Marshall of Rock Top 50 tracks of 2013: 50 to 26

Happy New Year everyone! 2012 was a really good year for ROCK, with comeback albums and tracks from the likes of Van Halen, KISS, Aerosmith, Joe Walsh, ZZ Top, Soundgarden, L.A. Guns and so many more. Here's my Top 50 tracks for 2012, kicking off with numbers 50 to 26. Thanks for checking out MarshallofRock.com, and all the best to everyone for an even more rockin' 2013!!

50. Joe Walsh - Analog Man - Joe Walsh released his first solo album in 20 years in 2012, and the title track checks in at number 50. A solid solo return from Joe!

49. ZZ Top - Gotsta Get Paid - After delays due to producer Rick Rubin, ZZ Top released their latest album 'La Futura' in 2012. It featured this track at number 49.

48. The Offspring - Days Go By - Vocalist Dexter Holland just celebrated his 47th birthday on December 29th and sounds as relevant as ever on the title track from the Offspring's latest album that was released this past June.

47. Volbeat - Still Counting - The Copenhagen, Denmark rockers had a mega successful 2012, with this cut at #47, one of my favorites from the 'Beyond Hell/Above Heaven' album. The band will take their fusion of rock and roll, heavy metal, punk and rockabilly back out on the road in early 2013 with openers Danko Jones

46. Chevelle - Face To the Floor - The Illinois rockers really broke out big time in 2012, with massive success with multiple tracks from their 'Hats Off To The Bull' album.

45. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Last of A Dyin' Breed - Title track from the latest Lynyrd Skynyrd album, which is great from start to finish.

44. Linkin Park - Burn It Down - It was hard to escape this track form the 'Living Things' album as Linkin Park continued their many years of massive success with this track.

43. L.A. Guns - You Better Not Love Me - A quality return to the sleazy, hard rocking sound that made the band famous. The band released their first new studio album in 7 years, 'Hollywood Forever', and it lives up to some of the best work the band has ever done. L.A. Guns recently amicably replaced guitarist Stacey Blades with ex-Sea Hags/Arcade guitarist Frankie Wilsey. Look for the band to be back on the road for extensive touring in 2013.

42. Lynch Mob - Slow Drag - A great track from the Lynch Mob E.P. 'Sound Mountain Sessions'. The status of the band is in limbo as of now however, with guitarist George Lynch committed to the T&N project with Jeff Pilson, Mick Brown and Brian Tichy, as well as another power trio project with Dug Pinnick of King's X and Ray Luzier (Korn, Army of Anyone). Vocalist Oni Logan is currently part of the Dio Disciples and bassist Robbie Crane has left the band, so time will tell if we'll get any more new music from these guys in the future, but this track kicks ass!

41. Theory Of A Deadman - Hurricane - Tyler Connolly and Theory Of a Deadman continued their years of success into 2012 with mutiple tracks released from their 'The Truth Is...' album. This is my favorite from the album.

40. Fozzy - Sandpaper - Chris Jericho and Fozzy upped the ante in 2012, getting what is probably the most airplay and recognition in the band's history with this track from their 'Sin And Bones' album. The track features guest vocal from M Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold and rightfully has a place on my Top 50!

39. Van Halen - She's The Woman - Van Halen triumphantly returned in 2012, and while this is not my favorite track on their 'A Different Kind of Truth' album, it warrants the #39 spot on my top tracks of 2012.

38. Bruce Springsteen - Rocky Ground - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band delivered with their 'Wrecking Ball' album, and this track conveyed the message that rock musicians idealism can still and should still have a place in music. I know it does on my list of top tracks.

37. Shinedown - Bully - Shinedown's 'Amaryllis' album is another awesome collection of songs from the band, and this anti-bullying message rocker shows that this band cares about people in a sincere way, while thoroughly rocking!

36. Black Stone Cherry - In My Blood - One of my favorite bands of late, BSC continues to make inroads in rock by not only playing anywhere at anytime to gain new fans, but with great tracks garnering significant airplay. The decision to collaborate with a few outside writers on their last album 'Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea' payed off big time. The band's album was released in 2011, but this track garnered the majority of its airplay in 2012.

35. Adler - The One That You Hated - Steven Adler and his new band have brought an album that is one of the most surprising releases of 2012. 'Back From The Dead' is top to bottom a fantastic album that will carry well into 2013 with other tracks released from the offering. "The One That You Hated' just plain rocks, as does Steven's new bandmates: vocalist Jacob Bunton, guitarist Lonny Paul and bassist Johnny Martin!

34. The Treatment - Nothing To Lose But Our Minds - Another of my personal favorite new bands, these young lads from the U.K. made major inroads in 2012 with great exposure as the opening act on the 'The Tour' with Motley Crue and KISS in the U.S. I expect big things from The Treatment and really think with their musical ability, attitude and charisma, they are going to continue on an upward rise in the U.S.! Check out their album 'This Might Hurt'!

