The legendary Johnny Winter passes away at the age of 70

Incredible sad news reported today as it was confirmed that Blues guitar legend Johnny Winter passed away at the age of 70 in his hotel room in Zurich, Switzerland. A brief statement released from spokesperson Carla Parisi read, "His wife, family and bandmates are all saddened by the loss of one of the world's finest guitarists."

Johnny's brother Edgar and his wife Monique posted the following:

"Hello all, My wife, Monique, and I are shocked at the suddenness of Johnny's passing, especially since I was so looking forward with such joy and anticipation to seeing him again and playing together. I know his body is departing this physical realm, but his presence, his music, and his spirit are undiminished, and alive as ever in my heart.

Johnny has always been, is now, and will forever remain my greatest musical hero of all time. But more than all that, he's my brother--in family, in music, in life and beyond. I will do my best to carry on in honor of his memory and the Winter name.

Blessings Peace & Love,
Edgar & Monique

Johnny Winter began his career at 10 years old with performances on children's TV shows in Texas. He started recording at age 15 and released his first album in 1968, then signed with Columbia Records and released his eponymous first album for the label in 1969. He played with his brother until Edgar left to form his own band in 1970, then with a band including Rick Derringer as "Johnny Winter And" and then continued recording solo albums. He produced three Grammy-winning albums for Muddy Waters and was nominated for several Grammys for his own albums.

Johnny was a pathfinder in turning a minority music from a forgotten age into a World force that helped to power a youth revolution. Johnny inspired a generation of 'roadhouse' rockers. After almost fifty years on the road, Winter played his last show this past Saturday in Austria. RIP Johnny and Thank You for all the joy you brought all of us. Your music will live on forever.

Winter's next studio album, "Step Back," will be released on September 2nd release by Megaforce Records. Guests on the offering including Eric Clapton, Joe Perry, Leslie West, Billy Gibbins, Brian Setzer, Dr. John and Ben Harper.

Johnny Winter RIP

Rock Picks of the Week: KXM, Black Stone Cherry, Vandenberg’s MoonKings, Winger, Fuel, Kill Devil Hill

by on Apr.21, 2014, under CD/DVD RELEASES, LINKS, ROCK NEWS, ROCK PICKS, VIDEO

Power Trio Supergroup KXM kicks off Rock Picks this week with their track 'Rescue Me' from their self-titled debut album on Rat Pak Records. KXM is comprised of dUg Pinnick (King’s X) on vocals/bass, George Lynch of (Dokken, Lynch Mob) on guitars and drummer Ray Luzier (Korn). The band takes its name from the combination of the member’s other projects: K from Korn, X from King’s X and M from Lynch Mob.

KXM formed in early 2013 when dUg, George and Ray spoke about trying to get together to jam. The guys came together and the self-titled debut, KXM, was born.

The album is one of the best rock releases of the years thus far, full of powerful tracks from the opening cut 'Stars,' to the lead single, 'Rescue Me.' Every song on the record (which was recorded in a mere 8 days) is quality, showcases each members playing and displaying hard rock, funk, and blues influences. The next single will be 'Gun Fight,' which the band have already filmed a video for. The band have yet to schedule any concerts to play this material live, but they are bound to do so and I for one will have to be there to witness it. Let's hope this is more than a one-off project and these guys continue to make music together. I am interested to see how the band progresses and where they take us musically in the future.

Black Stone Cherry 'Me And Mary Jane'

Black Stone Cherry are back with their crunchy new track 'Me and Mary Jane,' which is the first single from their upcoming new album, 'Magic Mountain.' The Kentucky rockers fourth studio release is due on May 6th, with pre-orders now available. “Me and Mary Jane” is also available for purchase on iTunes.

Bassist Jon Lawhon says of the new album, "A lot of rock music today doesn’t have any soul. It’s all really bland. There’s no attitude. There’s no heart. We all grew up on ‘70s rock, Southern rock, country music and bluesmen like Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. On this album, more so than ever, those elements are all in the forefront."

