Metallica News: watch preview of Lars Ulrich in new HBO film ‘Hemingway and Gellhorn’, New Orion Music + More Festival trailer and Mexico tour details
A second trailer for Metallica's upcoming Orion Music + More Festival has been released. It all happens June 23-24 at Bader Field in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Orion Music + More is Metallica’s first attempt at hosting their own multi-day festival event, with more than 30 artists on the bill. Metallica will headline both nights, playing the classic “Black” album in its entirety on one of the nights for the first time ever in the U.S., and performing the “Ride The Lightning” album on the other night.
The festival itself will have a diverse lineup, opening up the ears and minds of attendees, but will also rock hard on 'The Damage Inc. stage' with Suicidal Tendencies, Sepultura, Torche, Red Fang, Kyng, Landmine Marathon, Black Tuck and Thy Will Be Done.
The Orion Custom Car + Motorcycle Show, curated by James Hetfield, will include over 300 of the best Customs, Hot Rods, muscle cars and custom motorcycles on display inside the festival grounds throughout the weekend.
Metallica has announced that they will play two dates in Mexico City in early August. The band released a statement in regards to the shows:
After years in the making, we are beyond excited to finally unveil the all new, out of control, massive stage and Metalli-show to some of our most rabid fans in the world with two shows in Mexico City at Sports Palace on August 1 and 2, 2012.
When we last visited Mexico City in June of 2009, those three sold out nights with over 150,000 of our craziest friends at Foro Sol Stadium were some of the most memorable, over the top, insane shows we have ever played. Now we'll be back with a brand new show that features your favorite iconic elements spanning our entire 30 year touring career all on a massive stage that is twice the size of the World Magnetic set up... we think it's something that needs to be seen to believed!!!
Lars Ulrich has appeared on the big screen before, with acting roles as himself in 2010′s 'Get Him to the Greek' and as himself in Metallica’s 2004 documentary ‘Some Kind of Monster’, but he plays Dutch documentarian Joris Ivens in the new HBO film 'Hemingway and Gellhorn.'
'Hemingway and Gellhorn' also stars Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen. Kidman plays journalist Martha Gellhorn, a celebrated war correspondent and the third wife of Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen). The story trails their passionate, often rocky relationship during the Spanish Civil War and beyond.
Retelling the story of one of America's most famous literary couples, the movie begins in 1936 when the pair first met in a bar in Florida. He was already a famous writer and she was one of the greatest war correspondents of the 20th Century. Their five-year marriage first saw them travel to Spain to record some of the most famous reports on the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939. Gellhorn was the only woman to ask Hemingway for a divorce and she inspired him to write his novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls. The movie premieres on May 28, but you can check out a preview in a five minute trailer below.
After Metallica announced the initial lineup for their Orion Music + More festival, June 23 and 24 in Atlantic City, N.J., there was much talk about the lack of metal being represented. The reasoning was to present a 'diverse' lineup of music, exposing the audience to different bands and sounds they may not have heard before and having everyone accept all the different genres. That sounds good, but the people have spoken, as Metallica has announced a special Damage Inc. Stage that will feature some choice thrash and punk bands.
To be fair, the band did say there would be more bands announced, and among those scheduled to their own damage are Suicidal Tendencies, Sepultura, Torche, Red Fang, Kyng, Black Tusk and Thy Will Be Done.
Metallica will headline both nights of the festival and perform 'The Black Album' on June 23 and 'Ride the Lightning' in their entirety on June 24. The 'Black Album' recently turned 20, while 'Ride The Lightning' has never been aired in full.
Hungarian director Nimród Antal has been hired by Metallica to direct a 3D feature film project being described as a "marriage of narrative and concert." All the members of Metallica: James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo will participate in the project, with hopes for a mid-2013 release.
Los Angeles born Antal has previous directorial experience, with 2007's 'Vacancy,' co-starring Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson, and 2010's 'Predators,' starring Adrian Brody. Those movies reportedly grossed over $127 million worldwide. But, it was his first Hungarian film, the award-winning 'Kontroll,' is what caught the attention of Metallica. "I've been a fan of Nimróds since his first Hungarian film, Kontroll, showed up at Cannes in 2004 and blew everybody away," said Lars Ulrich. "I've watched with excitement his career in Hollywood blossom over the last few years. Within five minutes of meeting him I was addicted to his enthusiasm, his take on the creative process and his 'thinking outside of the box' personality. Let's get on with it!!!" The Metallica 3D movie will begin shooting in August and will be released in the summer of 2013.
Chickenfoot top the rock picks this week with the second release from the "Chickenfoot III" album. "Three And A Half Letters (I Need A Job)", speaks on the state of America's economy and it's impact on everyday people. People from all walks of life are facing hunger. Hagar reads heartbreaking letters from those downtrodden by the economy in the song, speaking softly and impacting with each word. At the end of the video, the link to www.feedingamerica.org is on-screen. Please help people in need if you can.

