After a long delay which precipitated the release of an iTunes only 4 song E.P., ZZ Top will release their new full-length album titled 'La Futura' on Sept. 11th through American Recordings.
The album is said to be a return to the trademark raw sound of the band’s formative years via the electric blues/roots approach that typified its earliest work, while looking forward at the same time. ZZ Top’s last new studio album, 'Mescalero,' came out in 2003.
ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons produced the album along with Rick Rubin. Gibbons said in a press release, "We thought long and hard about what this album should be. We wanted to recall the directness of our early stuff but not turn our backs on contemporary technology. The result of this melding of the past and the present is, of course, ‘La Futura.’"
The Spanish album title, meanwhile, maintains an early band tradition, manifested in previous albums including including 'Tres Hombres' (1973), 'Fandango!' (1975), 'El Loco' (1981) and 'Degüello' (1979).
The first four tracks from the new album: 'I Gotsta Get Paid,' 'Chartreuse,' 'Consumption' and 'Over You' were part of the digital 4 track release last month called 'Texicali.' 'I Gotsta Get Paid' was performed by the band in an prmotional ad for Jeremiah Weed bourbon and malt beverages, and was inspired by the 1990’s underground Houston rap song '25 Lighters' by DJ DMD with Lil' Keke and Fat Pat.
The track 'Flyin' High' was originally unveiled as a still unfinished track on the Soyuz spacecraft at the time of its launch 13 months ago. It was requested by NASA astronaut Mike Fossum, a long-time ZZ Top fan who was on board—and knew of the recording from a conversation with the band’s bassist/vocalist Dusty Hill. Another album cut, 'It’s Too Easy Mañana,' is a cover of a song by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.
ZZ Top, which is now in its 42nd year with the same line-up, are currently on a tour that will take them to Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Norway. The band will return to the U.S. for a North American tour that kicks off in Bakersfield, CA. on August 14th. Look for a special rare performance at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on September 11th.

Crosby, Stills and Nash to complete another album despite negative experience with producer Rick Rubin
Despite recent claims by Stephen Stills stating the Crosby, Stills & Nash won't be completing a new album after time spent in the studio with producer Rick Rubin, Graham Nash says it is going to happen. The experience with Rick Rubin was a negative, and according to Nash, Rubin is responsible for Crosby, Stills and Nash abandoning their last album.
Nash describes working with Rubin as "not a great experience," but he insists there will be a new album, despite bandmate Stephen Stills’ claims that they won’t.
Nash told Music Radar: 'Two things are happening. One, Stephen doesn’t know the big picture. Two, Stephen is very deaf. He may have misheard or he may have been answering the question he thought you asked. Crosby, Stills and Nash will do another record. We’re right in the middle of one, 'Songs We Wish We’d Written.'"
Nash says his band have recorded versions of 'Close Your Eyes,' 'Behind Blue Eyes' and 'Ruby Tuesday,' along with a few others, but doesn't know when the album will be completed. "We're on tour until October. It’s hard to get three people into the studio if they’re doing different things and have different schedules. So it comes off that Stephen thinks there’ll be no new recordings – which couldn’t be further from the truth."
Rubin was initially hired to work with the band on the project, but the band soon abandoned the idea and started again without him. Nash said: “After almost 50 years of making records, we think we know what we’re doing, so it’s very hard to tell Crosby, Stills and Nash what to do. You can suggest anything you want, but you can’t tell us what to do. First of all, he pissed off David Crosby. David said we wanted to do Blackbird and another Beatles song. Rick said, ‘There will only be one Beatles song.’ Crosby said, ‘There will only be one Beatles song if we decide there will only be one Beatles song.’ You know, like, ‘Who the fuck are you to tell me?’
“You can’t tell us what to do. Rick is a brilliant man – but we rubbed each other the wrong way. Where’s the heart? It wasn’t there. I mean, who the fuck is Rick Rubin? I know he’s sold millions of records, but who the fuck is he to tell Crosby, Stills and Nash what to do? Guide us, yes. Make suggestions, fantastic. ‘Try it this way,’ no problem. But don’t tell us what to do. You can’t.”
Other artists have had negative comments in regards to working with Rubuin, with ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons recently suggesting Rubin was responsible for delays to the release of their long-awaited next album, prompted the band to release a 4 song e.p. Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor last year stated he’d never work with the producer again in his life. Muse once thanked him for "teaching us how not to produce." Rubin currently is working with Black Sabbath, and will follow that to work with Metallica once again on their next album.

