KISS remembers Dick Clark, check out the Rock on American Bandstand (video)

The site was down on April 18th when it was announced that Dick Clark had passed away, and although I did a post on the Marshall of Rock Facebook page, I wanted to do a full video tribute to Dick on the site. Today Paul Stanley posted this today about attending Dick Clark's Memorial:

"Yesterday, the private memorial for Dick Clark took place, and I was there by invitation along with Erin, Gene and Shannon. Dick was a true icon who changed the world of rock and roll while making a career of using his love of music to make icons of others. To see rock's greats spanning 5 decades humbled and giving thanks to this giant only underlined once again... the impact this wonderful man had on so many. Any of the current Idol/Voice type shows wouldn't exist without the trail that Dick Clark blazed to make them possible. He left an indelible mark on me for the irreplaceable generosity he showed KISS over the years. Always there with a word of guidance, we won't forget him. He will live on through his impact on countless aspects of American pop culture." Paul Stanley

The legend of the  incredible music and television icon Dick Clark will always live on. I grew up watching American Bandstand, and even though I'm a rock guy, I appreciate all music in general and thoroughly enjoyed what he brought into my world. Thank you Dick. Here's some of the best rock moments from AB. He even had Y&T and Dokken on AB.

Rock Picks of the Week: Soundgarden, Europe, Joe Walsh, Candlebox, The Treatment

Soundgarden start us off on this edition of Rock Picks of the Week with their fantastic new track 'Live to Rise' from the rocking 'Avengers Assemble' soundtrack. The soundtrack will be released just three days before the film on May 1. Soundgarden's latest will be featured in the end credits of what will be one of the biggest movies of the summer.

Soundgarden stated in an official press release recently, when just releasing a snippet of the song: "We've been hard at work on our new album, which will come out this Fall. When the opportunity arose to write an original song for the film came our way, we thought it could be a cool match. We are excited to release our new song, which is also the only new song in the film. Here's a taste. Loudest of Love."

Adam Kaspar, who co-produced Sondgarden's last record, 1996's "Down On The Upside", has been working with the group on the new album as well. Soundgarden will be making the European Festival trek this summer starting with a May 25 appearance at the Sonisphere Festival in Madrid, Spain. Soundgarden will also headline the 2012 Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park, London on July 13, 2012, with special guests Iggy & The Stooges and Cold Chisel. Here's the full slate of gigs for the summer:

May 25 - Sonisphere Festival - Madrid, Spain
May 27 - Pinkpop Festival - Heerlen, Netherlands
May 28 - Wertchter Boutique Festival - Wertchter, Belgium
May 29 - Le Zenith de Paris - Paris, France

The next Rock Pick "Not Supposed To Sing The Blues' comes from the new Europe album 'Bag Of Bones.' It's a great straight ahead rocker from the ninth studio album from the Swedish hard rockers, with references to great rock tracks from the past. It has passion, great musicianship and production, and just plain kick ass! The new album will be released on April 27 by earMusic/Edel. The CD features a guest appearance by guitar great Joe Bonamassa (Black Country Communion) and was produced by Kevin Shirley, who has previously worked with Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa, Black Country Communion, Black Stone Cherry and Journey, among others. If you think 'The Final Countdown' when you think Europe, get ready for something much different, and most definetly more rocking. Europe will be touring the globe in 2012-13 and vocalist Joey Tempest has said the band may not be performing that one in concert on the tour, although I find that hard to believe.

Commented Europe singer Joey Tempest: "Kevin Shirley did such a great job capturing the spirit of this band. He just let us do our thing and then pushed us and our songs to the max. Finally we express ourselves completely without restraint. Straight from heart and soul. It took some time but we have arrived!"

Added Europe guitar virtuoso John Norum: "Why drive VW beetle when you can drive a Rolls Royce?! 'Bag Of Bones' is a classic rock album with lots of class. Even my mom likes it!"

Regarding the new CD title, Europe drummer Ian Haugland said, "It's not (called 'Bag Of Bones') because we all have lost tons of weight or found a new interest in archeology or dogs... It's just because it sounds fuckin' cool!"

In a July 2011 press release, Tempest stated about Europe's new CD, "We still feel we have one hell of a rock record to make. Kevin's the man for the job. We love his work with Bonamassa, Black Country Communion, and Black Stone Cherry. He's the real deal. We're ready to do some serious damage."

