Toto at Vina…a Sunday night in Wine Country

Toto wrapped up their Summer 'An Evening With' tour at the beautiful Vina Robles Amphitheatre this past Sunday and it was an evening of stellar musicianship, all the Toto hits, tracks from their latest studio album 'XIV,' and even a cover featuring some fantastic guitar work by one of the best, Steve Lukather.

The core Toto members, Steve Lukather, David Paich, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams were joined by Lenny Castro (percussion), Shannon Forest (drums), the legendary Leland Sklar (bass), and back-up vocalists Mabvuto and Jenny Douglas for a show that spanned the decades of great material from the band, and showed off the amazing talents of everyone on that stage. As individuals, the members can be heard on an amazing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums and more than 200 Grammy nominations.

Approaching 40 years of making music, Toto well represented their first self-titled LP (released 38 years ago), kicking off their set with the first track on that album, the instrumental 'Child's Anthem' right into 'I'll Supply the Love.' 'Georgy Porgy' and the top 5 hit 'Hold the Line' were featured later in the show.

The band has certainly known their share of ups and downs over the years personally and professionally, with the loss of great band member brothers Mike and Jeff Pocarro to Lou Gehrig's disease and heart attack, and nearly getting dropped from their label after their initial success. They certainly did rebound and persevere to make their amazing 'Toto IV' album, which yielded three top 10 hits and was awarded 7 Grammys, including record and album of the year. The classic tracks 'I Won't Hold Back,' 'Afraid of Love,' and the massive hits 'Rosanna' and 'Africa' represented that special era for the band in the set, with 'Africa' wrapping up the show encore.

Five fresh songs from the band's latest album 'TOTO XIV,' released last March made the setlist, and fit right in with the melodic progressive direction that was felt on this Fall evening in Central California wine country. Check out Toto's first new studio album in ten years and everything about the band at

A highlight for me was seeing the great Steve Lukather perform a cover of Robin Trower's 'Bridge of Sighs,' showcasing the talent of one of the great guitarists of his era. One of the leaders of Toto since its inception in 1976, Steve has also been one of the most sought-after session guitarists in Los Angeles music history, playing with a wide range of artists and performing on over 1,500 records spanning over 36 years. He is known as one of the top 10 session guitarists of all time and has been a part of so many legendary hits and recordings.

Toto are true survivors and thrivers of the music business, having earned their place as a truly great American rock band. Hopefully one day, they will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as it is more than deserving.

The one song I would have liked to see the band perform was '99,' but that didn't put a damper on what was a beautiful night of music at a beautiful venue for Toto to wrap up their 2016 Summer tour.

Marshall of Rock Interview: Bassist/Producer/Engineer Billy Sherwood of Nektar talks new album, Yes connection and more

Marshall of Rock Interview: Bassist/Producer/Engineer Billy Sherwood of Nektar talks new album, Yes connection and more

I had the pleasure to talk to the multi-talent Billy Sherwood today and it was some great conversation. Billy is a man of incredible talent, with a true and passionate love of music. A master musician, award winning producer, mixer and engineer, Billy has worked with an A to Z list of legendary rock artists in every facet of the music business. I caught up with Billy while on his way to rehearsal with legendary art rock band Nektar, as the other guys were in his rear-view mirror as we spoke. We touched on Billy's involvement with Nektar and their only 2012 gig tomorrow night (Sept. 6) at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, California. We also talked about one of his other projects, The Prog Collective, his over 20 year involvement with the band Yes, his rock production work on many rock tribute albums, including a new one for Supertramp called 'Songs of the Century: An All-Star Tribute To Supertramp'. Billy also talked about his production/engineering work with a wide range of artists, inlcuding Paul Rodgers, Dangerous Toys, and Motorhead, sharing an interesting story about recording with Lemmy at the on-set of the Los Angeles riots that you've got to hear. Add to that his take on the current state of the music industry, what created his passion for music in general and what iconic entertainment figure was his Godfather, and it makes for some interesting music conversation. Check it out below:

Here's the official press release for Nektar with all the info and links on tomorrow night's show. Get tickets and check it out if you're in the area!:

Los Angeles, CA…On September 6th, legendary art rock outfit Nektar will be performing its only 2012 U.S. concert at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA.  Nektar’s renowned big sound and epic live performance in an intimate setting makes this a can’t-miss show.

