Dave Grohl’s Sound City All-Stars to debut at Sundance Film Festival (video)

In what is sure to be a magical night in Colorado, Dave Grohl and his Sound City Players will perform at the Sundance Film Festival as part of the 'Sound City' documentary premiere. The lineup is amazing with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and legends of punk, rock and pop.

The lineup for the show, taking place on January 18th, includes not only all of Grohl's fellow Foo Fighters members, but Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, John Fogerty, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour, Lee Ving of Fear, Rick Springfield, Rage Against the Machine's Brad Wilk, Chris Goss of Masters of Reality, Queen of the Stone Age's Alan Johannes, Rami Jaffe of the Wallflowers, and violinist Jesse Greene. All of the afformentioned artists have recorded at the legendary Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, which is what Grohl's documentary is all about.

There is no word on a set list or any subsequent shows, but rehearsals are ongoing and I can't wait to see what magic the gig will bring. The show is obviously the toughest ticket to get so far in 2013, so if you're going, post some video. I thank you in advance.

12.12.12. Hurricane Sandy benefit concert recap and highlights (video)

12.12.12. Hurricane Sandy benefit concert recap and highlights (video)

The 12.12.12 Hurricane Sandy relief concert took place last night at Madison Square Garden in New York City, and it truly was an epic event. It all kicked off a set by Bruce Springsteen anbd the E Street Band, who was joined by Jon Bon Jovi for 'Born To Run', that was followed by a Roger Waters set that included Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam helping out on 'Comforably Numb'. Adam Sandler (with Paul Shaffer) did a fantastic "New Yorker" version of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah', including lyrics that were both comedic and passionate.

Jon Bon Jovi and the band returned to the stage for their own set, and Bruce Springsteen returned the favor on a version of 'Who Says You Can't Go Home.' Sets by the great Eric Clapton, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, Kanye West and Alice Keys followed and it all wrapped up with Paul McCartney perfoming Beatles and Wings classics as well as being joined by Dave Grohl, Krist Noveselic and Pat Smear on a new track that we now know will be a part of the upcoming 'Sound City' movie soundtrack.

Proceeds from the show will be distributed through the Robin Hood Foundation. More than $30 million was raised through ticket sales alone.

Paul McCartney played a set that included the Beatles' "Helter Skelter," followed by Wings' "Let Me Roll It," "Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five," and the newer song "My Valentine" off of his 2012 release 'Kisses on the Bottom.' He also performed "Blackbird," "I've Got A Feeling," and "Live And Let Die," the latter two coming after his appearance with the former Nirvana crew.

Kurt Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, told TMZ that she was "not amused" after hearing the news. Love stated, "Look, if John [Lennon] were alive, it would be cool." Love also told TMZ that she was upset with Novoselic and Grohl for calling the 12-12-12 performance “a Nirvana reunion,” because she says that Cobain was the heart and soul of the band.

Paul McCartney with Dave Grohl, Krist Noveselic and Pat Smear 'Cut Me Some Slack' will live on beyond the benefit as the Foo Fighters tweeted after the show that it was the first song off of the upcoming ‘Sound City‘ documentary soundtrack. I would have liked to have seen the guys on an actual Nirvana tune, and was hoping for some kind of all-star jam as the close of the concert, but that didn't happen. The concert was well past curfew, so I understand, but it did come to kind of an abrupt end. I am not complaining though, because it is all about the cause, and I thanks all the artists for coming together to contribute to rebuilding the damage caused to the people affected by Hurricane Sandy. We wish them all the best this holiday season.

New trailer for Dave Grohl’s Sound City Studios documentary posted

A new trailer of 'Sound City,' the feature-length documentary directed and produced by Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, about Los Angeles' legendary and now defunct Sound City recording studio in Van Nuys, California has been posted. The concept for the movie was conceived by Grohl after he bought an equally famous Neve 8028 recording console from the studio. The console, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment.

The Neve 8028 was used to record an amazing list of classic albums by the likes of Nirvana, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns N' Roses, Rage Against The Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica and countless others over the past 40 years. The clip features John Fogerty, Tom Petty, Mick Fleetwood and others discussing their experiences recording at the legendary Los Angeles studio and working with the Neve 8028.

"It's tube-driven, it's analog," comments Fogerty. "The bass sounds better, the human voice sounds better." Sound City will reportedly include new music and interviews with a wide variety of other artists, including Rick Springfield collaborating with Corey Taylor, members of Cheap Trick, Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon and Stephen Pearcy and Warren DeMartini of Ratt. No release date for the film has yet been announced, but Grohl hopes to have it out by early 2013.
