The Winery Dogs ‘Dog Camp’ ready to kick off on July 21st

The Winery Dogs ‘Dog Camp’ ready to kick off on July 21st

Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, and Richie Kotzen of The Winery Dogs are ready to host their "Dog Camp," an unforgettable program that will enable campers to get up close and personal with three legends as they attend instrument-specific clinics, learn songwriting mechanics, and enjoy intimate performances from the group.

Dog Camp will be held July 21st-25th at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, New York. The Winery Dogs are excited to have drummer & percussionist, Mike Bennett (Richie Kotzen, Bruno Mars, Hilary Duff, Stevie Wonder) on board as a special guest camp counselor.

Mike Portnoy says about the camp: "If you’re a drummer, we’ve got a course path for you. If you’re a bassist, we have you covered. Same thing goes for guitar players. However, it’s going to be a much deeper experience. We’ll be living together, hanging together, and jamming together. We want you to ask as many questions as possible, and we’re going to engage you on a one-on-one basis to help you realize your goals as a player.

In addition to the instrument-centric sessions, we’re going to offer classes from the entire band with the three of us leading. During these, you’ll get to learn more about the craft of songwriting, and we’ll answer any and all questions about the music industry. We want to dispel the myths and show you what’s really up!"

“Having a band-taught class is a unique concept,” says Richie Kotzen. “We’re a unique band in the sense that we’re all very strong personalities in the way we play. When Billy plays the bass, you know it’s Billy Sheehan. He has his thing. It’s the same thing with Mike. I’d like to think the same about myself! As individuals, we have personalities, but when we come together, it creates something else. This is something that’s so cool to explore in a clinic or class setting.”

One of the things that we’re all looking forward to is the performance aspect. We’re going to play live for you, giving a series of very intimate concerts. This is the best way to see The Winery Dogs, and we’re going to bring it. It’s about to get rowdy."

“I want to emphasize that players should keep an eye on what we’re doing and why during the performances,” adds Sheehan. “In between songs or mid-song, I want to stop to make a point about what’s going on and why. This is what happens. This is how it got here. This is why you need to know this. The ensemble playing and expertise of being able to play ensemble is a bit of a lost art with kids today. They don’t do what we did when we were growing up. Right away, we just got in a band whether we could play or not. We were in bands before we knew how to play. Now, kids want to get up to a level of expertise and then join the band. The band experience is where I got everything I have. That’s the focal point of the performances.”

Able to easily cross many contemporary and world genres, Bennett has performed with artists such as Hilary Duff, Richie Kotzen, Benise, Mary Mary, Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars, Sabrina Carpenter, Slash, Stevie Wonder, Marie Digby, Jamie Foxx, Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band and many others on stages around the globe. Co-Owner of Music Evolutions Studios, he keeps up an active schedule recording for projects around the world in their state of the art recording studio. He has also authored the Demystifying Drumming book series and continues to present clinics and workshops around the world.

Mike Bennett is proud to be an artist and clinician for Yamaha Drums & Electronics, Sabian Cymbals, Latin Percussion, Aquarian Drum Heads & XLN/Addictive Drums software.  check out more on Mike at: www.musicevolutions.com

'The Winery Dogs Special Edition' will be comprised of two CDs. Disc 1 is the standard album and Disc 2 is the live 'Unleashed In Japan 2013', with 10 songs recorded live in Japan during their tour this past July, The track 'Criminal,' previously unavailable in the U.S., along with a 16-page booklet of live photos and lyrics will also be a part of the release.

'Time Machine' comes from the original and special versions of the album, and while the video has been out for some time, it deserves to be recognized and receive significant rock radio airplay. Request this track and this band on your local rock stations!

The Winery Dogs just got off the boat on the Monsters of Rock cruise and will continue to tour the U.S. through June, followed by a seven date European tour that includes a set at the Sonisphere Festival. Blackberry Smoke - 'Shakin' Hands With The Holy Ghost'

Atlanta, Georgia's own Blackberry Smoke have been around for over 13 years now perfecting their brand of country-rock and doing it right. Their latest album, 'The Whippoorwill' was recorded in just five days in an old Methodist church in Ashville, North Carolina and is full of great southern vibed rock and country tinged tracks. The band are signed to Zac Brown Band's record label Southern Ground, and have done extensive touring supporting the Zac Brown Band. They are currently on a headlining U.S. tour that will take them into August. The U.S. tour includes stops at the Bonaroo Festival in June, and The Peach Music Festival in August. They'll head over to Europe in October and November, before wrapping up their touring year on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man Cruise from Nov. 16-20.

