Rival Sons new album ‘Head Down’ out September 17, check out track sampler

The new album from Rival Sons, 'Head Down' will be released on September 17th on the good vibe Earache Records. The CD was produced once again by Grammy-nominated Dave Cobb (Jamie Johnson, Shotter Jennings) and Grammy-winning engineer Vance Powell (Jack White, The White Stripes, Kings Of Leon). The album was recorded in what is now the music capital of the U.S., Nashville, Tennessee, with the artwork created by Jason Holley.

'Head Down' track listing:
1. Keep On Swinging
2. Wild Animal
3. You Want To
4. Until the Sun Comes
5. Run From Revelation
6. Jordan
7. All The Way
8. The Heist
9. Three Fingers
10. Nava
11. Manifest Destiny Pt. 1
12. Manifest Destiny Pt. 2
13. True

Rival Sons frontman Jay Buchanan had this to say about the album title: "We took a lyric from one of the songs that exemplified the process of making the record. 'Head down' comes from the term 'Keep your head down and keep on swinging.' I thought it was fitting and it works perfectly with the album cover."

Guitarist Scott Holiday on how the band chose the artwork for the album: "I began searching for the right artist for our cover on the interwebs, just mulling around, and very quickly came across Jason Holley. I saw a couple of covers that he had done for Josh Ritter and Ray LaMontagne, which I loved. I was immediately taken aback by his aesthetic and style and felt he had a few pieces already done that I would be into using. I sent some of his images over to Jay and he had the same immediate feeling I did… Which is pretty rare. He could have been from anywhere in the world, but he just so happened to live about 30 minutes away from me, so I gave him a ring and we started talking. We sent him the record and discussed ideas that we felt reflected the music and process. He then created an original piece, painted in oil. The end result is pretty symbolic and interesting — something that, in my opinion, reflects the record beautifully."

Holiday previously stated about the musical direction of Rival Sons' new album, "Songs were once again written and recorded on the spot, allowing the listener to really peer in and catch a snapshot of the moment, and our immediate instincts. Most songs were captured in a few takes, not to mention plenty of first-takers. Pretty off the cuff and unadulterated. We have never had a wish to be predictable or sedentary with our music, and this record explores and supports that ethos pretty well. In other words, this record is not 'Pressure & Time', but delves into a bunch of other musical ideas and sounds. Much more of a 'long-form' record as a whole. Fist-pumpers, ass-shakers, foot-stompers, air guitaring/bassing/drummers, tear-jerkers, heart-string-pullers, and a few straight-up freakouts."

Scott Holiday and Robin Everhart talked with Barbara Caserta of Linea Rocks at Gods of Metal in Italy recently, check out the engaging interview, with talk of the new album, Led Zeppelin comparisons and more:

Rival Sons News: Pinkpop recap, new album news, Jay Buchanan benefit track for The Compound Studio

Rival Sons News: Pinkpop recap, new album news, Jay Buchanan benefit track for The Compound Studio

Rival Sons continue to do rock proud, as not only does the vibe and power of their music continue to shine through everywhere around the world, so does the absolute quality of the music and musicianship. It's no secret that I am a huge fan of this band, and that I will continue to support and back them until they are a huge headlining act in their homeland of the U.S. and beyond. They create a kinship with their music and I feel it like most of you do or at least will! The band is currently hitting all the major festivals in Europe, already having played Pinkpop, Rock im Park and Rock am Ring in Germany among others. They also just rocks some gigs opening for Guns N' Roses in the Netherlands and Germany, and their eagerly anticipated new album 'Head Down' is due in August.

Rival Sons rock the Download Festival this weekend (June 10) and continue with more European gigs up to July 21st.

'Head Down', the follow-up to the band's 2011 breakthrough album, Pressure & Time, was recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Dave Cobb and Grammy-winning engineer Vance Powell. The album is due to be released on Earache Records in late August.

Rival Sons guitarist Scott Holiday comments:

"We have officially completed and turned in our next full length record. We thought we might give ourselves a bit more time to work this time around, as opposed to the 20 days for Pressure & Time... BUT, it was even MORE crazy this time. Everything was finished in about the same amount of time (22 days), but this time we are giving much more music (a much longer record) - nearly twice that of P&T.

"Done in Nashville this time - amazing people, music, music scene, countryside, and some cool record shops. We re-enlisted our long-time producer and friend, Dave Cobb (Jamie Johnson, Secret Sisters, Shooter Jennings, and uh... Rival Sons), and this time we brought in the engineering and mix wizardry of one Mr. Vance Powell (Jack White, Dead Weather, Kings of Leon).

"Songs were once again written and recorded on the spot, allowing the listener to really peer in and catch a snapshot of the moment, and our immediate instincts. Most songs were captured in a few takes, not to mention plenty of first-takers. Pretty off the cuff and unadulterated. We have never had a wish to be predictable or sedentary with our music, and this record explores and supports that ethos pretty well. In other words, this record is not P&T, but delves into a bunch of other musical ideas and sounds. Much more of a 'long-form' record as a whole. Fist-pumpers, ass-shakers, foot-stompers, air guitaring/bassing/drummers, tear-jerkers, heart-string-pullers, and a few straight up freak outs. That's all I'll say for now. Due out late this August."

