Record Store Day is coming! Check out 2012 releases, Ambassador Iggy Pop shares vinyl memories (video)

Record Store Day 2012 is upon us next weekend (April 21) and a more than worthy Iggy Pop is the 2012 Ambassador. Record Store Day started five years ago when 700+ American indie stores came together to celebrate record store culture. It always takes place on the third Saturday in April. The U.K. followed suit, with 2012 marking its fourth celebration as an independent sector. Similar to the U.S., the U.K. indie stores partner with bands to celebrate art of music with special exclusive releases that are desirable to own and fun to collect. Iggy will be making his own Record Day Store stop at Sweat Records for Sweatstock in Miami, Florida. If you're in the area, get over there!

Check out this fantastic video of Ambassador Iggy sharing his vinyl memories. He talks about his first purchase, working in a record store, and so much more:

There is an abundance of rock being released again this year, with this list of artists worth noting: 311, Amberlin, Arcade Fire, Aretha Franklin/Otis Redding, Brad, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Disturbed, Eddie Vedder, Flogging Molly, Garbage, Genesis, Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, Eve 6, Iggy Pop and The Stooges, Janis Joplin, Jimmy Fallon (Tebowie), Joey Ramone, Little Richard, Mastodon/Feist, Metallica, Misfits, Ozzy Osbourne, Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend, Phish, Rainbow, Rival Sons, Small Faces, Switchfoot, T. Rex, The Black Keys, The Byrds, The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, The Clash, The Cult, The Grateful Dead, The Knack, The White Stripes, Social Distortion, Lou Reed, Paul Simon, and many more.

Please support your local Record Store! It is more important than you know. With the talk of Best Buy closing stores, and the past bankruptsy of Circuit City, our local Record Stores are one of the last places to be exposed to and buy new music in that type of enviroment. Fuck Wal-Mart (and Best Buy and Circuit City for that matter), we need to keep the experience alive of going to a business where they care about all music and care about exposing new artists of merit. The shared experience and coolness of a howntown record store CANNOT go away!!  Get all the info and the stores near you here:

Let's highlight a few of the releases. Metallica's four-song EP called "Beyond Magnetic", which was made available digitally in December, and as a physical CD in January, will be released on silver vinyl to celebrate Record Store Day on April 21. The effort consists of the quartet of previously unheard tracks that the band unveiled in concert in December during its 30th-anniversary celebration. All four tunes, 'Hate Train', 'Just A Bullet Away', 'Hell And Back' and 'Rebel Of Babylon' were recorded during the sessions for the band's 2008 'Death Magnetic' album but left off the final track list. The studio versions of all four songs- all rough mixes were sent to Metalica fan club members one at a time, after each song was performed live during each of the band's four shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco.

Metallica talks Record Store Day: "We've always been big supporters of our friends at independent retail and the annual event the third Saturday of each April... we even helped kick off the first year in 2008 with an in-store appearance at one of our hometown stores! To add to the fun, this is no ordinary black vinyl release, but instead will be on silver vinyl with an exclusive Metallica sticker included in the package. Look for the EP on the special Saturday release date at your favorite local record store and on"

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release an Ozzy Osbourne seven-inch and 12-inch vinyl release. The Ozzy releases for Record Store Day 2012 are:
-'Live' 12-inch 180-gram audiophile vinyl LPs (two-disc set): A limited, numbered collector's edition recorded live on the 1981 'Blizzard Of Ozz' tour with legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads
-'Believer' live seven-inch single: A limited, numbered collector's edition on polka-dot vinyl featuring 'Believer' (live) + 'Goodbye to Romance' (2010 guitar and vocal mix)

The Cult are releasing a picture disc with tracks from the phenomenal forthcoming 'For The Animals' album.

A vinyl re-issue of David Bowie’s 1972 single 'Starman' will get the special treatment on Record Store Day when it’s re-released as a limited-edition picture disc. The A-side will be the original single version, whereas the B-side will be the version of 'Starman' from the legendary (mono) 'Top Of The Pops' TV performance.