Guitar World Magazine has posted an exclusive excerpt from their recent interview with Eddie Van Halen. Check it out the below.
Guitar Word: The last time we talked, you said you weren’t sure if you wanted to make a new Van Halen album. What changed your mind?
EVH: I think I was pissed off at the time. I didn’t want to do something new because I felt that even if we did, the fans wouldn’t like it anyway. We just snapped back and realized that, hey, we’re doing this for us, too. This is what we do. We make music for a living. Like I’ve always said, if you like what you’re doing, you’re halfway there; if someone else likes it, that’s even better. If they don’t like it, at least you like it. Not to be selfish, but you kind of have to be.
Guitar Word: What got the ball rolling on this album?
EVH: Wolfgang’s enthusiasm. He was going, “Come on, come on!” We went up to 5150 and started jamming. It felt like a comfortable old pair of shoes. Working with Dave again was like we had never left each other. It was that comfortable. We’ve known each other since high school. When you have old friends, five or six years can go by when you don’t see each other, but you just pick up where you left off.
We started recording at the studio at my house with just Alex, Wolfgang and me. Basically it’s the same way we start any record. We went through our archives of stuff we had already written. Wolfgang picked out a bunch of tunes. She’s the Woman was the first one. We started jamming on songs like She’s the Woman and Bulletheadand reworked them.
Dave was onboard from the beginning. I was already recording and engineering demos of She’s the Woman, Bullethead and Let’s Get Rockin’, which is now Outta Space. I sent Pro Tools files of recordings over to Dave, who was working over at Henson Studios, where he likes to record, which got him totally excited. He said, “Let’s get going!”
Guitar Word: How did you choose John Shanks [Bon Jovi, Fleetwood Mac] to produce the album?
EVH: The most difficult part of the process was deciding whether or not we should use a producer and who we should use. We had a big list of producers. Ever since we did that interview together with Tony Iommi [for GW’s Anniversary 2010 issue], I’ve been in contact with Tony a lot. Sabbath is doing their reunion also, and they’re working with Rick Rubin. I don’t think Rick is the right producer for the kind of band that Van Halen is, but his name was in the hat.
So was Pat Leonard [Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Madonna]. Dave doesn’t have a home studio, so he goes down to Henson to record, write and keep his voice in shape. One day he told me that he ran into this guy named John Shanks. I thought he was an odd choice, but we were open to anything. John asked what we had. I played him our three demos, and he loved them.
It was actually Wolf’s idea for the album to be a collection of our B-sides along with three reworked songs, which would be new to our audience. Instead of the "Best Of" it would be the B’s Of” — you know, songs like Drop Dead Legs, Girl Gone Bad… It would be a record of our more hardcore songs and none of the pop stuff. That was the initial plan for this album, but the deeper we dug, the more we found. At the same time I was writing new songs.
Dave got very excited about that. We all did. We ended up recording demos for 35 songs. All of those songs were ready to go, and we were able to play them all. We called John again and asked, “Are you busy? Do you want to come up and take a listen?” He was like, “Whoa! You’ve got a shitload of songs here!” We pretty much left it to John and Wolfgang to pick the songs, and it all went from there.
For the new album, Wolfgang pulled out some songs from the band’s past, which is something the group had done for previous records. For example, on Fair Warning, the band was still drawing on material like Mean Street/Voodoo Queen, which were from the demos you recorded before the first album came out. We were doing things like that even later.
Seventh Seal [from Balance] is a song that I wrote before Van Halen was even a band. Hang ’Em High [from Diver Down] was written long before we put it on an album. Same with House of Pain [from 1984], which was also on the demos we recorded in 1976 with Gene Simmons.
We approached this record no different than any other. The internet has changed everything. Now everyone knows where things came from. Before the internet nobody would have known that these were songs that we had already written but never released. When the album first came out, some people were saying that we purposely did old songs to get the public to relate to our old sound. But this record wasn’t planned that way. Whenever we make a record the first thing we do is go over what we already have in the bag that we can pick from, and then we focus on writing new material.
When we were digging around, I was amazed how fresh some of the songs sounded. I was going, “Did I really write that way back then?” The biggest trip is that I wrote some of those songs when I was still in high school and even junior high. A good idea is a good idea no matter when you do it.

