Reuniting for the first time since their collaboration on Black Sabbath’s 1983 Born Again album, Deep Purple´s Ian Gillan and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi took everybody by surprise in 2011 when they released the charity singles,'Out Of My Mind' and 'Holy Water.'
For the recording of these songs, the two rock legends called a few friends, asking for some “help.” Jason Newsted (Metallica), the late Jon Lord (Deep Purple, 1941-2012), Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden), and Linde Lindström (HIM) completed the supergroup WhoCares.
Now, 'Out Of My Mind' and 'Holy Water' will be featured in a special 2 disc set of rarities and recordings culled from the careers of Iommi and Gillan. The WhoCares double CD will be released in North American on August 28th through Eagle Rock Entertainment.
Amongst the tracks are the two original WhoCares songs, Deep Purple’s unreleased studio jam Dick Pimple, a song from Repo Depo (a band Ian Gillan formed before the Deep Purple reunion) which never released an official song before this CD. Also included is 'Zero The Hero,' from the aforementioned Black Sabbath Born Again release (which is the only album to feature Gillan on lead vocals), as well as two unreleased songs from Tony Iommi featuring Glenn Hughes.
The Out Of My Mind and Holy Water singles were a joyful and inspired moment from two musicians with nothing to prove, willing to support music where music is considered a luxury. The spark to bring Iommi and Gillan in a studio together again was to finance the rebuilding of a music school in Armenia they had visited together on various occasions in past years.
“As I said once in the song Razzle Dazzle, it’s a real fine line between an orgy of destruction and a wonderful time,’” states Gillan. “The destruction of conformity in this case: some of these pieces never really fitted into their contemporary program and got sidelined or forgotten, and some of the album tracks never had much exposure. As the track listing for this album came together, I noticed many of the titles had character similarities: a combination of freshness as they finally felt the sun on their backs and rebellion in a ‘yeah told you so’ kind of way. And that adds up to a wonderful time and more money for the music school we are building in Armenia."
“The ad-hoc benefit WhoCares band,” continues Gillan, “was a band put together by Tony Iommi and myself on a flight home from Yerevan, where we’d been deeply humbled by the honor and expectation bestowed upon us. Well that’s it really, in a nutshell, so to speak, what more can I say? It’s all there in the music.”
The release of this very special 2 CD set is a must for all Deep Purple fans and fans of hard rock.

Metallica News: Rocking on upcoming tribute albums, autographed guitar being auctioned for MUSE School
Metallica will be a part of two upcoming tribute albums to rock legends Ronnie James Dio and Deep Purple. The Ronnie James Dio tribute album is being put together by his widow and longtime manager, Wendy Dio. James Hetfield told UK's Metal Hammer magazine: "We reached out to Wendy Dio about wanting to be a part of the Dio tribute that's getting put together. We're very honored to be a part of that, and to be a part of a celebration of Ronnie's life and his great contribution."
Other artists slated to appear on the Dio tribute album include Anthrax, Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford, Motörhead's Lemmy Kilmister, Alice Cooper, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters and Deep Purple lead singer Ian Gillan.
The Deep Purple tribute album will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Deep Purple’s sixth studio album, 'Machine Head.' "We were asked if we'd contribute to the anniversary of Machine Head...we can't turn that down," Metallica drummer and massive Purple fan Lars Ulrich said. "We're circling the Dio and Purple catalogs and hopefully we'll come up with something that is worthy of these wonderful men.'
I think you'll do fine Lars! Sounds like two killer tribute albums on the way.

The long time talked about Dio Tribute album looks like it's going to happen in 2012. An impressive lineup of artists has been lined up so far.
Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Ian Gillan (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath), Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead), Dave Grohl (Nirvana and Foo Fighters), Glenn Hughes (Black Country Communion, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Trapeze), Sebastian Bach (Skid Row), Chris Jericho (Fozzy) are among the confirmed artists so far.
Dio’s widow, Wendy is spearheading the project. Halford will reportedly cover ‘Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll,’ the title track to Dio’s last album with Rainbow, while Grohl is set to tackle ‘The Mob Rules,’ the title track to the second Black Sabbath album with Dio as its singer.
Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce the August 16th release of four double-discs of the deepest of Deep Purple's onstage action: "Scandinavian Nights," "In Concert 1970-1972," "Live In London" and "MK III: The Final Concerts."
"Scandinavian Nights," from 1970, features the most classic of Purple lineups, lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, vocalist Ian Gillan, drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover. Recorded for Swedish radio while on tour in support of their groundbreaking In Rock album. The band, a well-oiled machine of epic proportions, rips through elongated versions of "Speed King," "Into The Fire," "Child In Time," "Wring That Neck," a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" (as a Paice drum solo), "Mandrake Root" and "Black Night."
The same lineup "In Concert 1970-1972" recorded two shows for the BBC. The 1970 show is four songs stretched out to almost 50 minutes in true DP style like no other band ever -- "Speed King," "Child In Time," "Wring That Neck" and "Mandrake Root." In the '72 concert, they performed every song off their classic Machinehead album (except "Pictures Of Home") including a 21-minute version of "Space Truckin'."
This is the first time "Live In London" has been released in the United States on CD. Complete with new frontman David Coverdale and new bassist Glenn Hughes (essentially giving the band two lead singers), the band were back home in London in 1974 performing in support of the Burn album. The band, indeed, burned through the title track, "Might Just Take Your Life," "Lay Down Stay Down," "Mistreated," "Smoke On The Water" and, on Disc #2, "You Fool No One" and "Space Truckin'."
A year later, with no idea its lead guitarist and co-founding member Ritchie Blackmore had already decided to leave the band, Deep Purple, with Coverdale and Hughes now solidly entrenched and performing magnificently, embarked on a European tour in support of Stormbringer. "MK III The Final Concerts" excitingly documents Blackmore's swan song with the band on "Burn," "Stormbringer," "Gypsy," "Lady Double Dealer," "Mistreated," "Smoke On The Water," "You Fool No One," "Space Truckin'," "Going Down/Highway Star," and alternate versions of "Mistreated" and "You Fool No One."
