Wes Scantlin of Puddle Of Mudd talks to Marshall of Rock

Wes Scantlin of Puddle Of Mudd talks to Marshall of Rock

I had a chance to sit down and chat with Wes Scantlin of Puddle Of Mudd prior to their gig at The Ranch in San Miguel, California on October 24 and despite his past brushes with TMZ and his neighbor, he is nothing but positive when it come to making new music and getting back out on the road. Getting his "road legs" back under him as this was just the fifth gig on a tour that carries the band until right before Christmas, we chat about his hometown Kansas City Royals playing in the World Series, getting his start musically in K.C., how the band got their name, the Fred Durst connection, playing with Jimmy Page, the band's new single and upcoming album, Rachel Hunter, Elvis' pool, performing enhancing drugs, who's the biggest asshole in the music biz and more. Listen to it all below.

Puddle of Mudd recently released a surprise new single, “Piece of the Action” via iTunes. This is the first new music from the band since 2011, and dropped at the same time fall tour dates were announced. Get it here: and the band are also working through more than forty songs for a full-length album release next year, which Wes says will be titled 'Powerchord.'

Puddle of Mudd’s Wes Scantlin arrested for alledgedly becoming drunkeningly combative on flight

Puddle of Mudd singer Wes Scantlin was arrested today for allegedly becoming drunkenly combative with a flight attendant while on a flight in route to Los Angeles, according to A rep for the Austin PD told TMZ that Scantlin got into a verbal argument with a flight attendant over alcohol. It's not know exactly what provoked the argument, but a source with airport security said that Scantlin was upset because the flight crew wouldn't sell him any more booze.

The flight bound for L.A. was re-routed to Bergstrom International Airport in Austin for an emergency stop, where Scantlin was removed from the plane and then arrested and booked for public intoxication. In addition, he may face federal charges of interfering with a flight crew.

Scantlin has had a rough time of late, with a bad breakup of his marriage earlier this year and pleading "guilty" to felony cocaine possession in July. The judge in the cocaine possession case agreed to clear his record in 18 months as long as Scantlin obeyed all laws, which he may have just violated. We'll see how this plays out, but now there is a possibility that Scantlin could face prison time for the cocaine charge, as well as for public intoxication and interfering with a flight crew.

I saw Puddle of Mudd in concert this summer and I have to say it was the most disapointing show I have witnessed in quite some time. I will preface this statement once again stating that I am a fan of Puddle of Mudd's music and I wish Wes the best in his life battles, but he lip-synced and sang to track in the concert and it was just plain sad. He was nice to me and my family, but couldn't seem to put down his beer, and seemed to be under the influence of something other than alcohol. It looked to me that the music biz had beat him down pretty good and he was just hanging on by a thread. We wish you well Wes.

Drummer Chad Smith rejoined Chickenfoot onstage for the first time on the tour in support of their latest album, 'Chickenfoot III' on May 16th at Boston’s Orpheum Theatre. Kenny Aronoff has been handling the drumming chores due to Smith’s commitment with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Earlier in the set before Chad jammed with the band, Sammy Hagar made a passing reference to him, joking that, "if Chad was here, I’d kick his ass." After the band left the stage, a man in a Kiss t-shirt and backwards baseball cap sat down behind Aronoff’s drums. The fans then realized that it was Smith, and went nuts.

The band proceeded to jam on 'Oh Yeah’, after which Hagar turned to Smith and said, "Chad, you haven’t had this much fun all year and you know it." They then broke into a cover of Jimi Hendrix‘s 'Foxy Lady' with a bit of 'Manic Depression' thrown in. That was followed by 'Different Devil,' then a tribute to the late Ronnie Montrose with a cover of 'Rock Candy,' with Aronoff helping out on the cymbols.

Wes Scanlin of Puddle of Mudd files for divorce

Wes Scanlin of Puddle of Mudd files for divorce

Wes Scantlin of Puddle Of Mudd is reportedly divorcing his wife, Jessica Nicole Smith. The two were married in January of 2008, and TMZ reported that divorce papers were filed at the L.A. County Superior Court on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

There is no comment from Scanlin on the alleged divorce, but Smith has been the inspiration behind many of his songs.

Puddle of Mudd have a few more tour dates left on their current leg behind the ‘Re: (disc)overed’ album, a collection of covers of classic tunes from AC/DC to the Rolling Stones.

Puddle of Mudd were on the road when the papers were filed. It seems apparent the couple have been having problems before the tour, and it just all came to a head. We wish them both the best through this shitty time. Scanlin was already going through another split, as guitarist Paul Phillips announced on Nov. 13 that he was leaving the group and would not be joining Puddle of Mudd on their current run.

At least his wife wasn't named Anna Nicole.

Remaining Puddle of Mudd 2011 Fall Tour Dates:
12/9 — Peoria’s Expo Gardens – Peoria, Ill.
12/10 — Bogart’s — Cincinnati, Ohio