The Compound Studio in Signal Hill, CA. is the recording studio with a buddy’s-house vibe and matter-of-factly professional sound. Anthony "Antoine" Arvizu is the studio owner and manager, recording and producing most of the artists that come to the studio for that "Compound Sound." Like so many studios, The Compound Studio has been digging deep into debt for a few years now and they had considered closing the doors for good, then word got around and the idea of creating a compilation record to raise funds and raise awareness came together. Some artists and producers of note who have worked at the studio include: Mavis Staples, Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) Ryan Bingham, Marc Ford (The Black Crowes, Ben Harper, Booker T. Jones), Ikey Owens (Jack White, The Mars Volta, Free Moral Agents), The Cold War Kids and now Jay Buchanan of Rival Sons.

Jay Buchanan contributes a fantastic track, 'Rose In Your Teeth' on 'S.O.S. (Save Our Studio) A Benefit Album' by Compound Records. You can hear the track here and order the 49 track album to help keep the studio alive www.thecompoundstudio.com

Rival Sons unveil new album title and artwork

by on Jun.01, 2012, under CD/DVD RELEASES, ROCK NEWS, ROCK TOUR DATES

One of my favorite bands of late, Rival Sons have unveiled the title and cover of their new album. It will be called 'Head Down' and was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee with Grammy-nominated producer Dave Cobb (Jamie Johnson, Shooter Jennings) and Grammy-wining engineer Vance Powell (Jack White, The White Stripes, Kings Of Leon).

The artwork was created by Jason Holley (Josh Ritter, Ray LaMontagne). Frontman Jay Buchanan talked about the new album: "We took a lyric from one of the songs that exemplified the process of making the record. Head Down comes from the term ‘Keep your head down and keep on swinging’. I thought it was fitting and it works perfectly with the album cover.

Guitarist Scott Holiday says of the album artwork: “I began searching for the right artist for our cover on the interwebs, just mulling around, and very quickly came across Jason Holley. Rival Sons are hitting all the major European rock festivals, as well as two dates opening for Guns N' Roses this month. We need a major tour of the U.S. from Rival Sons, let's hope we get it before the end of 2012. Keep kicking ass guys!

Teenage Cancer Trust highlights: Steve Winwood, Roger Daltrey, Ron Wood, Rival Sons-Micheal Miley and Paul McCartney (video)

Many of Rock's Royalty got together at London's Royal Albert Hall to help kids fight cancer. The Teenage Cancer Trust began Wednesday and Thursday night (Mar. 28 & 29) with an all star line up of rock greats. Teenage Cancer Trust aims to ensure that every young person with cancer and their family receive the best possible care and professional support throughout their cancer journey. The likes of concert series organizer Roger Daltrey of the Who, Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, Steve Winwood, Paul Weller and Michael Miley of one of the new breed of great rockers, Rival Sons were all part of the benefit on Wednesday night. Miley lived a rockers dream by getting to play percussion for some of the show! Paul McCartney headlined last night (Mar. 29), and the performance marked the former Beatle‘s first at the famed venue since he participated in the all-star tribute show for his late band mate George Harrison in 2002.

This event also had its share of star power. McCartney was joined by Daltrey, Ronnie Wood and ex-Jam frontman Paul Weller during the show’s encore for a rendition of the Fab Four’s 'Get Back.' Wood also made a guest appearance at the previous night’s Teenage Cancer Trust concert, at which Daltrey and Weller served as co-headliners.

As for McCartney, he played nearly 30 songs in all, offering up a set that spanned his entire career, from the early Beatles smash “All My Loving,” to “My Valentine,” the first single from his new standards album, Kisses on the Bottom.

The Teenage Cancer Trust benefits continue tonight through Tuesday (Apr. 3) with other artists as well as a night of comedy.

Here's some highlights:

The drummer for a Marshall of Rock favorite, Rival Sons, Michael Miley talked about joining Daltrey, Winwood and Ronnie Wood on stage in London.

Commented Miley: "Are you kidding me? Royal Albert Hall? Roger Daltrey, Steve Winwood, Ronnie Wood?! I got to sit in with them??!! Am I dreaming? What an experience. What a show. All to benefit young people battling cancer. God bless those kids. And God bless Roger for putting together these concerts. I am very thankful to have been part of it."

Rival Sons wrapped up the final show of their U.K. tour with Black Stone Cherry immediately before the Teenage Cancer Trust show, and is currently in Europe for a number of headlining dates.

Th band recently recorded their next album at Honey Pye Studios in Nashville, Tennessee with Grammy-nominated producer Dave Cobb, who has worked on all three previous releases from the band, and Grammy-winning engineer Vance Powell. The album is due later this year from Earache Records.
