Metalachi talk Chi-Chi’s and more with Marshall de Roca (video)

I have been officially indoctrinated into the ways of the METALACHI, and I am a better man for it. When I heard that the only Mariachi Heavy Metal band was making a return visit to SLO Brew in San Luis Obispo, California, I knew I had to be there to witness the spectacle. Just watching their YouTube videos doesn't do them justice. Being able to interview the boys just made the experience that more chi-chi filled!

Pre-show this Gringo had a chance to shoot the shit with all the members of the best Heavy Metal Band in the World out in the alleyway of the venue. Vocalist Vega De La Rockha, Maximillian "Dirty" Sanchez (violin), El Cucuy (trumpet), bassist Nacho Picante and Paco Halen on guitar all let me in on the secrets of the Metalachi ways.

Metalachi & Marshall
After the guys told us what brought them back for another sold-out show at SLO Brew and gave a little bio info on themselves, we touched on topics such as Chi-Chi jumping, the process of "Metalachizing" a song, their influences, an upcoming new album for the holidays, their fetishes. the Metalachi rocket ship and that Cheech doesn't know that he's Dirty Sanchez's Dad. Check it out.

The band then proceeded to the stage after the interview and the merging of the Metal and the Mariachi kicked off with 'Holy Diver.'

Megadeth, Guns N' Roses, Quiet Riot, Van Halen, Metallica, Poison, Slayer, Tenacious D and more have all said publicly how proud they are that Metalachi have taken their songs in such a great new direction. Well, maybe they didn't say that, but close enough. 'Killing In The Name Of' wrapped up the set, with the crowd still ready for more as Metalachi rode off into the night, ready to conquer the next village!

Metalachi are primed and ready to take over the world...Or at least Mexico, California and the Western United States. Seriously, ROCK ON METALACHI! Make sure you check out their website and find a tour date near you:

Mike Peters of The Alarm brings his rock ‘Declaration’ to San Luis Obispo (video)

It's not often when a rock artist of legendary proportions matches up to his musical legacy, with a legacy of activism. Mike Peters of The Alarm has certainly done that and more. I had a chance to talk to Mike on his return to San Luis Obispo, California on the 'Declaration' 30th Anniversary tour. We talked pre-show at SLO Brew about his visit to San Luis Obispo on the 'Strength' tour back in 1989 when I originally got a chance to meet him, and he shared some great memories of that show and a whole lot more.

We also talked about the re-issue and modernization of the 'Declaration' album, the state of radio then and now, releasing music on vinyl, the early days of the Alarm, his recent BBC Orchestra of Wales tribute performance and his fantastic Love, Hope, Strength Organization, which is an international, cancer charity providing support for cancer centers, and inspiration to those affected, throughout the world. Their mission is to save lives immediately with the advances that have already been made in cancer care. The non-profit uses their funds to purchase medical equipment and supplies, raise awareness through special events, documentaries and media, build cancer centers and find bone marrow donors. I myself am now on the bone marrow donor list and you should be too: -  Get involved!!

Mike also drops in stories about connections with Jack White, The Stray Cats, U2 and Bono, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and more. A new book, album and film are all on the way to look forward to from Mike as well! A great guy, great musician, and great humanitarian! Thanks Mike!

Michael Schenker brings his ‘Temple Of Rock’ to SLO Brew (photos)

The artistry, the longevity and the magnitude of a man who is truly a guitar legend was in full effect as Michael Schenker brought his latest incarnation of the Micheal Schenker Group to SLO Brew in San Luis Obispo, California on Tuesday night (Feb. 4) for a night of stellar ROCK!

After an opening set by the band Gundriver, featuring an animated frontman and a sound that harked back to the NWOBHM, the anticipation in the room built for the man who who has truly built a "Temple Of Rock."

Playing selections from his entire career, Schenker and his current U.S. touring unit ripped through early Scorpions songs, classic UFO and MSG tracks, and selections from the latest album 'Bridge The Gap.' Opening with a fantastic new track 'Neptune Rising/Where the Wild Wind Blows' set the tone for the evening and let everyone know Michael means business with this new material. The new album is truly full of great material that stands up and fits right in with all the classic material of his past.

That was followed by an onslaught of the best from MSG. 'Armed and Ready,' 'Cry for the Nations,' 'Let Sleeping Dogs Lie,' 'Assault Attack,' Attack of the Mad Axeman,' Rock My Nights Away' and 'Into The Arena' fired up the crowd of Schenker diehards and the momentum continued from there.

Schenker's current lineup, including long time member/collaborators Wayne Findlay on 7 string guitar and keyboards, Rev Jones on bass (MSG, Steelheart, Mountain, Paul Gilbert, Fuel, Jeff Martin, George Lynch, Kottak, Forte, and Black Symphony) and Pete Holmes on drums (Black 'N Blue), kicked it up even further with Scorpions tracks 'Lovedrive' and 'Another Piece of Meat.' Current vocalist Doogie White (Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force) delivered powerful vocals with a nice range and stage banter that fully connected.

A track written by Michael and Doogie for Ronnie James Dio followed, with 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead' paying tribute to their former friend and rock legend. Michael truly showed a happiness and joy on stage throughout, smiling like I had never seen him show in concert before. He has come through this monster of a music business with all of its trials and tribulations like a champion, and looks healthier and happier than I may have ever seen him before.

The UFO tracks 'Shoot Shoot,' 'Only You Can Rock Me,' 'Let It Roll,' 'Too Hot To Handle,' 'Lights Out,' Rock Bottom' and 'Doctor Doctor' wrapped up the show on such a high note, the crowd could have rocked until the sun came up and still been wanting more. A fantastic show in a club setting.....a perfect way to see up close and personal the greatness of an EPIC guitar legend!