Blackberry Smoke shot a video for their track 'Shakin’ Hands With The Holy Ghost' in London last year, after playing the Classic Rock Awards after-show party. Watch the kick ass results. These guys are the real deal and deserve to break big in the U.S.

Jake E. Lee's Red Dragon Cartel - 'Deceived'

It is good to have Jake E. Lee back. Let me repeat...it is good to have Jake E. Lee back. His new project's self-titled debut album has been out for a bit on Frontiers Records, and it really is a quality collection with many different guest vocalists as well as main man DJ Smith.

Big-name guests on the album like Paul Di’Anno (ex-Iron Maiden), Rex Brown (Kill Devil Hill, ex-Pantera), Todd Kearns and Brent Fitz (Slash), Scott Reeder (ex-Kyuss), Maria Brink (In This Moment), Jeremy Spencer (Five Finger Death Punch), Robin Zander & Tom Petersson (Cheap Trick) and Sass Jordan (SUN) help make it an interesting album to listen to, but it comes down to the core band. Bassist Ronnie Mancuso and drummer Jonas Fairley join Jake and Smith on this pick, and this may just be the best song on the album.

Jake E Lee Red Dragon Cartel album cover

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band - 'Just Like Fire Would'

One of the better tracks on the 'High Hopes' album from the Boss, who will be inducting his own E Street Band into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next week. The album was panned a bit by critics for not being a completely evolved project, as most of the tracks were left over from his previous album. The addition of Tom Morello to the band has added a new dynamic, but I would to hear what more new music with his involvement will sound like, as I hope he can bring Bruce a little more rage with the next project. Morello will also be a part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, as he has been tapped to induct KISS.

Bruce and The E Street Band will be back on the road in the U.S. starting April 6 in Dallas. The tour will continue through May and include a stop at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on May 3.

HBO will premiere 'Bruce Springsteen’s High Hopes,' chronicling the making of his 18th studio album, tomorrow night (April 4) at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.

The half-hour documentary by Grammy and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny delves into the making of 'High Hopes,' which reached the No. 1 position in 20 countries after its January release. The film features rare behind-the-scenes studio and rehearsal segments, exclusive E Street Band tour footage and revealing interviews with Springsteen and album collaborator Tom Morello, guitarist for Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. The two discuss their artistic choices for the project and how Morello brought a distinctive twist to Springsteen’s material.

Dream Theater - 'The Enemy Inside'

This great Dream Theater cut comes from the band's self-titled 12th studio album. It’s the second record to feature Mike Mangini on drums after Mike Portnoy’s departure in 2010, and the first time Mangini has had the contributed as a writer, since the material for 2011 album 'A Dramatic Turn Of Events' was already completed before he joined the band.

Guitarist John Petrucci says about the album, "This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We’ve fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic.”

The latest track and video highlights the epidemic of returning U.S. war veterans suicide rates. More U.S. military personnel and returning veterans have died by suicide since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began than have died fighting there. The video includes actualities from actual returning vets, and shows the difficulty of adjusting back onto society after dealing with the atrocities of war. The video concludes with an update on the soldiers featured, and the www.saveawarrior.org webiste link, which you can go to and find out how you can help.

Dream Theater are currently on a U.S. tour until April 20, with dates continuing in Mexico, with European and South American dates keeping them busy until the end of July.

Lynam - 'Cold'

The Birmingham, Alabama rockers Lynam, led by frontman and songwriter Jacob Bunton, were originally formed in 2001, and have released multiple albums over the years. The band released 3 albums independently from 2002 - 2004 (White Trash Superstar, Bling! Bling!, and Life In Reverse), then in 2005, Lynam signed a deal with DRT/Universal Records and released the critically acclaimed album 'Slave To The Machine' in 2006. This album peaked at #21 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart and #19 on the Heat- seekers chart. The first single ‘Tanis’ went to #1 on both the active rock independent and main-stream rock independent charts. The band’s album 'Tragic City Symphony' (Megaforce/Mascot Records) featured the radio singles ‘Save My Soul’, ‘Lindsay Says’, and ‘Porn Star’. All three singles reached the top 10 on the active rock independent chart with ‘Save My Soul’ reaching top 5 with over 10 million in audience. Several of the album’s songs also were used in motion pictures, MTV, VH1, HBO, and video games. A Live album entitled 'Thank You Goodnight!' was released in November 2010 through Island Def Jam/New Ocean Media.

