this anti-bullying message rocker shows that this band cares about people in a sincere way, while thoroughly rocking!

36. Black Stone Cherry - In My Blood - One of my favorite bands of late, BSC continues to make inroads in rock by not only playing anywhere at anytime to gain new fans, but with great tracks garnering significant airplay. The decision to collaborate with a few outside writers on their last album 'Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea' payed off big time. The band's album was released in 2011, but this track garnered the majority of its airplay in 2012.

35. Adler - The One That You Hated - Steven Adler and his new band have brought an album that is one of the most surprising releases of 2012. 'Back From The Dead' is top to bottom a fantastic album that will carry well into 2013 with other tracks released from the offering. "The One That You Hated' just plain rocks, as does Steven's new bandmates: vocalist Jacob Bunton, guitarist Lonny Paul and bassist Johnny Martin!

34. The Treatment - Nothing To Lose But Our Minds - Another of my personal favorite new bands, these young lads from the U.K. made major inroads in 2012 with great exposure as the opening act on the 'The Tour' with Motley Crue and KISS in the U.S. I expect big things from The Treatment and really think with their musical ability, attitude and charisma, they are going to continue on an upward rise in the U.S.! Check out their album 'This Might Hurt'!

33. Aerosmith - Legendary Child - This was the first track released from the highly anticipated Aerosmith album 'Music From Another Dimension!' The track showcases the unity and sound that only these guys can get when all together. Great track from a great American legendary rock band!

32. Tremonti - You Waste Your Time - Mark Tremonti of Alter Bridge and Creed brought a solo album full of serious metal in 2012. This was the lead track. Tremonti will be continuing to tour in early 2013 with Mark's buddy Wolfgang Van Halen on bass.

31. Dead Sara - Weatherman - The Los Angeles rockers featuring Emily Armstrong (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Sean Friday (drums, backing vocals), Siouxsie Medley (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Chris Null (bass guitar, backing vocals) are one of the most exciting not only new female fronted band, but any band of 2012. I only mention the female part, because vocalist Emily Armstrong is compelling, powerful and is poised to lead this band to the next level and influence a new generation of female rockers. Exciting new band, I can't wait to see their progression in the years to come.

30. Foo Fighters - These Days - A track that got most of it's airplay in 2012, I had to get some Foo Fighters on my Top 50! 'Wasting Light' was one of my top albums of 2011, and it was so good it placed tracks on my year end cuts this year. I'm gonna miss no new Foo in 2013, but they'll be back in 2014!

29. Stone Sour - Gone Soverign/Absolute Zero - Band leader Corey Taylor of Stone Sour continues to be a respected leader in the rock world, seemingly doing no wrong at the moment. 'Absolute Zero' recently went to #1 on the rock tracks charts, but these two tracks are meant to be played together. Stone Sour will be touring with Papa Roach in the U.S. in early 2013.

28. Aranda - Satisfied - The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma rockers bring solid rock chops with feeling in my #28 track. Dameon Aranda, Gabe Aranda, and Mike Walker have delivered 'Stop The World', an album of great music, with this track leading the way.

27. Black Keys - Lonely Boy - The Black Keys were seemingly the golden boys of 2012, with doors opening for their talent, and airplay for their killer tracks. Black Keys are going to be around for a long time and look to be not only the critic's favorites, but also favorites of the masses.

26. Soundgarden - Been Away Too Long - Soundgarden returned in 2012 with the new album 'King Animal', and this track went to number one concurrently on both the active and mainstream rock charts. The band will continue to tour in 2013 and hopefully they will be around for more than one new album and tour.