Bruce Springsteen's 'Rocky Ground' will be available as a 45 on Columbia, with the tracks: 'Rocky Ground' and 'The Promise.' 'Rocky Ground' is from Bruce's latest album 'Wrecking Ball' and 'The Promise' is Live from The Carousel, Asbury Park (audio taken from the DVD 'The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town')

Disturbed will be release a definitive vinyl box-set edition, 'The Collection.' The 5 LP-set includes the original track listing from the band's entire full-length catalog: 'The Sickness,' 'Believe,' 'Ten Thousand Fists,' 'Indestructible' and 'Asylum' and is pressed on 140-gram vinyl.

Our Record Day Ambassador Iggy Pop and the Stooges will release a 12" Picture Disc 'Live at All Tomorrows Parties'
"Night Theme/Beyond the Law"
"I Wanna Be Your Dog"
"Open Up And Bleed”
"Funhouse/No Fun"
"Iggy Interview"

Tracks from Iggy and the Stooges' All Tomorrow's Parties performance were hand selected by the band, along with a rare Iggy Pop interview by Greg Prato. It also comes with a download card offering the complete RAW POWER performance.

Iggy Pop 'Raw Power' 2LP set w/ both the 1973 David Bowie mix and the 1997 Iggy Pop mix, along with a 16 page book.

Janis Joplin's 'Highlights From the Pearl Sessions' will be released by Columbia on 10" vinyl, It's an exclusive RSD vinyl companion to the 2 CD reissue of Pearl (being released as The Pearl Sessions). Highlights from The Pearl Sessions presents an alternate view and an inside look at the Pearl recording sessions, with several previously unreleasd and almost-never-heard alternate takes and early versions of classic songs.

Jimmy Falon's 'Tebowie' will be available for the first time ever. It comes from a parody on his show of a David Bowie impression with lyrics about (now New York Jets quarterback) Tim Tebow. Tracks 'Tebowie' and 'Reading Rainbow.'

Joey Ramone will release a 45 with the tracks 'Rock 'n' Roll Is the Answer' and 'There's Got To Be More To Life'

The White Stripes 'Hand Springs' and Red Death at 6:14' on 7" 45 black and red swirled vinyl. Continuing in the mission of reissuing the nuggets of the White Stripes’ back catalog, Third Man plays Dr. Frankenstein/matchmaker to two stand-alone songs from the high time of the year 2000. “Hand Springs” was originally released as a split-single with the Dirtbombs and included free in issue #19 of Multiball magazine. “Red Death at 6:14” was initially released on the Jack White-produced compilation “Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit” and was later made available as a one-sided single from the folks at MOJO magazine. Both songs are quintessential White Stripes jams and finally pairing them together here makes (arguably) one of the best Stripes singles ever

Social Distortion 'Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes' Limited Edition (750) Colored - Lime Green Vinyl. Includes: CD of album and 18" X 24" Poster. Randomly selected pieces will have an autographed poster inside.

Queen to play Sonisphere with vocalist Adam Lambert

Queen to play Sonisphere with vocalist Adam Lambert

Brian May and Roger Taylor have confirmed a return to the site of Queen's last ever show with Freddie Mercury in 1986 as they headline Sonisphere UK at Knebworth on July 7th.

Billed as Queen + Adam Lambert, the show will see Taylor and May perform with US singer Adam Lambert, with whom they have previously appeared on American Idol and at the MTV Europe Music Awards. NME spoke to Lambert in his first interview since the announcement, he admitted to being unfamiliar with UK rock festival traditions such as 'bottling'.

"Oh great!" he said when given the lowdown. "Well I'll be sure to wear something that protects my helmet. I wear a helmet onstage, maybe that would be a good fashion statement."

Although the announcement will undoubtedly polarise the opinions of Queen fans, Brian May is confident that "Adam would meet with Freddie's approval."

Lambert commented: "I'm completely in awe of the Queen phenomenon. The thought of sharing the stage for a full set is so beautifully surreal. I'm honoured to be able to pay my respects to Freddie's memory.

"He's a personal hero of mine and I am deeply grateful for the chance to sing such powerful music for fans of this legendary band. I know the evening will be a huge milestone for me, and with the support of Brian, Roger and the rest of the band I know magic will be on display."

