Three Days Grace vocalist leaves group, My Darkest Days Matt Walst to join his brother in 3DG for upcoming tour, as his band deals with their own departure
Three Days Grace have announced that vocalist Adam Gontier has resigned from the band just weeks prior to their upcoming co-headlining tour with Shinedown. Coming off a number one rock track with 'Chalk Outline', and as one of the rock radio's most successful bands over the past decade, it truly is a shocker. Matt Walst, lead singer of My Darkest Days, will be joining the band as the lead singer for their North American co-headlining tour with Shinedown, starting in Moline, Illinois on February 1st. Walst's will join his brother Brad, who plays bass for Three Days Grace.
Brad Walst said in a press release, "We were surprised and distressed by Adam’s sudden departure. We are however very excited for this upcoming tour and to have my brother Matt stepping in as lead singer."
Three Days Grace released the following statement yesterday (Jan. 9):
"We appreciate everyone’s concern about Three Days Grace. We found out on December 21st that Adam wished to resign from the band. In a letter to us Adam indicated that he was resigning from the band due to a non life threatening health issue and wanted the band to continue moving forward without him. We were as shocked as many of you were to hear the news. Three Days Grace has always been and will continue to be not only our job but our passion. Instead of cancelling the tour, we felt an obligation to you, the fans, to forge ahead and put on the best show we can. Brad recently reached out to his brother Matt Walst, lead singer for ‘My Darkest Days’ to fill in for the tour dates already announced. We’ve been hanging out and rehearsing with Matt and look forward to rocking the stage in a few weeks! As of right now, Matt’s role is temporary and as far as the future and beyond this tour, we are taking it one day at a time. – 3DG"
Adam Gontier released his own statement on his departure: " To all of my fans, my friends, my family, these are my words coming from my heart, separate from my role as “lead singer of Three Days Grace”.
I want you all to know how very thankful I am for your consistent love, your respect, and you’re undying support. It is important for me to address any concerns regarding my health being connected to drugs or addiction. The truth is, when I was struggling during that dark time in my life, I hit rock bottom, and I had the kindest of people reach out from all over the world, and reach their hands out to help pick me up. I am so blessed to be walking in the light now. I am reminded of your loyalty, always. The truth is, and I’m very proud to say this…, I am sober. That chapter in my life is over.
There have been many defining moments in my life. My time as part of Three Days Grace is most definitely one of the miraculous ones. I have had so many tender hearted people share with me their stories. How I’ve touched, or changed their lives. My truth is that all of the love I have received has forever changed my life. Each letter I’ve read, every picture I’ve been sent, all of the voices I’ve heard sing along with me, I will forever remember, and never forget…
After twenty years of being part of an ever evolving band, I have been inspired by life, to move on and to continue to evolve on my own terms. I could not be more grateful for all the souls who have travelled along with me. A journey I look back on with integrity, and a future I look forward to with such hope. I have always admired brave hearts. Life is always changing. I will continue to follow my heart, and what I love to do. I’m not sure what the next horizon will look like, but I do have all the faith in the world that whatever it is, It’s meant to be, and I have faith that blessings will continue to shine over all of us. I once heard a “brave heart” say:
“When nothing is sure, everything is possible.”
It’s because of my life’s journey, because of all of you, that I believe.
Sincerely, with love,
Matt Walst released this statement:
"It has been a very emotional week for myself and the members of My Darkest Days. With the departure of Sal from the band I have to say that it has felt like I have been on a rollercoaster and I am not sure where the end is. When you are on the road with some one for the length of time that we were, you form a bond just like any other relationship and when one person walks away it is only natural to feel a wide range of things from sadness to anger. That being said please know that Sal chose to leave My Darkest Days and although we are disappointed we wish him the best of luck in his new life and his new endeavors.
With every down there is an up! I am very excited to have the opportunity to share the stage with my brother Brad and the rest of the members of Three Days Grace on their Transit of Venus Tour. As most of you are, I was just as shocked as you to find out about Adam's departure from 3DG. When asked, I was unsure at first as Adam, Brad, Neil and Barry have all been such huge influences on my life musically and personally. After some thought and a few sleepless nights I accepted. It has always been a childhood dream to share the stage with my brother and I get that opportunity on this upcoming tour. Adam is an amazing Singer, Performer and Role-model and all I can do is try and fill some enormous shoes. I wish him well in his recovery and hope to see him grace the stage again soon.
