Grand Rapid Michigan's own Pop Evil have shown that they are really road warriors that truly care about their fans. They are seemingly always on the road or working to further the reach of the great American Rock N' Roll that they deliver. The band is currently on the Trespass America tour in support of their latest album 'War Of Angels' with Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engine, Trivium and more. I had a chance to chat with Pop Evil drummer Chatchi Riot earlier this week while on the way to Oklahoma City.
Pop Evil are wrapping up the Trespass America Tour this week with the final show on the trek in Los Angeles, before heading out on headlining dates that will take them through September, followed by a Canadian tour through October with Zakk Wylde and Black Label Society that wraps up On Nov. 1st. Their busy touring year then wraps up on the Shiprocked Cruise on Nov. 27th with Godsmack, Korn, Five Finger Death Punch, Black Stone Cherry, P.O.D., Dead Sara, Sevendust, Filter, Lit, Gilby Clarke, In This Moment and more.
I first thanked Chatchi for the band bringing it back to how Rock N' Roll videos are supposed be made with their last single 'Boss's Daughter,' written with and featuring Mick Mars of Motley Crue and A LOT of eye candy, before getting the story on the lastest single (and 4th from 'War Of Angels') 'Purple.' We also touched on the band's past legal issues with their former label, who he can't believe he's met, the next album, their home state of Michigan and some football talk. Look out world, Pop Evil isn't going to stop until everybody know their name!
After our conversation, Chatchi (aka Josh Marunde) shared with me that he's a big 80's hair metal fan and let me know that a couple of videos from the band and the music of Slaughter were an important influence on him, as was the band's drummer Blas Elias. Blas is still drumming for Slaughter and is also playing in the Las Vegas production of Blue Man Group.

Redlight King and singer/songwriter Mark Kasprzyk are up next with the track 'Comeback.' Kasprzyk used to be known as Kazzer. That was about a decade ago. Although he got some traction with the song 'Pedal to the Medal,' Kazzer was only a brief flash in the pan in mainstream music. Now years later, Mark Kasprzyk is no longer Kazzer. He’s just Kaz and he’s front and center in a new project he started called Redlight King.
'Comeback' conveys a message of hope, a message of not giving up no matter how far down you are. You can make a 'Comeback' with this inspirational track. It delivers a message of hope in these troubled times. The song is featured on the 'Avengers Assembled' soundtrack as well as the band's album 'Something For the Pain.' The band has had success with the Neil Young cover 'Old Man' and the previous rock pick of the week 'Bullet In My Hand.'
Redlight King is on the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival along with Shinedown, Godsmack, Staind, Papa Roach, In This Moment and Fozzy. Red Hot Chili Peppers have released the latest track and video from the 'I'm With You' album. 'Brendan's Death Song,' is a ballad the band wrote in honor of Brendan Mullen, founder of late Seventies Hollywood punk club the Masque. After it was shut down in 1978, Mullen booked shows on the Sunset Strip's Club Lingerie. One day in 1983, Anthony Kiedis and Flea showed up at the club with a boom box and asked Mullen to listen to their demo. He did, and offered them an opening gig for Bad Brains.
"It was a huge step for us to get that gig," Flea said in an interview in 2009. "But in a much more important way, I felt profoundly validated to be accepted and acknowledged by Brendan Mullen, who was a crucial part – a hub – of a scene that for me had mythological status." Mullen suffered a massive stroke and died on the first day that the Chili Peppers were to rehearse with their new guitarist, Josh Klinghoffer.
"When I got to rehearsal I delivered the news to my band that we just lost this beautiful person," said Kiedis, "and then we started playing without really talking. The second thing that came out of that jam was the basis for 'Brendan’s Death Song.'" Keidis also revealed that Mullen was working on a coffee-table book about the band, called 'The Red Hot Chili Peppers: An Oral/Visual History,' when he died.
Check out the jazz funeral-themed video for "Brendan's Death Song," which was shot in one day in New Orleans and directed by Marc Klasfeld.
Papa Roach are back with the new single 'Still Swingin' from the upcoming album 'The Connection.' The band recorded in their home studio in Sacramento and also worked in Tommy Lee's Atrium Studio.
Bassist Tobin Esperance said the band basically lived out of the recording area 24/7 while completing the disc. He laughed about how the band laid down 20 tracks, cut it down to 12, and then decided to write five more.