Bunton branched out, recording and joining Steven Adler's lastest project, Adler, but that project is in limbo for the moment. Jacob's Adler band mate Lonny Paul has since joined Lynam, along with returning bassist Mark Dzier. Their newest E.P. 'Halfway To Hell,' includes the blistering rock track 'Cold.' Lynam will be on the road all Summer long and into the Fall. Check out the band's facebook page for all the upcoming dates and check them out if they will be rocking near you!

Lynam Halfway To Hell album cover

Heaven's Basement - 'Nothing Left To Lose'

The UK rockers already made some inroads in the U.S. with their first track 'Fire, Fire' from their debut album 'Filthy Empire,' and now they have ascended even further up the charts with 'Nothing Left To Lose.'

The band consists of Aaron Buchanan (Vocals), Sid Glover (Guitar), Rob Ellershaw (Bass) and Chris Rivers (Drums). They are currently on their first major headlining tour of Europe, after touring the U.S. at the tail end of last year and earlier this year with the likes of Alice Cooper, Papa Roach, Bullet For My Valentine, Pop Evil and The Pretty Reckless. The band will follow the Europe tour with gigs in Latin America, then return to the U.S. starting May 6 in Pittsburgh for a slate of shows that will include Rock On The Range in Columbus, OH. and Rocklahoma in Pryor, OK.

Heaven's Basement's high octane brand of rock is certain to carry them even further in U.S. popularity. Their latest album is full of potential radio tracks and I can see Heaven's Basement headlining U.S. gigs at some point in the near future.

Calling all aspiring musicians of all levels and ages! The Winery Dogs ‘Dog Camp’ set for July 21-25

Calling all aspiring musicians of all levels and ages! The Winery Dogs ‘Dog Camp’ set for July 21-25

One of the bands carrying the torch for quality rock have announced their first annual immersive program for aspiring musicians of all ages and levels. The Winery Dogs, Richie Kotzen, Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan are bringing 'Dog Camp' to the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY this July 21-25.

The event will be produced by Dreamcatcher Events, and campers will get the opportunity to get up close and personal with The Winery Dogs, with instrument-specific and songwriting mechanics clinics, and there will be special intimate performances and jam sessions from The Winery Dogs and other special guests.

Tickets for Dog Camp are on sale now at www.winerydogcamp.com. Attendees will have access to all workshops, seminars, gourmet meals, performances, jam sessions, and camp activities. The band has also set up a facebook page for the event as well: www.facebook.com/WineryDogCamp

“We’ve all done clinics over the years, but it’s always been something that’s primarily centered around one instrument that each of us has typically done on an individual basis,” says drummer Portnoy. “Dog Camp is the first time that any of us have hosted or participated in a true ‘Band Camp.’ As a result of that, we’ve got some incredible surprises in store for everybody attending.”

“We’ll be living together, hanging together, and jamming together,” Portnoy continues. “We want you to ask as many questions as possible, and we’re going to engage you on a one-on-one basis to help you realize your goals as a player.”

“Having a band-taught class is a unique concept,” says Kotzen.

It’s about to get rowdy.

“What’s interesting is to talk about music, concepts, objectives, reasons why you’re playing the instrument, what you want to achieve, and how to get to that point, rather than talking about major versus minor scales. I love that feeling of sharing concepts with people. In The Winery Dogs, we all have various experiences that a lot of other people don’t have. It’s an opportunity to share that and grow; the feeling of moving forward and learning and experiencing something new. That’s what excites me about Dog Camp. It’s the creative process and creativity that make me want to do music, and I want to share that.”

“I want to emphasize that players should keep an eye on what we’re doing and why during the performances,” adds bassist Sheehan. “In between songs or mid-song, I want to stop to make a point about what’s going on and why. The expertise of being able to play ensemble is a bit of a lost art with kids today. They don’t do what we did when we were growing up. Right away, we just got in a band whether we could play or not. Now, kids want to get up to a level of expertise and then join a band.”

“[During the seminars] I like to have back-and-forth communication,” Sheehan continues. “I want to speak with people and hear their opinions, disagreements, and challenges. I believe anyone who attends will see a jumpstart in their quest to achieve their dreams.”

There is different pricing options and all activities will be held at the one hundred-acre Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY. Accomodations include comfortable, rustic country-inn accommodations and tent camping. There is a spring-fed swimming pool, on-site access to the Esopus Creek, and you can explore the splendors of the Catskills on the nearby network of hiking trails. Dedicated to the celebration of nature, music and the arts, this wonderland of mountains, fields, and streams is a world of its own.

The Winery Dogs are set to release two new special versions of their self-titled and self-produced debut album this April. 'Dog Treats: The Winery Dogs Deluxe Special Edition' will be sold in a box resembling a box of dog treats, Special Edition release, a DVD featuring four music videos with interview footage, demos from the original recording sessions, a studio diary written by Mike Portnoy, and some unique merchandise unavailable elsewhere.