With all that has gone on this week I want to assure everyone that My Darkest Days is stronger then ever! My bandmates are very excited for me and I have their full support. We have completed some songs that we are very excited about and my brothers, Brendo, Dougie and lil Reidy will continue to write with me while I am on tour. We are looking forward to putting out our third album and hope you are as excited about it as we are!
Last but most important of all I want to thank all of you who have supported My Darkest Days in the past and continue to support us in the future. For those that have been there from the beginning and have stuck by us we thank you with all our hearts. For those who have just joined us we thank you. For those about to rock, we salute you!
My Darkest Days are dealing with a band departure of their own, as it was recently announced that guitarist Sal Costa has left the band. He actually left back in October, but the decision to announce his departure was put on hold until everyone felt they were ready to proceed.
The mohawked Costa said: “Leaving a band isn’t easy. There are relationships from both the band, fans and people who work for you that you have to give an explanation to. I really wanted to sort out everything before any public announcements were made. When I think of a band, I think of a group of artists sitting in front of the same canvas painting different parts of the same scenery. I had felt for a long while that I was painting a different scene on a different canvas altogether. We were just not on the same page on many fronts. However, that is okay. Everyone is entitled to their own journey. That is the beauty of life. How can I tell my fans to follow their heart and dreams and then not do the same for myself? That would be hypocritical for me to stay.”
Costa also said he had prepared to leave for some time, but stayed on to play shows because he felt he owed it to the fans who paid their money to see the existing lineup. He also stated that it would be unprofessional to leave the band in bad situation. My Darkest Days said they will continue as a four piece for the time being, and should begin recording their next album after the Three Days Grace tour is completed. That is, if Matt Walst and Three Days Grace decide not to continue together.
You can listen to what Three Days Grace will sound now sound like, as the band have posted the following three songs with Matt on vocals:
Rush is up first with their amazing new track 'Headlong Flight,' from the 'Clockwork Angels' album, which will be released on June 12th. The over 7 minute track attacks the senses in a way we have come to expect from the band.
Bassist-singer Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer-lyricist Neil Peart have recorded an entire album that follows the same narrative thread — that of a young man's journey to follow his dreams in a dystopian alternate world.
Rush will kick off their North American tour on Sept. 7th in Manchester, New Hampshire, with dates rocking through Dec. 2nd in Houston, Texas. The band will also be this will be headlining the Sweden Rock Festival in June of 2013, their first appearance at a European festival in 33 years! Their show at Sweden Rock Festival will be the only festival appearance in Europe, and the band's first festival appearance since they played at Pinkpop in Holland in 1979. In 2004, Rush played in Sweden for the first time in 25 years, selling out the Globe Arena in Stockholm.

Rival Sons' new video, for the fantastic track 'Face Of Light' is the next Rock Pick of the Week. The video sees a softer side of the band as they go through the beautiful scenery of the Peak District in the English countryside. The video was filmed with director Dan Ruttley during the band's recent sold-out UK tour with Black Stone Cherry.
Frontman Jay Buchanan comments: "I am happy to say that our record Pressure & Time is about to give us our third single with the song 'Face Of Light'. This is a very special song to us and I am delighted to put out a single with a positive message that can still break a tooth. Three singles from one record; I am so thankful for the support we've been shown. This will more than likely be our last single from the P&T record, so it's a fitting farewell to an unforgettable year with a song so personally close to the vest for me."
Rival Sons are ready to kick ass on all the major European rock festivals and have a couple of gigs in June lined up opening for Guns N' Roses in Netherlands and Germany. The band has recently completed recording their second album 'Head Down' in Nashville and it will be released in August on Earache records.
Bruce Springsteen's 'Rocky Ground' is up next from the 'Wrecking Ball' album. The black-and-white clip shows footage of the hands of a number of different people writing out the lyrics of the tune on a notepad superimposed over various urban scenes shot in slow-motion.
The clip was directed by Thom Zimny, Springsteen longtime videographer, whose credits include the 2010 documentary 'The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town.' The Boss makes a brief cameo in the video; see if you can spot him.
We've been traveling over rocky ground and a new day is coming.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played the second-biggest German show of their career on Wednesday (May 30) in Berlin before 55,000 fans. Springsteen played a set focused on new material from Wrecking Ball and an assortment of old favorites, but he opened the night with his first-ever live performance of Wizz Jones' 1973 tune "When I Leave Berlin."
Linkin Park's new album 'Living Things' will be out on June 26th, and the first track 'Burn It Down' is obviously a massive success. It currently sits at #3 on the rock charts, and the band released a video for it last week. Check it out and the 'making of' clip below.