The band recorded with Producer Joe Barresi who's worked with Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age and Tool, among others on the album.

Black Stone Cherry will hit the road in the U.S. supporting Seether for a tour kicking off April 22nd at The Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge, LA. The band will also play numerous festivals during the months of April and May. Check out the itenary below:

Black Stone Cherry Magic Mountain

It is great to have former Vandenberg and Whitesnake guitarist Adrian Vandenberg back with his new band, Vandenberg’s MoonKings. The band's debut effort is out now through Mascot Records and is full of quality tracks that hold up against Adrian's best work from the past.

"The last record I made was with Whitesnake in 1998. Now that I've announced my return, I am really overwhelmed by the thousands of enthusiastic reactions that I've gotten from all over the world. It amazes me how faithful the fans have remained. It's just bizarre," Vandenberg says. And with a smile he adds: "And it just so happens that the MoonKings album is the best record I've ever made. Well, in my modest opinion, anyway. People probably expected the obvious classic rock, but I didn't want to go that route semi-automatically. I wanted to build a bridge between the greatest rock of the seventies and that of today, and I have the feeling that worked out very well."

Why was he away so long you ask? After 13 years in Whitesnake, Adrian needed a break. He was completely idle during his time away from music. He focused on his other passion: Art. There was so much interest in his paintings, that several leading European galleries planned exhibitions of his work. He also was busy as a Dad to his daughter.

The band came together beginning back in 2011, when Adrian was asked to write a song for FC Twente, the football club from his hometown of Enschede that had become the champions of the Dutch premier league the year before. He recruited Jan Hoving, who had previously opened for Whitesnake in Holland several years later, to sing the track, then because the song was going to be performed at FC Twente's victory celebrations for a crowd of 60,000, Adrian needed a rhythm section. He found drummer Mart 'Martman' Nijen-Es through a friend, but he had ironically met Mart about 10 years prior when Adrian was judging a talent contest and came across the then 13 year old drummer. Adrian met his future bass player the same way: "Mart had a buddy he'd been playing with for many years, bass player Sem 'the Sham' Christoffel. Believe it or not, I judged Sem in a different talent contest around the same time I first saw Mart, and he impressed me enormously by casually playing a Jaco Pastorius-like piece. And I let him win as well!"

The band was meant to be, and after that intial performance, Adrian decided these were the guys to surround himself with for a new project. They recorded the MoonKings album with vintage equipment at the famous Wisseloord Studios near Amsterdam, working with tubes compressors, a Neumann microphone from the 1960's, and recording everything with a Neve desk from the 1970's.

Former Whitesnake bandmate David Coverdale makes a guest appearance on the closing ballad 'Sailing Ships,' but first check out the single and lead track on the record 'Lust And Lies,' followed by another video for the mid-tempo track 'Breathing.' The band have been on tour in Europe of late, with no U.S. books as of yet, so here is another band on Rock Picks this week that will be a must see. Maybe KXM and Vandenberg's Moonkings can tour the U.S. together. How fantastic would that be?

Winger 'Rat Race' & 'Midnight Driver Of A Love Machine' and 'Tin Soldier'

It's the 25th Anniversary of Winger and they are back with their first new album in five years, ‘Better Days Comin’,’ which is out April 22 on Frontiers Records. The band have already released three videos for the tracks 'Rat Race' & 'Midnight Driver Of A Love Machine' and 'Tin Soldier,' all solid rock cuts. 'Better Days Comin' is an amazing new record giving members Kip Winger (ex-Alice Cooper), Reb Beach (Whitesnake), Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse) and John Roth (Starship, Giant) a showcase for their immense talents. The entire album kicks ass and already looks to be destined as one of my Top 10 albums of the year.

Check out the triple shot of the band below and make sure you get your copy of 'Better Days Comin.' A deluxe edition of the new album includes one audio bonus track and a DVD including a documentary "Making of the album" and two videoclips.