Last year, Europe met up with Shirley in Stockholm to discuss the direction of the next album. Based on reactions from the fans and media, Europe's 2009 album, "Last Look At Eden", proved to be the band's most important record since "The Final Countdown". "I've been a big fan of Europe's work for many years," said Shirley. "The band is influential and highly underrated. I can't wait to make the upcoming album their most explosive to date."

The new material suggests a more straightforward rock approach evident in "Doghouse" — a new song Europe performed on their most recent U.K. tour. The song is also featured on Europe's "Europe: Live at Shepherd's Bush" DVD, released in August 2011 via earMUSIC CDs and DVDs.

Joe Walsh is getting ready to release his 10th solo album, ‘Analog Man’ on June 5. It’s his first solo offering in 20 years, and features the title track as the first single, which you can hear below. It's great to have some solo Joe after so long! 90's Rock gods Candlebox are back, and we're glad about it. Their new album 'Love Stories & Other Musings,' their first studio offering in four years, was released on April 3rd, and the band is currently on tour in support of the new album. 'Believe In It' is the first single, and shows growth, while bringing positivity and still retaining that Candlebox sound.

"Years ago I read something that changed the way I look at EVERYTHING! It struck so deeply that I have never forgotten it. It simply stated: Without music, life would be a mistake. I've never forgotten it, even when I was struggling to find a song or a melody it kept me searching and frankly I could not imagine my life without it," said lead vocalist and co-founder, Kevin Martin. "This record for me is no mistake, it is our music and our love for what a great gift we have been given. Love Stories & Other Musings is a new direction for us and I couldn't be happier to share it with our fans."

"I haven't felt this way about a release from Candlebox since our first record. The feeling for this record is both refreshing and stimulating," said guitarist Peter Klett. 'I can't be more excited to release this music to the fans who have been with us for so long."

The young U.K. rockers The Treatment round out the Rock Picks this week. All the guys in the band are around 18 years old, and although they made be young, they play and sound like bands that have been doing it for years.

The Treatment just completed a UK tour with Steel Panther, have already toured with other major rockers including Alice Cooper in the past, will support Thin Lizzy for a few shows during May in the UK, and play the Download Festival in Donington on June 9th. The big time news for the band is that they grabbed the coveted support slot on the upcoming KISS and Motley Crue North American co-headlining tour, simply dubbed 'The Tour.' That huge tour kicks off on July 20th in Bristow, Virginia and run through September 23rd in Hartford, Connecticut. Nikki Sixx played their song 'The Doctor' on his Sixx Sense radio show, liked it, and it all came together from there. This will raise the exposure level in the States for the band and I can't wait for them to blow the fuck up here!

The Treatment are:
Matt Jones-Vocals
Ben Brookland-Guitar
Tag Grey-Guitar
Dhani Mansworth-Drums
Swoggle-Bass

Fast Tube

The Treatment was recently in the studio laying down tracks for a brand new 70's covers EP; and as with the band's debut album, "This Might Hurt", released by Spinefarm Records last year, production has been overseen by Laurie Mansworth at Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris' Barnyard Studios, with Tony Newton mixing.

The track listing for the EP:

1. Run Run Run (Jo Jo Gunne)
2. Take Me Bake 'Ome (Slade)
3. Evil Woman (Electric Light Orchestra)
4. Motorbikin' (Chris Spedding)
5. Let's Work Together (Canned Heat)

The Treatment's Dhani will be playing at the Stick It to MS charity event on the 15th of July. 800 drummers are wanted to break a Guinness World Record in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

SITMS 2012 promises to be the largest gathering of drummers on drum kits the world has ever seen. If you are a drummer WE NEED YOU!! In 2009 582 drummers came to the NIA in Birmingham and broke a world record. In the process we managed to raise a staggering £66,315 for the MS Society.

In 2012 we are aiming to smash this record and raise more money whilst getting loud about Multiple Sclerosis. If anybody is interested in taking part and drumming check out the website: www.stickittoms.com

One of rock’s great drummers, Cozy Powell died on this day in 1998 (video)

One of rock’s great drummers, Cozy Powell died on this day in 1998 (video)

His resume reads like a classic rock bible: The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake, Emerson, Lake & Powell, Black Sabbath, Robert Plant, Gary Moore, Brian May, and many, many more. He is the legendary Cozy Powell, one of the greatest rock drummers in history. Today marks the 14th anniversary of the death of Cozy. I have always felt that because of the death of Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and Layne Staley of Alice In Chains on this day, Cozy gets overlooked when his name should be right there with the two of them.