The band's big summer Honda Civic Tour with Incubus kicks off on August 11th in Bristow, Virginia.
Godsmack's cover of the Joe Walsh classic ‘Rocky Mountain Way’ from their 'Live & Inspired' album is up next. The track is rising up into the top 10 of the rock charts, and it's well deserving with their kick ass version of the song for a new generation. The band performed 'Rocky Mountain Way' every night on the recent wrapped Mass Chaos tour with Staind, and now they’ve just released a performance based video for the tune.
My Darkest Days are back with the title track as the next single from their latest album 'Sick And Twisted Affair.' The album was produced by Joey Moi, who has worked with Hinder, Daughtry and Santana. It includes guest musicians John 5 (Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie) along with Three Days Grace members Barry Stock and Neil Sanderson.
The band has posted part 2 of their behind-the-scenes teaser, and in it they describe the tough personal relationships that served as much of the album’s inspiration. “I think we’ve all been in a relationship before that’s just so toxic,” explains lead guitarist Sal Costa. “You want it to be over, but don’t really want it to be over… Just seeing them with another person eats you alive.” “Humans, we’re all just walking contradictions,” adds Walst. The guys are rocking all summer long with Nickelback, Bush and Seether and continue.
“We listen to all types of music. We take stuff from R&B, hip hop, country and bring it into rock and make it something new,” so says My Darkest Days‘ frontman Matt Walst. The band took Joe & Mystikal’s 2007 Top 40 smash single “Stutter,” added a little sex appeal and re-worked it into a rock banger.
Bret Micheals stopped by CBS-TV's 'The Talk' to 'talk' about re-doing you. The Poison rocker, philanthropist, entrepreneur and most of all, true survivor Bret Michaels shares some hard-earned lessons about taking control of your life.
This from Rollingstone.com: Bret Michaels' upcoming solo album, 'Get Your Rock On,' will include a few friends. "Loretta Lynn and I are gonna redo 'Every Rose Has It’s Thorn' together," he tells Rolling Stone. "And, for me, growing up in a family that my father loved country music and Coal Miner’s Daughter, this is gonna be a really awesome time."
How did the two come together? "I met her at Thanksgiving and it was really great. We were out at her ranch in Hurricane Mills and we sat there, me and her, and after everyone, the whole family and my crew sort of dissipated we sat there and started writing some songs together," he says. And one of the ideas she had was redoing 'Every Rose Has It’s Thorn' and I thought it would be unbelievable for me and her to do that together."
Among the other guests on the album are Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen and Jimmy Buffett. "The song 'Get Your Rock On' has Phil Collen from Def Leppard playing guitar with me and it also has guitarist Sal Costa from My Darkest Days, really, really good guitar player and good friend," he says. "Jimmy Buffet and I did a live version of 'Margaritaville' together."
Michaels says the two duets, with Lynn and Buffett, will be "two bonus tracks." And of the rest of the record he says, "It is just straight up in your face rock & roll."
"Every Rose Has It's Thorn" is just one of the songs that came from his Thanksgiving jam session with Lynn. There will be more. "There are two songs we wrote together. One of them is going to appear, she’s a doing a new album with T-Bone Burnett, we’re gonna go down and do one on that," he says. "And then we’re gonna do one [on] an album that’s called Me, My Guitar And I, it’s a record that will come out either later in the year or sometime next year."
Michaels will be very busy in 2012, with Poison hitting the road this summer with Def Leppard in addition to his two planned solo albums.

Rock Picks of the Week: Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction, Furyon, My Darkest Days
Foo Fighters 'These Days' is the third single to be taken from the band's seventh album 'Wasting Light', which came out in April last year. The video was just released and compiles onstage action and behind-the-scenes footage of the group’s recent arena tour of Australia and New Zealand.
Foo Fighters will continue to be busy in 2012, having to attend multiple award shows all over the world, to undoubtedly collect a big-time amount of hardware for the 'Wasting Light' album. They all had better build a new trophy display case to fit them all.
Dave Grohl has also been jamming with various rockers who also recorded at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles for a documentary on the legendary studio. Ratt's Stephen Pearcy and Warren DeMartini have jammed with Grohl, as have Slipknot's Corey Taylor. REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin has also revealed that he will be a part of the project as well. Nirvana recorded the legendary 'Nevermind' album at Sound City.
Foo Fighters recently confirmed they are planning to head into the studio to record a new album this year. Despite only releasing 'Wasting Light' last year, frontman Dave Grohl revealed on the band's official blog that he has already started compiling ideas for new songs.
