Springsteen News: Apollo Theater Sirius/XM Anniversary Fundraiser show recap (video), Jon Stewart interviews the Boss for Rolling Stone Magazine

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band rocked a 20-song, two-hour and five-minute concert for 1,500 people at New York’s legendary Apollo Theatre last night (Mar. 9). The show was a celebration of SiriusXM’s 10th anniversary and a fundraiser for WhyHunger. The show was broadcast over the satellite radio service’s E Street Radio station.

Eight songs during the show came from Springsteen's recently released 'Wrecking Ball' album, including the first two, ‘We Take Care of Our Own’ and the title track. The band ran through many of their classics as well, including 'The Promised Land,' 'The Rising' and 'Thunder Road.'

Paying tribute in a sense to Harlem's Apollo, Springsteen talked about how much he had learned about life from the soul greats of the 1960's. The E Street Band then performed several classic soul songs including the Temptations, 'The Way You Do the Things You Do,' Wilson Pickett’s '634-5789 (Soulsville, U.S.A.),' during which Springsteen climbed up into the balcony. The show closed with Sam & Dave’s 'Hold On, I’m Comin' as the Boss was led off the stage by his tech in the style of James Brown.

At the end of the band introductions as 'My City of Ruins' came to a close, he asked the crowd, "Are we missing anybody," talking not only of saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who passed lat year, but also organist Danny Federici, who died in 2008. The crowd then rose to their feet as Springsteen continued "The only thing I can guarantee you is that if you're here and we're here, they're here."

Springsteen sang the line, 'They made that change uptown and the Big Man joined the band' during 'Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out' unaccompanied as the crowd cheered. The horn section then played Clemons’ famous two-bar solo in unison. It was quite a tribute to the gone but never forgotten Big Man.

Clarence's nephew Jake Clemons played his uncle’s famous solo on 'Badlands,' 'The Promised Land' and 'Thunder Road.' He also played sang backup vocals on several other numbers. The world tour kicks off in Atlanta on March 18.

'Daily Show' host Jon Stewart has interviewed Bruce Springsteen for the cover story in the next issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands March 16th.

"It’s not at all surreal," Stewart said sarcastically while referring to his friendship with the legendary rocker. "It’s very hard to reconcile sitting and fishing in a little pond in New Jersey with a guy that you spent many years hitchhiking the New Jersey I-95 corridor to see in Philadelphia back in the day. The only band I think I’ve seen more than Bruce Springsteen is the Springsteen tribute band Backstreets. I try not to let him know how pathetic I truly am."

In this interview, the two talk at length about Springsteen's new album, 'Wrecking Ball,' as well as their common ground as popular entertainers with a serious interest in politics. Springsteen offers his take on Occupy Wall Street and the negative influence of what he calls the "big-money Wall Street hustle," explains why his new single "We Take Care of Our Own" is not "jingoistic" and opens up about how he's coping with the death of E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons. "Losing Clarence was like losing the rain," Springsteen says. "You’re losing something that has been so elemental in your life for such a long time."

Jon Stewart’s interview with Bruce Springsteen will be available on newsstands and through Rolling Stone All Access on March 16th, 2012.