Kip Winger explains, "We drew from our past to elaborate on our future. The band is stronger than ever, and very excited about the music on this record. We feel it exemplifies our true sound in every way.”

As the fast-paced video’s time-lapse images of a big-city workday illustrate very effectively, ‘Rat Race’ takes a hard look at the pace we’ve set for ourselves in the modern world. “With ‘Rat Race’ we took the term ‘the human race’ literally,” Winger explains. “Everyday on this planet is a fight to the death. No matter how fast you run, someone is always gaining on you.”

You can pre-order the deluxe edition of ‘Better Days Comin” and receive a download of ‘Rat Race’ right now at itunes.apple.com.

Fuel ' Soul To Preach To'

Fuel have been around since 1993, but with vocalist Bret Scallions back in the fold for a new album for the first time in 10 years, the true "sound" of Fuel is back on with new music. The band's latest album (released March 4), 'Puppet String' on MegaForce Records is bringing it back to the band's heydey.

“Rock and roll is very much alive and well on this album,” says Scallions. “We were simply trying to write the best songs we possibly could." Brett wrote the album with guitarist Andy Andersson and bassist Brad Stewart, formerly of Shinedown. “With Andy and Brad, I found the unity I’d always craved.”

Fuel will kick off the next leg of their touring cycle on April 25. Check out all the dates and support Fuel by going to see them live and picking up their newest album. fuelrocks.com

Kill Devil Hill wrap up this week with a track that should have been the one to break this band at active rock radio. Why a band like Kill Devil Hill doesn't get significant airplay on today's rock stations is beyond me. The band, featuring Rex Brown (Pantera, Down) on bass, Mark Zavon (Ratt, W.A.S.P., 40 Cycle Hum) on guitar and Jason "Dewey" Bragg (Pissing Razors) will continue after the departure of legendary drummer Vinny Appice (DIO, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell). He has been replaced by Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative, Danzig, Black Label Society), with the band having just wrapped up a tour with Killswitch Engage in Australia. The band has two U.S. dates scheduled, at Rock On The Range in Columbus, Ohio on May 16 and Rocklahoma in Pryor, Oklahoma on May 24. Glad to hear that this impressive band will continue to hopefully break out on a wider level like they should.

The video for the track "Leave It All Behind," is from from the band's sophomore album, "Revolution Rise."
Comments Brown: "'Leave It All Behind' was shot with a very different approach for us. It's a story board video that intertwines the band with a guy that has faced some apocalyptic demons in his own mind. We shot the video at an old missile site in Southern California that had been burned out by fires years ago."

New band featuring David Ellefson (Megadeth) and Frank Bello (Anthrax) to release E.P. early next year

by on Dec.15, 2013, under CD/DVD RELEASES, LINKS, ROCK NEWS

New band featuring David Ellefson (Megadeth) and Frank Bello (Anthrax) to release E.P. early next year

After first writing music while traveling together during the "Metal Masters" clinics, fellow bass players Dave Ellefson of Megadeth and Frank Bello of Anthrax have now announced the formation of a new band called Altitudes & Attitude, and will will get a new release next month!

A self-titled E.P. will be released by Megaforce Records on January 14. Listen to the E.P. here

Altitudes & Attitude is:
Frank Bello on lead vocals, electric guitar, 8-string bass guitar
David Ellefson on 4-, 5- and 8-string bass guitars, rhythm guitars
Jeff Friedl (A Perfect Circle) on drums and percussion

"What started out as simple bass ideas quickly developed into some really great songs together", says Ellefson. "Our fans would probably never suspect that a couple of Metal bass players would have songs like these inside of us. It's exciting to write melody with diversity while still pushing the limits of lead-bass playing. Frank's singing, and both of us playing guitars and other instruments, gave us a whole NEW dimension for creative opportunities".