Though comprised of four Englishmen, Nektar formed in Germany in 1969, and earned a cult following for its psychedelic, spacey approach.  In the mid-1970s, Nektar attracted attention and a growing fanbase in America with several concept albums and a uniquely visual live show.  The band continues to perform today to a fervent and developing audience, and remains an influence for “space rock” artists around the world.

Nektar is featured in the August 14 Cleopatra DVD release, SPACE ROCK INVASION, a live show taped in Los Angeles, and is releasing SPOONFUL OF TIME (September 11 via Cleopatra), an incredible collection of classic rock covers re-imagined with the help of members of Yes, King Crimson, Symphony X, Opeth, Marillion, Asia, The Moody Blues, Dream Theater, Tangerine Dream and more.

An added treat, multi-talented musician Billy Sherwood will be debuting as bass player with Nektar.  Sherwood has played in Yes (and several of its reconfigurations), Yoso, Toto, Circa, World Trade and others.  As a producer, mixer and engineer, he’s spearheaded THE PROG COLLECTIVE, and contributed to recordings by Yes, Motorhead, Paul Rodgers, Dangerous Toys and all-star tribute albums to artists such as Queen, AC/DC, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.  He will also be producing and playing bass on the new Nektar album of original songs, recording this fall.

The Coach House is located at 33157 Camino Capistrano in San Juan Capistrano, CA.  Tickets for Nektar are $15 and can be purchased in advance by calling 949.496.8930 or at  Doors are at 6pm, show starts at 8pm with Sixstep.  This is an all-ages event.

Leslie West says of leg amputation: “it’s a good thing it wasn’t one of my arms. Then I’d be really f**ked.”

by on Jul.15, 2011, under CD/DVD RELEASES, ROCK NEWS

Leslie West says of leg amputation: “it’s a good thing it wasn’t one of my arms. Then I’d be really f**ked.”

Leslie West says that a looming new album in August and concert tour this fall have given him incentive to recover from having the bottom half of his right leg amputated last month.

"I don't think there is another attitude," the former Mountain man recently told from the New Jersey rehabilitation facility where he's being taught how to live without the leg after it was removed just above the knee on June 20 in Memphis, due to complications from diabetes. "I cried a couple fuckin' times. I look down -- 'Where is it?!' You still feel the nerves and stuff like that. I had to make a decision - lose my leg or lose my life. What are you gonna do? But I'll tell you," the guitarist adds, "it's a good thing it wasn't one of my arms. Then I'd be really fucked."

Leslie West will release the new solo album, Unusual Suspects, on September 20th. The album follows the recent news that West underwent life-saving surgery on June 17th, when his leg was amputated above the knee. West (a long-time sufferer of type 2 Diabetes) was aboard a long-haul flight to Mississippi to perform at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, when the limb began to swell. He was rushed to the emergency room and lost consciousness. The decision to proceed with the operation was made by his wife, Jenni, who remarks, “It was his leg or his life.” This ordeal hasn't fazed West as he insisted on honoring the album release date.

Released by Provogue Records, Unusual Suspects features West performing alongside an all-star hand-picked line-up of the world's finest guitar players, including Slash, blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa, Black Label Society frontman and ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and Toto's Steve Lukather. Unusual Suspects is West's first album since 2006's Blue Me.

"These guys don't just show up to play on everybody's albums," says West on his special guests and the album's title. "They're all stars in their own right, and fantastic players - everyone with their own sound and style, about as far from the usual suspects as it gets."

Unusual Suspects tracklisting:

'One More Drink For The Road' (featuring Steve Lukather)
'Mudflap Mama' (featuring Slash)
'To The Moon'
'Standing On A Higher Ground' (featuring Billy F. Gibbons)
'Third Degree' (featuring Joe Bonamassa)
'Nothing's Changed' (featuring Zakk Wylde)
'I Feel Fine'
'Love You Forever'
'You & Me'
'Turn Out The Lights' (featuring Slash & Zakk Wylde)
'Beetle - I Don’t Know' (Bonus track)

Leslie West has been a regular on the Howard Stern Radio Show for quite some time and it was Stern whom he gave an interview in late June 2011, from his hospital bed, mere days after undertaking life-saving surgery which saw his leg amputated above the knee.

“Now I’ve got to figure out how to play the guitar [whilst standing] on one leg,” he states, under no illusions regarding the size of the task ahead. “The prosthetic ones they have these days are really good, but of course I’m used to balancing my weight on two feet. I’m going to have to retrain myself.” Best of luck to you Leslie!!
