Rock Picks of the Week: Alter Bridge, Beware of Darkness, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Halestorm, Los Lonely Boys

Already one of the most respected and popular acts in rock, Alter Bridge are back with the new track 'Addicted To Pain' from the band's new album 'Fortress.' The new album is due out October 8 in the USA and September 30th for the rest of the world. The album is their first new studio album in three years, and features twelve tracks that are sure to take Alter Bridge to an even bigger level if that is possible.

Myles Kennedy (vocals), Mark Tremonti (guitar), Brian Marshall (bass) and Scott Phillips (drums) enlisted their long-time producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette, known for his work with Falling In Reverse, Story Of The Year and Incubus to once again deliver another great album of hard and heavy rock, along with tracks that show the softer side of the band and the beautiful vocal melodies.

Alter Bridge will play one U.S. tour date on October 4th at the House of Blues in Orlando, Florida, before embarking on a European tour that will run from October 16th through November 16 and feature Shinedown and Halestorm joining the band on select dates.

Guitarist Mark Tremonti said about the project, "When we started pre-production on this album, we pushed ourselves harder and further than we ever have previously in order to make the most out of every individual arrangement. We wanted this album to be our most unpredictable and exciting one yet. From the early feedback we have received, it looks like we have achieved what we set out to do."

I'm sure the results will show that Mark is right, as Alter Bridge are set to be dominant in the rock world once again and are going to have a huge 2013-14!!

Beware of Darkness are a new power trio consisting of vocalist/guitarist Kyle Nicolaides, bassist Daniel Curcio, and drummer Tony Cupito. The band's track 'Howl' has an indie spirit, with an in your face retro vibe that I and apparently many others are digging, as the track is currently in the top 5 of the Mainstream rock and Active rock charts in the U.S. It comes from the band's new album 'Orthodox.'

Beware of Darkness came together in 2010 after Kyle Nicolaides met Tony Cupito at one of Kyle's shows in downtown Los Angeles. The two began playing shows with various bass players until they met Daniel Curcio, who was visiting Santa Monica after finding out he had a long lost half brother living there. Nicolaides then signed a record deal with Bright Antenna Records and the band started opening up shows for the likes of Social Distortion and The Wombats. They have since opened for Tegan and Sara, Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, Deftones and played at the 2012 & 2013 SXSW Festival.

In July, Beware of Darkness opened up for The Smashing Pumpkins on their European tour and are currently on the Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival in the U.S. with Alice In Chains, Jane's Addiction, Coheed and Cambria, Walking Papers, Danko Jones and more.

A band with a big future, I am expected a good run with the new album from the band and touring well into 2014.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd will be releasing his first studio album in 7 years "Fight For My Soul" on September 2nd in the UK and Europe through Mascot Label Group and on September 17th in U.S. and Canada with Concord Music Group. Lang worked on the release for three years with Producer Tommy Sims, who co-wrote Eric Clapton's Grammy winning "Change the World."

Lang says about the album, "Much of what I've experienced through music and life in general is in these songs. I really like reaching out and connecting with people. For me, this is what it's all about. It keeps it fresh with different experiences every day."

"This particular record has taken quite a long time to finish for a lot of different reasons, Lang added. "Most of all, I started having kids a few years back. Between being with the family, and being out on the road touring, the last thing you want to do when home is to go make a record. I'm really happy with the body of work we have for this one. It's kind of hard to be excited and know what the record going to be like when the process is extended over such a long period of time. Today, sitting here, I'm really proud of the recordings.""

Since the release of his 1997 major label debut "Lie To Me", the then 16 year-old Lang has built a reputation as one of the best live performers and guitarists of his generation.  The exciting new album should broaden his appeal and bring in new fans, while keeping the core he already has.

The first track released from the album, 'Blew Up (The House),' showcases the stellar vocals of Lang and the musicianship of his band, along with a Clapton vibe that you can really feel from the production work of Sims.

Halestorm have had one hell of a 2012-13 behind their 'The Strange Case Of...' album and frontwoman Lzzy Hale has firmly entrenched herself as one of, if not THE predominant leading woman in rock. The band were also awarded their first Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance this past February, some exciting recognition for the well deserved and constantly touring Pennsylvania band.