He wrote: "We're not finished yet. There are still more shows to play, more songs to write, more albums to record, for years to come. I mean if you would have told me 17 years ago that in 2012 I would be writing songs for our eighth studio album... well."
Red Hot Chili Peppers 'Look Around' is the third single from off the band's album 'I’m With You', and the next Rock Pick of the Week. The video is moves from room to room, showing each band member in a different setting, and of course a shot of Flea in his tighty-whities. Frontman Anthony Kiedis recently underwent surgery to remove a crushed sesamoid bone and correct a detached flexor tendon in his foot and is expected to make a full recovery, but it caused the upcoming tour dates to be moved, in many cases to months later. Check out the latest tour dates and news at www.redhotchilipeppers.com
Here's a short time lapse and a behind the scenes 'making of' video for 'Look Around'
Jane's Addiction's 'Underground' is the up, and the latest release from 'The Great Escape Artist.' I have posted the tame version of the video, but the band wants you to check out the sexier, explicit video for 'Underground' at www.playboy.com
Jane's Addiction have played sporatic gigs in support of the album, but will kick off their 'Theatre of the Escapists' tour on Feb. 22nd in St. Louis. The band will play legendary concert halls on this upcoming tour, with many venues hosting Jane's Addiction for the first time. Check out tour dates here.
Up next is a new band from the UK that really rocks! I like their vibe, I like their direction, and I like their brand of no bulshit rock and roll. Frontiers Records is excited to announce the Worldwide release of Furyon's debut album 'Gravitas' on March 23rd in Europe and March 27th in North America.
Furyon is a new band from the UK who like nothing more than to challenge expectations. Raised on a diet of heavy metal, prog, and classic rock, Furyon mix all these components for a truly unique and contemporary sound. Delivering huge rock radio friendly songs, with technically challenging, yet infectiously catchy musicianship. Dedicated to one sole purpose, making hard hitting songs that will stand the test of time. "Our music is good songs with touches of intelligence" says singer Matt Mitchell, "There are a many different moods that come out from this album and all the songs have meaning and substance. Heavy and Melodic! That is what Furyon and this album 'Gravitas' is about".
What separates Furyon from the crowd is the sheer quality of their musicianship. Boasting two truly world class guitarists in the form of Chris Green and Pat "The Shred" Heath, Furyon have few peers when it comes to the quality of their iconic riffs, and jaw dropping solos. Backing them up is one of the tightest rhythm sections the rock world has to offer with the awesome combination of Lee Farmery, and Alex (Nickel) Bowen. Leading from the front is the outstanding vocal versatility of Matt Mitchell, whose emotion drenched voice effortlessly moves between melodic and crunchingly heavy. "We really have been inspired by many bands over the time (as all musicians and writers are)" continues Matt, "but for this album inspirations from bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Tool, Mastodon, Alter Bridge and Iron Maiden spring to mind".
In 2009, after a sell out tour, and accompanying EP, Furyon set about the serious business of writing their debut album. The early demo's reached the ears of US producer Rick Beato (Shinedown, Fozzy), and a powerful and symbiotic relationship was formed. "Our hook up with Rick Beato was through Kip Winger" recalls Matt. "We toured with Winger on their Karma tour and we had spoken with Kip about the band Shinedown and how we liked their productions. Kip hooked us up with Rick and to our delight he was interested in doing the album. Rick is a truly great Producer and writer".
Released independently on a low profile and later covermounted on Metal Hammer UK, 'Gravitas' has now been picked up by Frontiers Records and the world will know all about Furyon soon!
Canadian rock band My Darkest Days have returned with their new single ‘Casual Sex’ off of their upcoming sophomore album, which is due this coming spring.
My Darkest Days consist of frontman Matt Walst, lead guitarist Sal Costa, bassist Brendan McMillian, keyboardist Reid Henry and drummer Doug Oliver. The song ‘Casual Sex’ features guitar work from virtuoso axeman John 5 (Rob Zombie / Marilyn Manson), and is produced by Joey Moi and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Linkin Park).
The upcoming album follows their 2010 self-titled debut, which sold more than 200,000 copies. That album featured their hit ‘Porn Star Dancing,’ which had Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and guitar work from Black Label Society’s Zakk Wylde on it. Look for a brief headlining club tour with Veer Union supporting at the end of March and first week of April.
The band shares the same management as Nickelback, thus the synergy as My Darkest Days will be opening for Nickelback, Bush and Seether on their North American tour from April 10 - June 26th. It looks like My Darkest Days are going to continue their streak as one of the hardest working rock band out there.