Sunset Strip legends Steel Panther will release their sophomore album 'Balls Out' November 1st on Universal Republic Records. The latest album features 14 soon to be classics such as "Just Like Tiger Woods," "Gold Digging Whore" and "Weenie Ride." The album also features cameos by Dane Cook on the album opener "In The Future" and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger and Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt show up on "It Won't Suck Itself." 'Balls Out' was produced by Grammy nominated producer/mixer Jay Ruston who also produced the band's 'Feel The Steel' debut and has worked with Anthrax, Meatloaf, The Donnas and Morrissey.
Lyrically Steel Panther are solid on this track, being the wordsmiths they are. Lyrics like "I banged 17 girls in a grocery store and never lost my erection", bring the deep truth and growth on this first track follow-up to "Feel The Steel."
Steel Panther continue their regular gigs at House Of Blues in Hollywood and Green Valley Ranch in Las Vegas. Steel Panther has been joined on stage by such rock and roll icons as Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Paul Stanley of KISS, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park and Green Day just to name a few. Across the Atlantic, the band has shared arena stages with ZZ Top and rocked an audience of 30,000 at the UK's Download festival. In Germany, 'Feel The Steel' was proclaimed 'Best Debut Album' at the Metal Hammer awards. The band will be heading out on a UK tour with Def Leppard and Motley Crue in December before coming back to start a nationwide tour of the US in 2012. Steel Panther's new single "17 Girls In A Row" is now available for download at iTunes and Amazon.com. After downloading, feel free to play it 17 times in a row because you fucking can!

Metal Masters Mastodon released their highly anticipated album "The Hunter" on Sept. 27. The album is available in a variety of formats, from single CD, to Deluxe Limited Edition Package. The first single "Curl Of The Burl" is doing really well for the Atlanta, Georgia band. I would label Mastodon as a modern Black Sabbath, although "Curl Of The Burl" has the sound of an Trouble track from back in the day. The video was directed by Robert Schober with the concept by Brann Dailor. The guy in the video is seriously trippin'. This is one big acid trip:
The official tracklisting for The Hunter is as follows:
'Curl Of The Burl'
'Octopus Has No Friends'

Soundgarden/ex-Audioslave singer Chris Cornell "The Keeper" is the lead single from the soundtrack to the upcoming movie "Machine Gun Preacher". The movie, which stars Gerard Butler as a former drug dealer who becomes a crusader for hundreds of refugee children in war-torn Sudan, opened on September 23. Apparently the song may be the best part of the movie, because reviews weren't glowing to say the least, and the movie looks to have a short run in theaters, despite it's postive message. You can purchase the "The Keeper" here. A portion of all sales will go directly towards Sam Childer's Angels of East Africa charity.
"Machine Gun Preacher" is the inspirational true story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds an unexpected calling as the savior of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children. Gerard Butler (300) delivers a searing performance as Childers, the impassioned founder of the Angels of East Africa rescue organization in Golden Globe-nominated director Marc Forster’s (Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland) moving story of violence and redemption.
Here's a great performance of the song on a recent "Late Show With David Letterman"
Cornell will release an album of live "Songbook" tour performances on November 21 via Universal Music Enterprises. It will feature Cornell's own songs as well as a few covers, and all fans who purchase their "Songbook" tour tickets online will receive a digital copy of the album with each order. Chris Cornell is also looking for a fan in each of 21 cities to photograph his upcoming US 'Songbook tour'. Submit your best photo and win a photo pass, tickets, and more! Do it by November 3rd here.

Black Tide's rocking track "That Fire" is up next. "Post Mortem", is the Miami, Florida band’s second album for DGC/Interscope. The band consists of Gabriel Garcia (Guitar, Vocals), Steven Spence (Drums), Austin Diaz (Guitar), and Zakk Sandler (Bass). Black Tide's sophomore offering has been in the making since October 2009. The band did the demo work at a studio in Kansas with producer Josh Wilbur (Lamb of God), then hit a New York studio with Wilbur and Garth Richardson (Rage Against the Machine, Mudvayne) in May 2010. The resulting album shows continued growth by the band in not only the song writing, but the performance on the tracks. Austin Diaz joined the band in 2008, but Post Mortem marks his first time writing with the band. He is classically trained with years of music school under his belt. According to the band, he has made a huge difference in their wrting and performing style now.