Powell once said that he drove cars like he drummed - madly - was on the phone to his girlfriend as he hurtled down a highway at 104 miles per hour without wearing his seatbelt. Powell was killed when his powerful black Saab 9000 turbo blew a tire on April 5, 1998.

He was driving up the M4, near Bristol, on his way to visit his girlfriend Sharan Reeve in Cardiff. She heard a "terribly loud noise", then silence, as she talked to him on the phone. In a statement, Ms Reeve said that Powell had just told her he was having problems finding fifth gear, and hoped the engine would not seize up as he was going so fast. Then she heard him say: "Oh shit", and the line went silent.

She kept trying to ring him back until she realised something was wrong and contacted the police. Powell, 50, was found to be slightly over the drink-drive limit after the car spun, and the car came to rest on its roof.

Cozy Powell was born in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England, and started playing drums at age 12 in the school orchestra, thereafter playing along in his spare time to popular singles of the day. Powell started out with a vocal harmony pop band called the Sorcerers, which led Powell to friendships with fellow musicians like Robert Plant and John Bonham (both at the time unknowns in 'Listen'), future Slade vocalist Noddy Holder, bassist Dave Pegg and a young guitarist called Tony Iommi. The Sorcerers became Youngblood, and released a series of singles in late 1968–69.

From there he was recognized by Jeff Beck, joining his group from 1970-72. After the breakup of that band, he became an in demand session drummer, bashing for the likes of Hot Chocolate, Donovan and Suzi Quatro. He eventually formed 'Cozy Powell's Hammer' in April 1974. The line-up included Bernie Marsden (guitar), Clive Chamen (bass), Don Airey (keyboards) and Frank Aiello (Bedlam) on vocals.

In 1975 was in my opinion, where Cozy started becoming recognized internationally as one of the great drummers in rock. He joined Rainbow with Ritchie Blackmore, staying until 1980, but not until Rainbow headlined the first ever Monsters of Rock show at Castle Donington, England on August 16th. The festival was Powell's last show with the band.

After Powell left Rainbow, he worked with former Rainbow vocalist Graham Bonnet, For the rest of the 1980s, Powell assumed short-term journeyman roles with a number of major bands — Michael Schenker Group from 1981 to 1982, and Whitesnake from 1982 to 1985. In 1985 he started recording with Phenomena for their first album, which was released in 1986 when he joined up with Keith Emerson and Greg Lake as a member of Emerson, Lake & Powell.

A stint with Gary Moore followed in 1989. His was with Black Sabbath from 1988 to 1991, and again in 1994–1995. Between late 1992 and early 1993, Powell put together an occasional tour using the old band name 'Cozy Powell's Hammer' featuring himself on drums, Neil Murray on bass, Mario Parga on guitar and Tony Martin on vocals. Powell along with Neil Murray were members of Brian May's band, playing on the 'Back To The Light' and 'Another World' albums. Cozy played with May opening for Guns N' Roses on the second American leg of their 'Use Your Illusion' tour in 1993. The duo also served a spell with blues guitarist Peter Green in the mid-nineties. Cozy's last recording session was for Colin Blunstone's 'The Light Inside', alongside Don Airey, which was released shortly after Cozy's death. Prior to his death in 1998, Cozy had pulled out of a tour with Yngwie Malmsteen due to an injury and was preparing to tour with Brian May. The final solo album by Cozy Powell 'Especially For You' was released in 1998 after his death.

Los Angeles-based Ken Sharp, author of KISS' Behind The Mask (2003) and Starting Over: The Making Of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy (2010)  has teamed up with KISS legends Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley for the new hardcover book called Nothin' To Lose: The Making of KISS (1972-1975).

A description reads as follows:

"Nothin' To Lose chronicles for the first time the crucial formative years of the legendary rock band KISS, culminating with the groundbreaking success of their classic 1975 album Alive! and the smash single 'Rock and Roll All Nite', a song that nearly four decades later remains one of the band's most enduring anthems. Constructed as an oral history, the book includes original interviews with Paul, Gene, Ace, and Peter, as well as producers, engineers, management, roadies, costume and stage designers, fans, and musical contemporaries from the time, including: original manager Bill Aucoin, Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart, rock photographer Bob Gruen, promoter Ron Delsner, Ted Nugent, Dick Clark, Alice Cooper, Marshall Crenshaw, and Bob Seger, as well as members of Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Rush, Styx, Nazareth, Slade, Blue Öyster Cult, Uriah Heep, Mott The Hoople, The New York Dolls, The Ramones, and The Quattros, among others.