Marshall of Rock Top 20 Albums of 2013

by on Jan.04, 2014, under ROCK NEWS, ROCK PICKS

Marshall of Rock Top 20 Albums of 2013

Now that 2013 was here and gone like a flash, I have finally realized it and gotten my Top Album of 2013 posted. There was a lot of great music released. Some were unexpected gems, some had high expectations and sucked, and others still made me believe that some of today's rock can hold up some years from now. Not too much of that, but still some entertaining and riveting music to ROCK to. Check out my Top 20:

20. Jared James Nichols - Old Glory & The Wild Revival

This 5-track E.P. from the 22 year old blues rock prodigy kicks off with an amazing track called 'Blackfoot,' and the rest of the album's material firmly adds this young guitar great to the list of potential future legends. This Berklee College of Music alum is that good. Recognize and do it now. A full album will follow this Spring.

Jared James Nichols EP cover

19. Buckcherry - Confessions

Another great album from a band that continues to not get the acclaim they deserve for what they are...a truly great American Rock band. While these guys have had multiple great albums over the years and a wealth of fantastic material, I really feel they should be more well known in all rock circles. This was a bit of a departure for the band, but still delivered as Buckcherry always do.

Buckcherry Confessions album cover

18. Joe Satriani - Unstoppable Momentum

Joe brought forth another great album of material in 2013 that generally lives up to that of his past. Music you can feel from Joe, right when we needed it. There just aren't any artists around anymore that not only do what Joe does, but does it this well every time.

Joe Satriani Unstoppable Momentum album cover

17. Tedeshi Trucks Band - Made Up Mind

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi put their solo bands on hiatus to form a new group in 2010 that lets the married couple focus on making music together. We are so glad they did. 'Made Up Mind' is the band's third album and continues the feel good blues vibe of their previous studio and live album releases. I have yet to see Tedeshi Trucks Band live, but with dates booked in 2014, I hope to get the chance to see these fantastic musicians and their bandmates perform this great material live.

Tedeshi Trucks Band Made Up Mind album cover

16. Alter Bridge - Fortress

Alter Bridge returned with their new album 'Fortress' in 2013, and it delivered the combo of intense in your face rock along with the emotion and connecting mid tempo tracks that the band puts into each and every release. Alter Bridge has yet to tour the U.S. behind this release, but have multiple dates on tap for 2014. I expect the album to get a resurgence on the charts and hopefully with radio airplay for more of these deserving tracks.

Alter Bridge Fortress album cover

15. Monster Truck - Furiosity

The Canadian rockers from Hamilton, Ontario bring it big time on this, their first full-length album. The band had released two EP's previous to this album, but I was glad to finally discover the band behind this latest release. The band mixes their hard rock, punk and classic rock influences and it comes out crushing like a Monster Truck. To me there is a harder rocking Skynyrd vibe, which I really dig. The band won the 2013 Juno Award for breakthrough album of the year and theyplayed the Download Festival in 2013. They've toured with Slash and others in the U.S. in the past and will be touring in the U.S. with Buckcherry later this month, so look for them and show your support! I really dig their vibe and hope bigger things in the future for them.

Monster Truck album cover

14. Black Star Riders - All Hell Breaks Loose

The band that previously toured as Thin Lizzy decided to recharge with a new album and a new band name and the result was a much acclaimed offering that checks in at #15 on my list for 2013. While still holding onto a core sound, Black Star Riders collectively have a new energy and a exciting future that begins with this album.

Black Star Riders All Hell Breaks Loose album cover

13. John Fogerty - Wrote A Song For Everyone

Fogerty brought a new energy to many of his Creedence Clearwater Revival classic tracks and added some great new songs to this collaborative collection. The likes of Kid Rock, Bob Seger, Foo Fighters and Tom Morello joined country artists Zac Brown Band, Alan Jackson and Miranda Lambert on the album with Fogerty, creating some unique new versions of his songs.

John Fogerty Wrote A Song For Everyone album cover (2)

12. Anthrax - Anthems

The sixth EP from the legendary thrash rockers brings versions of the band's favorites from the 1970's together, along with two versions of "Crawl", a song from their previous studio album. Featured covers on the album include 'Anthem' (Rush cover), 'T.N.T.' (AC/DC cover), 'Smokin' (Boston cover), 'Keep On Runnin' (Journey cover), 'Big Eyes' (Cheap Trick cover) and 'Jailbreak' (Thin Lizzy cover).