The American Idol contestant insisted that he is not trying to replace the later Freddie Mercury. He said: "The way I look at it is I’m not trying to imitate or outdo him or compete in any way, that’s not even in my mind at all, I think it's really an honour to be asked to sing the music that he and the band wrote and get up there and put on a good show. If people are too busy trying to compare, they're not going to enjoy the music."

Lambert hasn't ruled out another collaboration in the future, but he insisted that for now the Knebworth show is simply a one-off. "One of the things (people have said) was, 'He's gonna be the permanent frontman of Queen'. And although that would be a beautiful experience, the tricky thing this year for me is I also have my album coming out, 'Trespassing', and that's gonna take a lot of work and time and energy. So it's really a one-off experience with the band, and I'm really excited for it. But I'm not joining the band and touring with them."

The UK leg of Sonisphere 2012 will also feature KISS, Faith No More, Marilyn Manson, Incubus, Evanescence,  Wolfmother, The Darkness, Mastodon, Switchfoot and more.

KISS News: Sonisphere 2012 Headliners, ‘Archie Meets KISS’ comic issue 4 preview, KISS 70′s style action figures and new ‘Nothin’ To Lose: The Making of KISS’ book to be released

KISS will headline the opening night of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012, England's annual massive music festival! The July 6th show will be KISS' only European show this year.

Sonisphere Knebworth takes place July 6th - 8th at Knebworth House. The three-day festival also includes performances from Queen featuring Adam Lambert, Faith No More, Evanescence, Marilyn Manson, Incubus, Mastodon, The Darkness, Wolfmother, Lacuna Coil, Flogging Molly, Switchfoot, Cypress Hill, Andrew W.K. and many more.

Here's the latest preview of the 'Archie Meets KISS’ comic series.  In the previous issue Archie had been turned into a zombie and it was up to Kiss to save the day, in issue four it looks like Kiss are the ones in trouble.

Kiss arrive in Riverdale ready to battle evil with the immortal power of rock music, hitting the stage and busting out a version of ‘Rock and Roll All Nite’ for their newest fans. Things quickly turn ugly as some uninvited guests show up at the gig. The question is, will Kiss survive to rock another day?

Here's a four page preview of the latest issue of this four-part tale. ‘Archie Meets Kiss’ issue four hits comic book stores this Wednesday, Feb. 22

Figures Toy Company is readying to release Kiss action figures reminiscent of the ones first released in the ‘70s by Mego. They’ll be available in both 8” and 12”. Each 8” figure comes with a tiny replica album cover of Love Gun while the 12” ones come with mini Kiss concert tees. They’ll be out in March.

Los Angeles-based Ken Sharp, author of KISS' Behind The Mask (2003) and Starting Over: The Making Of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy (2010)  has teamed up with KISS legends Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley for the new hardcover book called Nothin' To Lose: The Making of KISS (1972-1975).

A description reads as follows:

"Nothin' To Lose chronicles for the first time the crucial formative years of the legendary rock band KISS, culminating with the groundbreaking success of their classic 1975 album Alive! and the smash single 'Rock and Roll All Nite', a song that nearly four decades later remains one of the band's most enduring anthems. Drawing on more than 200 interviews, the book offers a captivating and intimate fly-on-the-wall account of their launch, charting the struggles and ultimate victories that led them to the threshold of superstardom. Constructed as an oral history, the book includes original interviews with Paul, Gene, Ace, and Peter, as well as producers, engineers, management, roadies, costume and stage designers, fans, and musical contemporaries from the time, including: original manager Bill Aucoin, Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart, rock photographer Bob Gruen, promoter Ron Delsner, Ted Nugent, Dick Clark, Alice Cooper, Marshall Crenshaw, and Bob Seger, as well as members of Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Rush, Styx, Nazareth, Slade, Blue Öyster Cult, Uriah Heep, Mott The Hoople, The New York Dolls, The Ramones, and The Quattros, among others. The end result is an indelible and irresistible portrait of a band on the rise and the music scene they changed forever.

The 448 page Nothin' To Lose: The Making of KISS (1972-1975) is due our via It Books on August 14th.
