Softcover edition of ‘108 Rock Star Guitars’ book to be available November 11

Hal Leonard Books will release a softcover edition of '108 Rock Star Guitars' by photographer/author Lisa S. Johnson on November 11. This exquisite book, originally issued as an embossed, red leatherette-bound hardcover in limited quantity that USA Today called, “…a monster of a coffee table book…” will now be available to a much wider audience at a more affordable retail price of $54.

Hailed as “impressive,” “jaw-dropping,” “masterpiece” and “elegant” by media and artists alike when it was released in October 2013, 108 Rock Star Guitars received widespread accolades for its overall design and the artistry of the images—up-close portraits of the cherished guitars belonging to some of the world’s most iconic players. American Photo magazine named it one of the “Best Photo Books of the Year” for 2013, while Brian Setzer called it, “The classiest guitar book I have ever seen.”

Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck, Nancy Wilson, Bonnie Raitt, Slash, Dave Mustaine, Phil Collen, Carlos Santana, Jack White, Ronnie Wood, Lou Reed, Ace Frehley, Billy Gibbons, Don Felder, Joe Walsh, Robby Krieger, Willie Nelson, Johnny Winter, and Les Paul, who also wrote the foreword, are among the rock stars whose instruments are featured.

The softcover, with French flaps, includes many of the same features of the original book in a slightly smaller size (9×10.5”): 396 pages, 486 gorgeous color images, reproduced using a six-color printing process, on high quality paper, and cover art that replicates the hardcover’s award-winning design.

“I am thrilled that Hal Leonard, with its global distribution channels, will publish the softcover edition of 108 Rock Star Guitars,” Johnson commented. “Even at a lower price, it was essential that this version maintained the style and beautiful quality of the hardcover edition, and I think anyone who sees this book will appreciate the care and detail that went into the new presentation.”

In 108 Rock Star Guitars, Johnson’s extreme close-up images capture the intimate details of her six-string subjects in a fresh and distinctive way revealing the beauty and art in these magnificent instruments, and giving insight into the personality of the musicians who play them. Additionally, she provides personal anecdotes describing her 17-year quest to photograph these guitars and documents her travels from the backstage hallways of some of the world’s most famous venues to the artists’ private homes.

A portion of the proceeds from sales of the softcover edition will benefit the Les Paul Foundation, which supports music education, engineering and innovation as well as medical research. Pre-order now at

Lisa S. Johnson grew up in an artistic family, where she fell in love with melody and imagery and pursued a career in photography. After a successful 10-year stint working at Eastman Kodak, she met the owner of a vintage guitar shop in Memphis, Tenn., and began exclusively photographing guitars. She lives in Las Vegas.

Les Paul was a guitar player, inventor, and recording artist, and an innovator throughout his career. In 1941, he built his first solid-body electric, helping shepherd into existence rock music as we know it. A pioneer whose name graces some of the most beloved six-strings ever manufactured, Paul died in Mahwah, N.J., where he had spent much of his life, in 2009 at the age of 94.

The mission of the Les Paul Foundation is to honor and share the life, spirit, and legacy of Les Paul by supporting music education, engineering and innovation as well as medical research. The foundation awards grants to music, music engineering and sound programs that serve youth, establishes music-related scholarships at schools and programs for students, provides grants for medical research and programs related to hearing impairment, and supports public exhibits displaying Les Paul’s life achievements.

The Doors to release ‘Live At The Bowl ’68’ featuring previously unreleased tracks on October 23rd

The Doors will be releasing a restored edition of their legendary performance at the Hollywood Bowl on October 23rd, and for the first time the entire show will be available. 'The Doors - Live at the Bowl '68' will not only be released on DVD and Blu-Ray, but on CD and double-vinyl.

The Doors supplied plenty of post-Independence Day fireworks on July 5, 1968 when the legendary quartet played the Hollywood Bowl, a concert that is considered to be the band’s finest on film. For the first time, the film from the historic performance has been painstakingly restored using the original camera negatives and the audio has been remixed and mastered from original multi-tracks by the group’s engineer Bruce Botnick. This new restoration offers a stunning visual upgrade from earlier versions and will give fans the closest experience to being there live along side Jim Morrison, John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, who opined, “You can hear it as if you were at the Hollywood Bowl, on stage with us.”

LIVE AT THE BOWL ’68 will include three previously unreleased tracks from the performance. Technical issues with the recording of “Hello, I Love You,” “The WASP (Texas Radio And The Big Beat),” and “Spanish Caravan” prevented them from being released in the past. Now, through meticulous restoration of the audio, all three will be included, marking the first time the concert has been available in its entirety.

You can pre-order any of the configurations here:

‘Songs Of The Century: An All-Star Tribute To Supertramp’ to be released August 14th

by on Aug.04, 2012, under CD/DVD RELEASES, LINKS, ROCK NEWS

‘Songs Of The Century: An All-Star Tribute To Supertramp’ to be released August 14th

Some of the biggest names in rock contribute to a very special collection being released by Cleopatra Records on August 14th, 'Songs Of The Century: An All-Star Tribute To Supertramp.' The record features members of Asia, Yes, King Crimson, The Doors, Deep Purple, XTC, Toto, Mr. Mister, Dream Theater, Nektar, Porcupine Tree, Gentle Giant, Renaissance, and Rainbow.

