Metallica News: Watch Rock AM Ring Festival in Germany via free stream this weekend, ‘Birth School Metallica Death: Volume I’ autobiogaphy due in 2013, band member biopics

Metallica will be headlining the annual Rock AM Ring Festival in Nurburgring, Germany this Saturday, June 2, and you can watch it live via a free live stream. The band will be performing their 1991 self-titled album, known as 'The Black Album,' in its entirety. The twenty year old album features such classic tracks such as 'Enter Sandman,' 'Sad But True,' 'Nothing Else Matters' and 'The Unforgiven.'

The live concert stream will start at 3PM ET/12 PT this Saturday, June 2nd. Check it all out here: www.orionmusicandmore.com/rock-am-ring-livestream. Metallica will also be performing 'The Black Album' in it's entirety along with ‘Ride The Lightning’ at their inaugural Orion Music + More Festival in Atlantic City,  N.J., on June 23rd & 24th.

Da Capo Press has announced a forthcoming two-volume biography of Metallica. 'Birth School Metallica Death: Volume I ' is slated for release in the fall of 2013, with the companion following a year later.

"Metallica's story is an epic narrative finally getting the same multi-book treatment as Elvis Presley, Charles Darwin, and several former Presidents," said editor Ben Schafer.

Authors Paul Brannigan and Ian Winwood have reportedly based the books on more than 75 hours of interviews. They hung with the rockers in their natural habitat, compiling information for what figures to be a comprehensive look at the enduring metal outfit's long and storied career.

The first volume will chart the band's early years and end circa the 1988 album ...And Justice for All, their commercial breakthrough. The second installment tells the remainder of the story -- a period that, though not without its triumphs, includes the group's divisive latter-day records, drummer Lars Ulrich's battle with Napster and of course, the icky inter-band squabbling documented in the 2004 film "Some Kind of Monster."

Danish-born Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich plays Dutch documentarian Joris Ivens in the new HBO biopic 'Hemingway & Gelhorn,' which made it's TV debut Monday night (May 28). The movie has numerous airing upcoming, so check your listings.

Joris Ivens work chronicling the Spanish Civil War lured Ernest Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn to the Iberian Peninsula in the late 1930's. Hemingway and Gellhorn are played by Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman in the biopic. Here's a recent USA Today article for more of Ulrich talking his latest movie role: www.usatoday.com

Another member of Metallica is involved in his own biopic. This from USA Today on May 24: If it sounds strange that a metal master is financing a movie about a jazz virtuoso, there's a thing or two you need to learn about Metallica's Robert Trujillo and the late bass ace Jaco Pastorius.

"Jaco was my hero growing up. Hearing him was like hearing Eddie Van Halen doing Eruption for the first time: You thought, 'What instrument is that?' " Trujillo says.

"I loved jazz fusion and branched out from there," he says. "But Jaco had an edge that far exceeded his jazz persona. He was funk, he was rock, he was soul. And his whole attitude was punk."

Tentatively titled Jaco, the documentary Trujillo took on two years ago is being directed by Stephen Kijak, who helmed 2010's Stones in Exile, about the Rolling Stones' creation of Exile on Main Street. Trujillo says he hopes to premiere the movie at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

"The film for me is from the heart," says Trujillo, who met his hero only once and had hoped to help Pastorius as he battled mental illness. "I wanted to rescue him, but I learned that Jaco didn't want to be rescued."

Pastorius died in 1987 from a beating suffered in a Florida bar's alley. He was bipolar and had wrestled with substance abuse. Although only 35 when he died, Pastorius already had revolutionized the electric bass with searing multi-note fusillades and delicate chord-based harmonics.

"Jaco was the Babe Ruth of the bass," says his biographer, Bill Milkowski. "His is an unbelievably fascinating story."

Befriending Pastorius' family, Trujillo obtained never-seen footage. And Pastorius' revered status among musicians "made it easy to get Sting, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, (Carlos) Santana and (director) Mike Figgis to comment on his influence," Trujillo says.

So what made Pastorius so great? "Well, there's just sheer genius, of course," Trujillo says, shrugging. "But frankly, maybe his being bipolar helped him push past boundaries that are there for the rest of us. Because Jaco was nothing if not fearless."