Some of the album tracks include 'Before I Die,' with electronic-programmed verses and a big rock chorus, 'Where Did the Angels Go,' 'Wish You Never Met Me,' produced by Sixx: A.M.‘s James Michael; 'Not That Beautiful' featuring guest vocalist Shanaz; and 'Leader of the Broken Hearts,' a track Shaddix says was initially influenced by their past favorite, 'Forever.'
Shaddix says that he got sober during the making of the record and also dealt with his wife leaving him, stating: “We wanted to make a dynamic and explosive record that captures the raw emotions of life. We also wanted to incorporate the biological sounds of rock with a digital edge to have a fresh sound. This is our own version of what we think the radio should sound like. This is the soundtrack to my life and once again I went through some dark shit and came through thanks to the music."
Here's a three-and-a-half-minute video clip capturing the creative process that went into the making of the cover artwork for 'The Connection':
Ann and Nancy Wilson will release the new Heart album 'Fanatic' on October 2nd. 'Fanatic' was recorded in hotel rooms and studios up and down the West Coast, with Grammy-winning producer Ben Mink back at the helm with the Wilson sisters drawing from their own lives and personal experiences as inspiration for their music. "Rock Deep (Vancouver)" harkens back to the city where Dreamboat Annie was written; and "Walkin' Good" (a duet with Vancouver resident Sarah McLachlan) captures the joy of finding new life in a new love.
The title song is a celebration of the Wilson's life spirit: Ann and Nancy are fanatics about love, art, truth, and the belief that they can do anything together they set their minds to.
Heart will be touring throughout the summer and fall (June 29-November 17). Alejandro Escovedo and Shawn Colvin will be supporting in October and November. This fall, Ann and Nancy Wilson will be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (followed by a live concert webcast).
The hardcover edition of 'Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll,' will be released by HarperCollins on Sept. 18th. The memoir was penned by Ann & Nancy Wilson with noted Seattle-based author Charles R. Cross ("Room Full of Mirrors - A Biography of Jimi Hendrix"; "Heavier Than Heaven" - a biography of Kurt Cobain).
Here's a podcast on the release of the Heart 'Strange Euphoria,' box set with the title track from 'Fanatic'
Soulicit is comprised of lead vocalist Darick Parson, guitarist Roll, bassist Kevin Parrow & drummer Trent Boehner. The band delivers a straight ahead, energetic, classic hard rocking sound with a sense of humor to boot. Check out the band's hilarious video below and you'll see what I'm talking about.
In September of 2011 Soulicit inked a deal with Thermal Entertainment based out of Greenville, SC. The work began immediately as the band wrapped up recording their first full length label release titled 'Parking Lot Rockstar' which is now being distributed by Megaforce. Check out entire album on the band's official website: www.soulicitrock.com
Rush is up first with their amazing new track 'Headlong Flight,' from the 'Clockwork Angels' album, which will be released on June 12th. The over 7 minute track attacks the senses in a way we have come to expect from the band.
Bassist-singer Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer-lyricist Neil Peart have recorded an entire album that follows the same narrative thread — that of a young man's journey to follow his dreams in a dystopian alternate world.
Rush will kick off their North American tour on Sept. 7th in Manchester, New Hampshire, with dates rocking through Dec. 2nd in Houston, Texas. The band will also be this will be headlining the Sweden Rock Festival in June of 2013, their first appearance at a European festival in 33 years! Their show at Sweden Rock Festival will be the only festival appearance in Europe, and the band's first festival appearance since they played at Pinkpop in Holland in 1979. In 2004, Rush played in Sweden for the first time in 25 years, selling out the Globe Arena in Stockholm.

Rival Sons' new video, for the fantastic track 'Face Of Light' is the next Rock Pick of the Week. The video sees a softer side of the band as they go through the beautiful scenery of the Peak District in the English countryside. The video was filmed with director Dan Ruttley during the band's recent sold-out UK tour with Black Stone Cherry.
Frontman Jay Buchanan comments: "I am happy to say that our record Pressure & Time is about to give us our third single with the song 'Face Of Light'. This is a very special song to us and I am delighted to put out a single with a positive message that can still break a tooth. Three singles from one record; I am so thankful for the support we've been shown. This will more than likely be our last single from the P&T record, so it's a fitting farewell to an unforgettable year with a song so personally close to the vest for me."