Supertramp formed in 1970 in the U.K. While initially considered a progressive rock outfit, the incredible songwriting of Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies, coupled with Hodgson’s unmistakable voice, moved the group into the pop and rock stratosphere by the 1980's. They amazingly straddled the line between expansive prog and commercial radio with unforgettable melodies, sing-along lyrics, a wizard-like Wurlizer, and the accent of the saxophone. They sold more than 60 million records, and hit singles from 'Crime of the Century,' 'Even In the Quietest Moments,' and 'Breakfast In America' are still played on radio stations, used in advertising, and etched in minds.

The recognizable and beloved Supertramp hit songs are reenvisioned on 'Songs Of The Century,' including 'The Logical Song,' 'Take The Long Way Home,' and 'Goodbye Stranger,' plus takes on gems like 'Rudy' and 'It’s Raining Again.' Producer Billy Sherwood enthuses, “There are some cool, unique moments like Annie Haslam singing “Dreamer” and one of the other highlights for me is Rick Wakeman’s piano playing on “Crime of the Century.” And Joe Lynn Turner singing “Bloody Well Right” is just killer.”” Richard Page offers a delightful version of “Give A Little Bit” that exudes all the sweet charm of the original. The bonus track is a new piece from Chris Squire and Tony Kaye of Yes.

The studio guest list also included John Wetton, Tony Levin, Robby Krieger, Colin Moulding, Steve Morse, Steve Porcaro, Roye Albrighton, Peter Banks, David Sancious, Gary Green, John Wesley, Geoff Downes, Jordan Rudess, Rod Argent, Mickey Thomas and more.

Explains Brian Perera, President of Cleopatra Records, “Supertramp is pretty inactive, and there’s a fan base out there that is just hungry for more Supertramp, and nobody can give it to them.”

Sherwood (the producer of the groundbreaking Pink Floyd tribute albums 'Back Against The Wall' and 'Return To The Dark Side Of The Moon,' as well as supergroup The Prog Collective) was very pleased to be asked to oversee the task of celebrating Supertramp. He says, “Supertramp is a great band. They’ve written so many hits that you can’t even count them all. “

Track List:
1. Breakfast In America - John Wetton (Asia) & Larry Fast (Peter Gabriel)
2. Take The Long Way Home - John Wesley (Porcupine Tree)
3. The Logical Song - Mickey Thomas (Starship), Steve Morse (Deep Purple) & Tony Kaye (Yes)
4. Give A Little Bit - Richard Page (Mr. Mister) & Peter Banks (Yes)
5. It's Raining Again - Colin Moulding (XTC) & Geoff Downes (Yes/Asia)
6. Crime Of The Century - Billy Sherwood (Yes), Rick Wakeman (Yes) & Tony Levin (King Crimson)

The Doors News: Sunset Strip Festival Honorees, Ray Manzarek to release ‘The Piano Poems: Live from San Franciso’ with poet Michael McLure

The Doors are not only rock legends, they are legends of Los Angeles' Sunset Strip, and this year the band will be honored as such during the fifth annual Sunset Strip Music Festival, scheduled for August 16-18. The band will be celebrated with a variety of performances and events.

The festival will launch on August 16th with a star-studded band playing Doors music, as well as Peter Murphy and Jack Russell's Great White, Faster Pussycat, Pretty Boy Floyd and Bulletboys. The festival wraps up on the 18th with a daylong outdoor street fest highlighted by performances by a rocking selection of artists. Marilyn Manson will headline the finale, which also will feature sets by The Offspring, Black Label Society, Bad Religion, Dead Sara and more. The acts are expected to play Doors tunes during their performances. The major clubs located along the Strip, including the Whisky A Go-Go, Roxy Theatre and Key Club will also be showcasing a variety of bands throughout the festival.

Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek commented on the honor: "What a great time we're going to have! The Sunset Strip. Live bands, loud music, rock and roll. It's the '60s all over again, and everyone is welcome."

Guitarist Robby Krieger added, "It's a thrill to be honored by The Sunset Strip Music Festival this year. Venice was our home, but The Doors lived and came of age on the Sunset Strip. It's exciting to see that the legacy we helped create is still alive and thriving today!"

And John Densmore said, "The Sunset Strip in the '60s was the incubation canal for an entire renaissance in music, and its impact is still with us. The Doors are proud to be honored this year."

A percentage of the festival proceeds will benefit the Impact Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center in Pasadena, California. For more info on the festival and how to get tickets go to:

A new live album featuring Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek performing alongside Beat-era poet Michael McLure cxalled 'The Piano Poems: Live from San Francisco' is scheduled for an August 14th release.

In a statement about the album, McLure explains that it was recorded "on a cold, foggy night…after a great Japanese meal." He adds about the performance, "The stage was on fire with poems and piano improvisations. The symbiosis and the synergy made lights." The album also features jazz flutist Larry Kassin on select tracks.

Other collaborative live recordings Manzarek and McLure have released include 1993's Love Lion and 2001's There's a Word!