Anthrax Anthems album cover

11. Alice In Chains - The Devil Put The Dinosaurs Here

The fifth studio album from Alice In Chains, and the second with singer William DuVall, peaked at #2 in the U.S. charts and featured some great tracks like 'Hollow,' 'Stone,' and 'Voices.' The rest of the album has moments, and while not to the level of 2009's 'Black Gives Way To Blue,' overall it warrants a Top 15 finish on my top albums of 2012.

Alice In Chains album cover

10. Pearl Jam - Lightning Bolt

Pearl Jam's tenth studio album continued and added to the band's acceptance and future Hall of Fame credentials. The guys are aging graceful, delivering moments of the 90's angst, with an adult and contemporary sound on other tracks. It all works and delivers 'Lightning Bolt' into my Top 10.

Pearl Jam Lighting Bolt album cover

9. Stryper - No More Hell To Pay

Christian rockers Stryper delivered an album stronger than I anticipated and worthy of a Top 10 finish on my list. Micheal Sweet has showed what an amazing talent and leader of the band he is, with his producing, singing, and guitar skills all showcased along with other long time band members Oz Fox, Robert Sweet and Tim Gaines. Stryper's 'No More Hell To Pay' way truly one of the year's rock surprises.

8. Queensryche - Redemption

If it wasn't obvious before it's release, this version of Queensryche with all the original members of the band and new singer Todd LaTorre, trumped the Geoff Tate version by far after it. The album is all quality material, and the addition of LaTorre has added a new passion that was seemingly missing with the last few Queensryche records. We shall see if Tate answers in 2014 with an album of his own, but this will be tough to beat.

7. Motorhead - Aftershock

Despite Lemmy Kimister's recent health issues in 2013, the new album from Motorhead was a jack and coke, with a shot of tequila, jager and another shot of jack. The album rocks hard from beginning to end, and while we all want Lemmy to chill out a bit and curtail his favorite intake so he can be with us for as long as possible, this album from Motorhead continues the legacy of the band and the man who is a true rock original.

6. Tom Keifer - The Way Life Goes

A great solo offering from the Cinderella frontman that showed a wide range of influences and talents. Tom has always been a fantastic songwriter, with multiple memorable hits from his Cinderella days. That continues with 'The Way Life Goes,' and I hope we get more new solo material in the future from Tom, as well as new Cinderella music.

5. Pop Evil - Onyx

Michigan rockers Pop Evil continued their onslaught on the airwaves, with two songs from their latest album already going to #1 on the Active Rock charts. The second album from the band has firmly etched the guys as major players in rock, with the ability and talent to take it to an even bigger level.

4. Stone Sour - The House Of Gold & Bones Part 2

One of the most interesting rock projects of the year, with Corey Taylor raising Stone Sour's influence, even getting closer to the level of popularity of his other band Slipknot. This was the second of the two 'House Of Gold & Bones' albums, and spawned two singles that are in my Top 10 tracks of the year. Combine the two CD packaging and you get an actual cardboard model home, and add the whole comic book issues with that and you have a dynamic, multi-layed project that reached so many on so many levels.

3. Sound City - Real To Reel

A fantastic soundtrack album to Dave Grohl's 'Sound City' rockumentary, the project combined artists that have recorded legendary albums in the past at the iconic Sound City Studios, with an array of great artists that Grohl brought together as the Sound City Players. Two tracks from this album also are featured in my top tracks of the year. If you have yet to see the 'Sound City' movie, you owe it to yourself to check it out and enjoy!

2. Black Sabbath - 13

I was upset when first hearing that drummer Bill Ward wouldn't be a part of the Black Sabbath reunion tour and album, but with each listen, the album continues to get better and better to me. The project has been a huge success, with the album and tour both making Black Sabbath one of the rock stories of the year. I still am holding out hope that Ward will get to rejoin his bandmates for shows and recordings at some point (better be soon), but if that doesn't happen, will still have this crushing Sabbath album that kicked my ass.

1. The Winery Dogs - The Winery Dogs

This is by far my favorite release of 2013! Master musicianship from the power trio featuring guitarist and vocals from Richie Kotzen, bass from the amazing Billy Sheehan, and percussion by one of today's great drummers, Mike Portnoy. Great songs with great hooks, and a variety of sounds demonstrating three masters meshing in a way that maybe even they didn't think possible. A phenomenal album from a band that I hope continues to stay together and put out more fantastic music. While the band has played some shows in 2013 in the U.S., I'm hoping for more opportunities to see this material live and what they future holds for a band that deserves to be recognized by all rock fans of any genre.