'Here's To Us' looks to be the last single from the current album and in the video for the song, Halestorm are initially transformed into a '8o's band with the big hair, spandex and eyeliner. That is followed by the band in grunge era attire, then the band wrap up the video for the track as they are, showing an appreciation for what has come before and influenced them. The video serves as a thank you for the fantastic last couple of years it has been.

The band released the following statement about the track and video:
"Here's to Us" is a song that we wrote for Us, About Us. It was the last song written for our record The Strange Case Of... Halestorm , and one that means the most personally. We've had a hell of a year, with a few number ones, a grammy, etc... plus this year marks our Tenth year as a foursome! We've been through a lot together as a band, and have always appreciated the low times as well as the high times, because it's about the journey for us. This sentiment has seeped its way into our fans base, who we've become very close to. It's been wonderful to hear the stories every night of what "Here's To Us" means to them! And also our road family, some of these wonderful people, including Maria Brink from In This Moment, Miles Kennedy of Alterbridge/The Conspirators, James Michael from Sixx Am, Brent Smith from Shinedown, Tyler Connolly from Theory Of A Deadman, David Draiman from Disturbed/Device, and of course Slash himself have joined us for special versions of this song!

The video is a little bit of everything Halestorm: we laughed our asses off, and also got a little emotional while filming it! We hope you enjoy it and that this song burrows itself deep inside your heart! From all of us in Halestorm, Thank You to all the Freaks and all the people that have made our Dream possible! Love you all!

- Lzzy, Arejay, Joe and Josh

We love you too...keep kicking ASS!

Los Lonely Boys are back with a new track 'Blame It On Love.' Guitarist Henry Garza recently told that the song "It is the first taste of this batch of new music we have recorded during our touring breaks. We picked this track to be the first to be released because we felt that this song really took us back to our Texican roots, and it was a song that almost anyone could connect with. The real inspiration behind this song was love, and we were looking for a way to say that love is the reason for everything. In all honesty, who hasn't had a situation where they could blame the outcome on love!? If we really pay attention, everything we do is motivated by love.

As for the actual recording of the track, the track was recorded in Austin, TX at Bismeaux Studios. We worked on this track with Don Gehman, and that was awesome. He has worked with so many greats (John Mellencamp, R.E.M.), and it was a humbling experience to be in the studio with him. Don just has a way of knowing how to make a track pop, and he did that with "Blame It On Love."

Overall, it was a great experience laying this track down, and we are very excited to share this new collection of songs. We are extremely blessed to continue to have the opportunity to spread the gospel of Texican rock and roll, and we hope that you like what you hear!"

The brother Garza will be touring through the rest of the Summer, with concerts booked into November. Get all the dates at

Alter Bridge has also made appearances recently on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel Live in support of ABIII. The band also won the the Greatest Guitar Solo of All Time by Guitarist Magazine for the “Blackbird” solo from the previous album of the same name.

Alter Bridge is Myles Kennedy, Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips.

Myles Kennedy talked to recently about his past, influences, recording again with Slash and more. Here's a portion of the interview:

Do you remember the first concert that you went to?

Very well. I went to see Sammy Hagar when he was doing the “I Can’t Drive 55” single. I think it was in January of 1985. And that was a big day for me. He was amazing. He was just this incredible front man. The thing I remember more than anything was that he climbed up on the lighting rig. And you know as a kid, I was like "WOW, look at that rock star way up high above the crowd" (laughs). And I was thinking he was putting his life on the line for his rock band. So I thought that was cool. He just had this energy and still does. He’s definitely one of those electrifying front men who can get a crowd riled up and basically have a big party for a few hours. So that was fun, a fun experience.

Who was the first real rock star that you ever met? Or the first one that made an impression on you?

You know what? I’ll say somebody that’s really impressed me a lot that I’ve met in the last few years was Lemmy. There’s something about Lemmy. The few times that I have interacted with him, I remember being really impressed with him on a few different levels. He’s very intelligent and very well spoken. A really cool guy. For a guy like myself, and Todd Kerns and I have talked about this, he’s like the Godfather, you know. He’s a brilliant songwriter, he’s just got that X-factor, that something that the rest of us just look at and are in awe of him. He’s the real deal.