Rival Sons are ready to kick ass on all the major European rock festivals and have a couple of gigs in June lined up opening for Guns N' Roses in Netherlands and Germany. The band has recently completed recording their second album 'Head Down' in Nashville and it will be released in August on Earache records.
Bruce Springsteen's 'Rocky Ground' is up next from the 'Wrecking Ball' album. The black-and-white clip shows footage of the hands of a number of different people writing out the lyrics of the tune on a notepad superimposed over various urban scenes shot in slow-motion.
The clip was directed by Thom Zimny, Springsteen longtime videographer, whose credits include the 2010 documentary 'The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town.' The Boss makes a brief cameo in the video; see if you can spot him.
We've been traveling over rocky ground and a new day is coming.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played the second-biggest German show of their career on Wednesday (May 30) in Berlin before 55,000 fans. Springsteen played a set focused on new material from Wrecking Ball and an assortment of old favorites, but he opened the night with his first-ever live performance of Wizz Jones' 1973 tune "When I Leave Berlin."
Linkin Park's new album 'Living Things' will be out on June 26th, and the first track 'Burn It Down' is obviously a massive success. It currently sits at #3 on the rock charts, and the band released a video for it last week. Check it out and the 'making of' clip below.
The band's big summer Honda Civic Tour with Incubus kicks off on August 11th in Bristow, Virginia.
Godsmack's cover of the Joe Walsh classic ‘Rocky Mountain Way’ from their 'Live & Inspired' album is up next. The track is rising up into the top 10 of the rock charts, and it's well deserving with their kick ass version of the song for a new generation. The band performed 'Rocky Mountain Way' every night on the recent wrapped Mass Chaos tour with Staind, and now they’ve just released a performance based video for the tune.
My Darkest Days are back with the title track as the next single from their latest album 'Sick And Twisted Affair.' The album was produced by Joey Moi, who has worked with Hinder, Daughtry and Santana. It includes guest musicians John 5 (Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie) along with Three Days Grace members Barry Stock and Neil Sanderson.
The band has posted part 2 of their behind-the-scenes teaser, and in it they describe the tough personal relationships that served as much of the album’s inspiration. “I think we’ve all been in a relationship before that’s just so toxic,” explains lead guitarist Sal Costa. “You want it to be over, but don’t really want it to be over… Just seeing them with another person eats you alive.” “Humans, we’re all just walking contradictions,” adds Walst. The guys are rocking all summer long with Nickelback, Bush and Seether and continue.
“We listen to all types of music. We take stuff from R&B, hip hop, country and bring it into rock and make it something new,” so says My Darkest Days‘ frontman Matt Walst. The band took Joe & Mystikal’s 2007 Top 40 smash single “Stutter,” added a little sex appeal and re-worked it into a rock banger.
After a 16 year absence, reunited hard rockers Ugly Kid Joe are back with new EP called 'Stairway to Hell.' Listen to the full album below and check out the new video for the song 'Devil's Paradise.' The boys from Isla Vista will release the 6-song EP digitally on June 5th and on CD July 9th.
'Stairway To Hell' heralds Ugly Kid Joe's return, containing songs spanning the full repertoire of influences which made Ugly Kid Joe one of the prime soundtracks for young snowboarders, surfers, keggers and characters worldwide. Whether it's 'Devil’s Paradise', with it's hypnotic riffery and hook line, grooving and grinding it's hips seductively, the melodic power-fueled darkness of 'No One Survives' or the irrepressibly memorable chug-n-chorus of 'I'm Alright' it's clear that Ugly Kid Joe have everything they started with plus fatter chops and a (frankly) superior curve on songwriting.
UKJ will be touring Europe this June and July, playing a number of music festivals, including the massive Download Festival. They'll also be the main supporting act for Guns N’ Roses when they perform in Tel Aviv, Israel, on July 3. Drummer Shannon Larkin will likely not be performing with the band on tour, as some of the dates conflict with Godsmack’s touring schedule.
Ugly Kid Joe is:
Whit Crane (vocals)
Klaus Eichstadt (guitar)
Dave Fortman (guitar)
Cordell Crockett (bass)
Shannon Larkin (drums)