A video called '50 Rides On The Love Train,' which is 50 completely different versions of DLR singing 'Love Train' accompanied with video of him dancing at various places has been posted. In a David lee Roth scrapbook video, in the beginning it mentions that he warms up to 'Love Train' (originally by The O'Jays in 1972). Sometimes when he’s warming up they actually record him singing along with 'Love Train'. It is entertaining but you may have to view it over time, since it is almost 2 1/2 hours long and you can only handle so much of the Love Train at any one time.
Guitarist Kerry King of Slayer is currently on the Mayhem tour, the band's first nationwide tour since 2010. He talked with Rolling Stone about the upcoming plans for Slayer, new muisc and the status of guitarist Jeff Hanneman.

Before leaving for the Mayhem Festival last weekend, Slayer finished two songs that now await mixing, began two others that still need leads and vocals, and demoed two more with producer Greg Fidelman, who worked with them on 2009's World Painted Blood and is currently working with Rick Rubin and Metallica. Guitarist Kerry King hopes to get back to work as soon as Mayhem ends August 5th in Hartford, Connecticut.
"If I get off my ass and start writing again on the road – since we've been in Europe, I keep trying to work on lyric ideas, maybe some leads, and fixing songs that didn't work correctly – it should be a real quick process," King told Rolling Stone, backstage at Mayhem's opening day in San Bernardino.
So far, the band has been working without guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who is still recovering from a devastating attack of flesh-eating necrotizing fasciitis on his right arm, believed to be caused by a spider bite. At last year's Big 4 Festival in Indio, California, Hanneman joined the band onstage for a two song encore, but he hasn't been able to tour.
"He's rehearsed with us a number of times. He tried to do the Fun Fun Fun Fest [in Austin]," King said. "That's the last time he tried to get out and do a show, and he's just not there. It's no secret we're very intricate, especially rhythmically. But he can't do that yet."
Other than two domestic Big 4 dates and the current Mayhem tour, Slayer have performed only a handful of U.S. shows since Hanneman was sidelined. Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has been the main substitute since Hanneman's illness. "Gary's a fucking badass," said King.
Hanneman wasn't at the recent recording sessions. But King explained that he typically records all the basic guitar parts himself anyway, even on songs written by Hanneman, before bringing the other guitarist in to perform his leads. "I do a lot of the bass, too," said King. It's still unknown if Hanneman will be able to return in time to perform solos on the new Slayer album.
After Mayhem we'll reevaluate and see if he's any closer," King says. "We're planning for him to come back and the door is open, because it's his fucking gig. If he can play, Jeff Hanneman is going to fucking be here, and I'm stoked about that. I love playing with Gary, and he's doing a killer job, but if Jeff came back and said 'I'm ready,' I'll check him out to see that he's ready, and off we go."
Rock Picks of the Week Ketchup: Aerosmith, ZZ Top, L.A. Guns, The Offspring, Charm City Devils, Dead Sara
Here I am, still playing ketchup on my rock picks of the week, with Aerosmith kicking things off with their number one rock track 'Legendary Child.' The song was originally written and recorded in 1991 during the early sessions for the group's 1993 album 'Get A Grip' but had remained unreleased. I really like the new track, but it didn't hit me as hard as I hoped by the buildup to its release. It is a quality cut, but one that I think could have been taken to an even more rocking level. I know it is a radio track however, and must play to the masses as it toes the line between long time fans and a new generation being exposed to Aerosmith.
The group's upcoming studio effort, 'Music from Another Dimension!' was originaly scheduled for an August 28th release, but has now been pushed back to November 6th. Steven Tyler said of the delay, "Too many [other notable acts] are releasing [their new albums] those weeks. We don't wanna step on their release dates. So we said, 'You know what?! We've got the goods…ain't no doubt about it. We'll wait another couple of months.'"
Aerosmith's North American leg of the band's 'Global Warming' Tour with Cheap Trick is well underway having kicked off a couple of weeks ago in Minneapolis. Bass player Tom Hamilton recently told Billboard that fans attending the shows likely will get treated to a preview of the new album. "It's gonna be, like, a 14-song album, so it's got a lot of range. I think it just kind of reflects all the eras of our career, everything we've learned over the centuries -- the 70s era, just all-out riff rock songs, and then the later stuff that's more melodic, ballady stuff so that we can have girls in our audience. It's all there."
Hamilton reveals that while the initial plan was for Aerosmith not to perform any new tunes save for lead single "Legendary Child" on the trek, he says, "We're probably going to say 'To hell with it' and play 'em because they're fun. We're chomping at the bit to play a bunch of these live," while noting that having new material to introduce in concert "really makes you feel like you're walking out there with a loaded weapon."
Hamilton also shared some details about the upcoming album: "I think it just kind of reflects all the eras of our career, everything we've learned over the centuries," he maintains. "The 70s era, just all-out riff rock songs, and then the later stuff that's more melodic, ballady stuff so that we can have girls in our audience."
Hamilton says 'Music from Another Dimension!' will include "songs that have been written over the course of our lifetimes," as well as a rendition of the vintage R&B number 'Shakey Ground,' which was a 1975 hit for the Temptations though Aerosmith based its version on Etta James' rendition. "We needed extra songs for Japan and Europe," Hamilton said, "and we thought, 'OK, we're struggling to get all our own songs written. Maybe we should cover a couple of songs.' I forget who brought ('Shakey Ground') in, and we tried it out and in the course of recording we just had so much fun with it that we wanted to put it on the album. We like to show off our funk roots and show we can get people's butts shaking."