Metallica News: More acts added to Orion Festival, Director Nimrod Antal hired for 3D movie

Metallica News: More acts added to Orion Festival, Director Nimrod Antal hired for 3D movie

After Metallica announced the initial lineup for their Orion Music + More festival, June 23 and 24 in Atlantic City, N.J., there was much talk about the lack of metal being represented. The reasoning was to present a 'diverse' lineup of music, exposing the audience to different bands and sounds they may not have heard before and having everyone accept all the different genres. That sounds good, but the people have spoken, as Metallica has announced a special Damage Inc. Stage that will feature some choice thrash and punk bands.

To be fair, the band did say there would be more bands announced, and among those scheduled to their own damage are Suicidal Tendencies, Sepultura, Torche, Red Fang, Kyng, Black Tusk and Thy Will Be Done.

Metallica will headline both nights of the festival and perform 'The Black Album' on June 23 and 'Ride the Lightning' in their entirety on June 24. The 'Black Album' recently turned 20, while 'Ride The Lightning' has never been aired in full.

Hungarian director Nimród Antal has been hired by Metallica to direct a 3D feature film project being described as a "marriage of narrative and concert." All the members of Metallica: James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo will participate in the project, with hopes for a mid-2013 release.

Los Angeles born Antal has previous directorial experience, with 2007's 'Vacancy,' co-starring Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson, and 2010's 'Predators,' starring Adrian Brody. Those movies reportedly grossed over $127 million worldwide. But, it was his first Hungarian film, the award-winning 'Kontroll,' is what caught the attention of Metallica. "I've been a fan of Nimróds since his first Hungarian film, Kontroll, showed up at Cannes in 2004 and blew everybody away," said Lars Ulrich. "I've watched with excitement his career in Hollywood blossom over the last few years. Within five minutes of meeting him I was addicted to his enthusiasm, his take on the creative process and his 'thinking outside of the box' personality. Let's get on with it!!!" The Metallica 3D movie will begin shooting in August and will be released in the summer of 2013.

Metallica News: ‘Obey Your Master’ Art Exhibit opens, Hulk Hogan says he almost joined Metallica

Metallica News: ‘Obey Your Master’ Art Exhibit opens, Hulk Hogan says he almost joined Metallica

An art exhibition honoring Metallica called 'Obey Your Master,' has opened in Los Angeles.  The exhibition features pieces inspired by Metallica’s work, with some great artists interpreting various songs from the band in a unique fashion. Slipknot‘s percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, Black Veil Brides lead vocalist Andy Biersack and Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo along with his wife Chloe also showed their work at the art exhibit.

The concept of the special exhibit is having the artists choose a song by Metallica and allow their artistic sides express their vision of the tune, based on the lyrics and music.

“As a kid in Exodus, I just wanted to be able to play guitar well and that’s all I fucking wanted to do,” Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett told Alternative Press at the event. “And to see your musical vision turn into something else, a totally different sort of vision — it’s amazing, it’s astounding. It’s incredible to see what people’s vision of the music has become. It’s so fucking amazing. It’s really interesting to see how differently people interpret the music. I mean, I can’t believe how farfetched a lot of this stuff really is!"

"I have my concept of what the music means to me in a visual aspect. But to really see how other people interpret it and how other people are visualizing it is mind-blowing, bro. Totally, completely, mind-blowing. I’m so fucking overwhelmed right now!” Hammett said, looking around. “I am so completely overwhelmed. . . It’s interesting to see where the music has taken them, where it’s led them, and how they’ve gotten other bits of meaning out of it. I mean, it’s profound. It’s fucking profound!”

The exhibit opened to the public on January 23rd and will run through March 23rd. For more information and some great photos check out www.exhibitagallery.com and www.metallica.com.

Former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan says he was once invited by Lars Ulrich to bring Hulk-a-mania to Metallica, but it "didn't work out".

Hogan told UK tabloid The Sun, "I used to be a session musician before I was a wrestler. I played bass guitar. I was big pals with Lars Ulrich and he asked me if I wanted to play bass with Metallica in their early days but it didn't work out."

I had no previous knowledge of this, but Hogan did tell the Chicago Tribune back in 2009: "I was in England presenting an award with Jerry Hall, Mick Jagger's ex, and she told me The (Rolling) Stones were looking for a bass player," Hogan said. "I sent her a ton of merchandise that she asked for and said 'Tell Mick I'm a great bass player.' I never heard a word back.

"When Metallica was looking for a bass player, I called and never heard a word back from them either. I would have quit wrestling in a heartbeat to be a bass player for Metallica."
