Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden will launch Island Sounds: A 500 Year Music Mash-Up on May 11th, 2012. The 18-month, interactive, multi-media exhibition will be mounted in the Main Hall (Building C) on the Snug Harbor campus at 1000 Richmond Terrace and will include memorabilia, instruments, artifacts, photos and videos from musicians and artists who were born, based or performed on Staten Island throughout history.
Beginning Sunday, May 12th, the exhibit will be open Wednesday through Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for students and seniors. Children under 12 are admitted free. The show is scheduled to run through December 20th, 2013.
“We are excited and pleased to present this unique exhibit as a tribute to the countless artists who have played a role in Staten Island’s rich and varied musical history,” said Snug Harbor President and CEO Lynn Kelly. “The exhibit memorializes the contributions of these artists and defines the part they played and continue to play in our diversified culture. I urge everyone with an interest in music, pop culture and the history of Staten Island to come and enjoy the hundreds of unique pieces of memorabilia that make up the Island Sounds exhibition.”
Island Sounds features a timeline of Staten Island’s music history that begins pre-1500, with songs of the Lunaape (Lenape) Indians, and includes Dutch tavern music of New Amsterdam of the 1600s, 1850 classical opera, 1900 vaudeville, jazz of the 1920s, the Big Band era of 1940, disco and folk music of the 1970s, and today’s rock and rap.
Inside the Main Hall, the galleries contain rare and historic items from many of the artists’ personal collections, including: Reunion tour costumes from both David Johansen (New York Dolls) and AJ Pero (Twisted Sister) Guitars from Vito Bratta (White Lion), Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (Guns N’ Roses), Richie Castellano (Blue Oyster Cult), and Steve Augeri (Journey) Living Colour founder Vernon Reid’s 1989 MTV Video Music Award for Cult of Personality and custom Starr double-neck guitar, Rare Bruce Springsteen demos, documents, and platinum albums from former manager/producer Mike Appel, A unique collection of over two-thousand hotel keys belonging to drummer Sandy Gennaro (Pat Travers, Cyndi Lauper, The Monkees, Bo Diddley). Plus, many other rare photos, gold/platinum albums and documents.
“I grew up just a couple of blocks from Snug Harbor and when I was a kid this used to be part of my stomping ground,” said David Johansen of the New York Dolls and Buster Poindexter fame. “It’s so great that Snug Harbor is so vital again.”
Island Sounds also celebrates the 120th Anniversary of Snug Harbor’s Music Hall. Built in 1892, the Music Hall is the one of the oldest concert halls in New York City, second only to Carnegie Hall. Designed by Robert W. Gibson in Greek Revival-style, it has been a popular venue for a wide variety of vaudeville, theatrical and orchestral performances. In its long history, it has showcased a diversity of world-famous talents, ranging from Jenny Lind to Tito Puente, Tony Randall to David Bowie, and more recently Ingrid Michaelson. In October 2011, Lady Gaga filmed her biopic music video Marry the Night in the Music Hall and at several other Snug Harbor locations depicted in the exhibition.

Dee Snider Does Broadway rocking up ‘Mack The Knife’ in new video, voices character on Disney XD show ‘Motorcity’
by craig on May.05, 2012, under CD/DVD RELEASES, FUNNIES, LINKS, ROCK NEWS, TV ROCK NEWS, VIDEO
Dee Snider has evolved into a man of many projects. Besides fronting Twisted Sister and currently hosting a syndicated radio show (House of Hair), he recently was a contestant on 'Celebrity Apprentice', and has been in other reality shows. He's also directed horror movies and been in Broadway productions (Rock Of Ages). He channels the Broadway experience on his new album coming out this Tuesday (May 8th) called 'Dee Does Broadway.'
'Dee Does Broadway' finds Snider using his unique voice to tackle some of Broadway’s most famous standards, like “Cabaret,” “Luck Be a Lady” (from Guys and Dolls), and “Razzle Dazzle” (from Chicago). Dee Does Broadway features several special guest stars, including Broadway and television icon Bebe Neuwirth on the Damn Yankees song “Whatever Lola Wants,” Broadway legend Patti LuPone on a West Side Story Medley “Tonight/Somewhere,” pop icon Cyndi Lauper on Sweet Charity’s “Big Spender,” Clay Aiken of American Idol on the Guys and Dolls classic “Luck Be a Lady Tonight,” the stars of the Broadway hit musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert (Will Swenson, Tony Sheldon, and Nick Adams) on South Pacific’s “There Is Nothin’ Like A Dame,” Mark Wood of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra playing violin on the Phantom of the Opera ballad “Music Of The Night,” as well a special rendition of “The Joint Is Jumpin” from Ain’t Misbehavin’ with Dee’s oldest son, Jesse Blaze Snider. Songs are also featured from classic Broadway shows including Cabaret, Chicago, The Threepenny Opera, Anything Goes, and Sweeney Todd.
The new video for 'Mack the Knife' was directed by another of his sons, his son Cody Blue Snider. It starts off with a traditional version of the song, before ramping up and rocking out with none other than Mike Portnoy helping out on drums. Eric Nally of Foxy Shazam makes an appearance as the concert host, bringing on "Dean Schnider."
“This was the first time we had the opportunity to work together strictly as a director and an artist,” Cody Snider told Entertainment Weekly. “That could have made this a tumultuous shoot, but my father and I have so much mutual respect for one another that it was anything but that. Working with Dee was the most joyous part of the production for me, and I'm sure we'll continue working together until I am changing his diapers in-between takes"
Dee is giving his voice to the Duke of Detroit, a wheeling-dealing self-proclaimed king of the scrap heaps and junkyards in Disney XD's new animated series, Motorcity. Motorcity airs Mondays on Disney XD (9 ET/PT) and features the city of Detroit 150 years from now as both an oppressive utopia and an underground of freedom fighters, with a heavy dose of nostalgia from animator Chris Prynoski's own childhood of car shows with his father and working in a garage while in high school.

Prynoski commented on Snider's recurring role voicing the "slippery" character of the Duke of Detroit: "If it was like the Star Wars universe, KaneCo would be the Empire and the Duke of Detroit would be like Jabba the Hutt. He plays any angle if it suits his interests. He'll be an enemy of Kane, or he'll team up with him and be an enemy of the Burners." Upcoming guest stars include original Saturday Night Live cast member Laraine Newman, radio personality Richard Christy and Global RallyCross racer Stephan Verdier.
Dee's new autobiography 'Shut Up and Give Me The Mic' will be out the same day as the new album (May 8th) and he also has a role in the FEARnet.com show 'Hollison,' which was just picked up for a second season. Catch up on the show here: www.fearnet.com/hollison