Texas rock legends ZZ Top are back with their first new studio recordings in nine years, as the group have recently released the four-track teaser digital E.P. The four-song EP features all new tunes, and was produced by Rick Rubin, who also helmed the sessions for the band's as-yet-untitled new album, which is due out in late summer/early fall. 'Texicali' is available at itunes and all digital retail outlets. ZZ Top just wrapped up their 'Gang of Outlaws' tour with 3 Doors Down and Gretchen Wilson on June 29th, and are now will play gigs in Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Norway for during July. The band returns to the U.S. for headlining dates starting August 14th at Bakersfield's Fox Theater, followed by co-headlining dates later this summer with Lynyrd Skynryd.

Baltimore, Maryland's Charm City Devils are up next with a cover of a track that is a rocking version of a traditional American folk song first recorded by Dick Burnett, a partially blind fiddler from Kentucky. It became well-known in the 2000 film 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?,' with that version by The Soggy Bottom Boys. 'Man Of Constant Sorrow'
Charm City Devils were originally formed in 2007 by singer/song writer and former SR-71 drummer John Allen. Besides Allen the band includes Anthony Arambula (bass), Jason Hesier (Drums), Victor Karrera (Guitar) and Nick Kay (Guitar). After signing with Eleven Seven Music, Mötley Crüe bassist and Eleven Seven Music chairman, Nikki Sixx, suggested the band's current name Charm City Devils. Their debut album 'Let's Rock-N-Roll' was released in 2009, and two singles from it, 'Let's Rock n' Roll (Endless Road)' and 'Best of the Worst' garnered airplay around the country. They were named best new rock band by iTunes for 2009. Now, the band will release their sophomore album "Sins" on new label Fat Lady Music this July 31st. While working on the new album, Charm City Devils were discussing classic songs and if they should incorporate something into their set. Frontman John Allen explains, "There were many ideas kicked around, but which one? 'Man of Constant Sorrow' came up and we decided to give it a try. It’s an incredibly powerful song, but it was a challenge to develop and arrange it in a way that captured the essence of the song but would also ROCK! We all loved the version from 'O Brother Where Art Thou?' Skidd and I built a foundation and with much tweaking and editing, and I think we delivered a great version of the song. The song transcends generations. It’s a timeless classic and it’s been around a long time. I’m excited to bring it to a whole new group of rock fans."

Los Angeles' own Dead Sara's are up next with their track 'Weatherman.' Fronted by singer Emily Armstrong and guitarist Siouxsie Medley, the band are carrying the torch for female fronted rock bands, which we need more of. The ladies have garnered praise from female rock legends including Jefferson Airplane singer Grace Slick, who was recently asked by the Wall Street Journal which female rock singers she admired, Slick namechecked Armstrong, citing her "strong, urgent sound."
Rounded out by also bassist Chris Null and drummer Sean Friday, Dead Sara are rocking on the Vans Warped tour through August 5th in Portland, Oregon. They are also slated to perform on the main stage at this years Sunset Strip Music Festival in Hollywood, CA. on August 13th. The festival honors Sunset Strip legends The Doors, so there is a possibility we will see Dead Sara covering a song from the L.A. rock legends.