Who has been your biggest influence as a musician and why?

My answer varies, as I’ve been asked this question a few times, but your question earlier reminded me of this and I failed to think of this in the past. Really my biggest influence would have to be my Mom. She is the person that got me to look at music as an outlet in my life early on. And I think as the years go by I think I’m more aware of how grateful I am that she did that. A lot of times parents won’t necessarily nurture that side of a kid. And I’m real fortunate to have her for a parent. I remember very well her telling me, “I didn’t get to play an instrument when I was a kid and I really want you to have that opportunity”. So that would be my mother. Read the entire interview here.

Creed to celebrate “My Own Prison” 15th Anniversary with shows performing album in its entirety

Creed to celebrate “My Own Prison” 15th Anniversary with shows performing album in its entirety

This from by Gary Graff on Creed will pay homage to its debut album with a series of special shows in April -- and throw in its follow-up for good measure. The group will celebrate the 15th anniversary of its six-times-platinum "My Own Prison" by performing six shows in three cities -- April 13-14 at the Chicago Theatre, April 16-17 at Philadelphia's Tower Theatre and April 19-20 at the Beacon Theatre in New York. The first night in each town will feature "My Own Prison" in its entirety along with selections from Creed's other three albums, while the second show will showcase 1999's 11-times platinum "Human Clay" from front-to-back, along with additional songs.

"We're doing this for our fans," Creed frontman Scott Stapp tells "They've talked so much on Twitter and Facebook, 'Play more songs... off the 'My Own Prison' album and off the 'Human Clay' album' -- and the same with the (2001) 'Weathered' album and even on to (2009's) 'Full Circle.' The band got together, and management, and we were sitting around chatting one day; I don't remember who came up with the concept, but we just totally fell in love with the idea -- going to small venues, playing the albums top to bottom. I think it's a great way for the band to reconnect to our roots and with each other and with our fans in a very intimate way that they've asked for."

Stapp says he and his bandmates are particularly looking forward to playing songs from those first two albums that Creed never played live or hasn't played since those albums first came out, including tracks such as "Illusion," "In America" and "Pity For a Dime." He also promises that Creed "is going to play some B-sides as well" and will dip into some of the less-celebrated songs from "Weathered" and "Full Circle." The group has already started soliciting fan suggestions for those rarities via its social media sites.

"One thing about the way the albums were built years ago is they told a story from the first song to the last song, so they're meant to be played that way," Stapp notes. "There was a reason behind the way we composed the songs and the way we put 'em together and organized them on the records. They have a natural ebb and flow to them, so it'll be real easy to listen to -- it's just gonna be a matter of catching up with the chops on the tunes we haven't played in a lot of years. But I think that will come back pretty quick."

And, Stapp predicts, dipping deep into Creed's past will make some impact on a new album the group is working on and planning for release in 2012. "I think definitely playing the music from the past and all the material we haven't played is going to help us reconnect with a lot of those emotions and incite some further inspiration," he says. Creed is currently "about six tracks" into its fifth studio album, but Stapp says that "we're not trying to rush this at all. We're still a band that likes to create albums and not just get three songs we think will connect with radio and put an album out. We want to put out solid albums and want it to be an organic process, just like we had with those previous records."

The rest of Creed -- guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips -- are currently touring Europe in their other band, Alter Bridge, wrapping up Nov. 29. They'll also be part of the Soundwave Festival in Australia during late February and early March. Stapp, meanwhile, plans to do some more of his solo acoustic shows, and he's continuing to work on his autobiography with David Ritz, which he predicts will be ready to submit to the publisher in March. And he's continuing to work on his second solo album, the follow-up to 2005's "The Great Divide."

"I've got enough material right now to do three albums," Stapp says. "There's some things that were out of my control that prevented that from happening, but I'm always working on material for that. It's definitely on the horizon. Right now my focus is on my baby, which is Creed, but there definitely will be another solo record soon."