"We thought it would be cool to let fans hear something they wouldn't expect from us — which is what Altitudes & Attitude is", added Bello.

Altitudes & Attitude track listing:
1. Booze & Cigarettes
2. Tell The World
3. Here Again - featuring guest lead guitar from Gus G (Firewind, Ozzy Osbourne)

Skid Row new E.P. ‘United World Rebellion – Chapter One’ to be released on April 16th by Megaforce Records

by on Feb.24, 2013, under CD/DVD RELEASES, LINKS, ROCK NEWS

Skid Row new E.P. ‘United World Rebellion – Chapter One’ to be released on April 16th by Megaforce Records

Skid Row have signed with Megaforce Records. The band’s new E.P., 'United World Rebellion – Chapter One', will be released in North America on April 16th, with an international release date to be announced shortly. Skid Row guitarist Dave “Snake” Sabo said, “We’ve known the Megaforce family and their various incarnations since 1982. Their history and legacy speaks for itself. We always thought that at some point we would work together and this turned out to be the perfect time and vehicle for us to finally do it. They have a sincere belief in what we’re doing and what our vision is which is really rare today. Needless to say, this is a very exciting time for us!”

United World Rebellion – Chapter One is the first of three E.P.'s that will be made available over the next 12-18 months.

Bassist Rachel Bolan explains, “We wanted to do something different. Living in an age of information overload, it seemed like the perfect time to try something new. We came up with the idea to release three consecutive EPs over the course of the next year or so. This way we have new music out there on a consistent basis. And who better to do that with than Megaforce? They practically invented the EP! United World Rebellion – Chapter One ROCKS!”

To coincide with the release, the band (Sabo, Bolan, vocalist Johnny Solinger, guitarist Scotti Hill and drummer Rob Hammersmith) will embark on a world tour beginning April 4th in Ipswitch, England. This will carry them through the UK along with stops in the Czech Republic, Sweden, Mexico and Korea just to name a few. In the coming months this will be followed by a full-on North American tour.

The Black Crowes end hiatis, will tour U.K. and U.S. in 2013

by on Dec.26, 2012, under ROCK NEWS, ROCK TOUR DATES

The Black Crowes end hiatis, will tour U.K. and U.S. in 2013

The Black Crowes have ended their three year hiatis, and have announced tour dates in the U.S. and U.K. for 2013. The Crowes will kick off a five-show U.K. tour this March and follow that with a 21-date U.S. tour that will end in early May in New Orleans.

This ends the second three-year hiatus in the band’s career, as they split up in 2002 before reuniting in 2005. In a 2010 interview with Billboard, Crowes frontman Chris Robinson said the band's decision to take a break wasn't the result of any internal strife, like was the case when they split in 2002.

"The real story is it's been five solid years of touring and three records and DVDs, and it's more about having a little bit of space and taking a breath away from the thing. I think everyone's in a good space, and our hiatus is for nothing but health reasons, mental and physical, and to have the freedom to do some projects with other people, raise the kids and stuff like that."

The band have announced vinyl release of the live "Wiser For The Time" album (Silver Arrow/Megaforce Records) on March 19th. It includes four vinyl albums, with 26 songs (15 acoustic and 11 electric) from the band’s five-night, sold-out New York City performances in the fall of 2010. These never-released-before versions will also be available as a double album digital download.

Black Crowes band members Chris Robinson (lead vocals, guitar), Rich Robinson (guitar, vocals), Steve Gorman (drums), Sven Pipien (bass) and Adam MacDougall (keyboardist) have also announced the addition of good friend Jackie Greene on guitar and vocals.

As a Christmas gift to their fans, the band is offering via their web site a free mobile web app. It includes a free download of the acoustic version of "Under A Mountain" (the "Three Snakes And One Charm" song which contains the lyrics "Lay down with number 13") performed live in New York City in 2010. This offering is exclusive and not included on "Wiser For The Time".