33. Aerosmith - Legendary Child - This was the first track released from the highly anticipated Aerosmith album 'Music From Another Dimension!' The track showcases the unity and sound that only these guys can get when all together. Great track from a great American legendary rock band!

32. Tremonti - You Waste Your Time - Mark Tremonti of Alter Bridge and Creed brought a solo album full of serious metal in 2012. This was the lead track. Tremonti will be continuing to tour in early 2013 with Mark's buddy Wolfgang Van Halen on bass.

31. Dead Sara - Weatherman - The Los Angeles rockers featuring Emily Armstrong (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Sean Friday (drums, backing vocals), Siouxsie Medley (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Chris Null (bass guitar, backing vocals) are one of the most exciting not only new female fronted band, but any band of 2012. I only mention the female part, because vocalist Emily Armstrong is compelling, powerful and is poised to lead this band to the next level and influence a new generation of female rockers. Exciting new band, I can't wait to see their progression in the years to come.

30. Foo Fighters - These Days - A track that got most of it's airplay in 2012, I had to get some Foo Fighters on my Top 50! 'Wasting Light' was one of my top albums of 2011, and it was so good it placed tracks on my year end cuts this year. I'm gonna miss no new Foo in 2013, but they'll be back in 2014!

29. Stone Sour - Gone Soverign/Absolute Zero - Band leader Corey Taylor of Stone Sour continues to be a respected leader in the rock world, seemingly doing no wrong at the moment. 'Absolute Zero' recently went to #1 on the rock tracks charts, but these two tracks are meant to be played together. Stone Sour will be touring with Papa Roach in the U.S. in early 2013.

28. Aranda - Satisfied - The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma rockers bring solid rock chops with feeling in my #28 track. Dameon Aranda, Gabe Aranda, and Mike Walker have delivered 'Stop The World', an album of great music, with this track leading the way.

27. Black Keys - Lonely Boy - The Black Keys were seemingly the golden boys of 2012, with doors opening for their talent, and airplay for their killer tracks. Black Keys are going to be around for a long time and look to be not only the critic's favorites, but also favorites of the masses.

26. Soundgarden - Been Away Too Long - Soundgarden returned in 2012 with the new album 'King Animal', and this track went to number one concurrently on both the active and mainstream rock charts. The band will continue to tour in 2013 and hopefully they will be around for more than one new album and tour.

Rock Picks of the Week Ketchup: Black Keys, Van Halen, Foo Fighters, Theory of a Deadman, Eve To Adam, Art of Dying

Since my Rock Picks of the Week have continually turned into the Rock Pick of the month or every three weeks, I must make a commitment to being more diligent about catching up. So here is my Ketchup. Some of these tracks have been out awhile, but I have to give them a pick.

Black Keys 'Gold On the Ceiling'
Black Keys have had another massively successful track with this one, as it's currently the #1 track on the alternative charts, top 5 at adult rock, top 10 at active rock and top 20 on the rock charts. The Keys recently performed it on the MTV Movie Awards as part of a tribute to Johnny Depp, who joined the band on guitar.

The Keys recently filmed an episode of the Travel Channel’s 'No Reservations' with host Anthony Bourdain and have shot a cameo, in full ponytails, for a Comedy Central series 'Workaholics.' They also will continue touring in 2012 with some big time gigs including as headliners at the inaugural Firefly Festival in Dover on July 20-22, New York’s Catalpa Festival on July 28th, Lollapalooza in Chicago on Aug. 3rd, and Montreal’s Osheaga Festival on Aug. 5th. Then they'll head overseas for a few European festival dates, followed by a return to the U.S. in October for a brief West Coast swing a and a gig at the recently announced Austin City Limits festival. They'll finish out 2012 with tours of Australia and Europe.

They are also worthy of a tribute album called 'Black On Blues,' out July 17th, which features such artists as Iggy Pop, Leslie West, Ginger Baker of Cream, Dave Davies of The Kinks and more.

Van Halen 'She's The Woman'

I was glad to see that the band actually put out a video behind this one, compiled from rehearsal and concert footage. I like almost everyone thought the worst when VH pulled those 30 dates from their current tour schedule, but was relieved that they just "simply bit off more than we could chew," acording to David Lee Roth in his recent video message addressing the situation.

Van Halen‘s former bassist Michael Anthony heard DLR's explanation for the postponed dates, but he isn’t quite so sure that is the main reason. Their was a report with tour insiders saying the band members "hate each other" and are "arguing like mad." Sammy Hagar weighed in saying, "I'm surprised it took this long. I predicted this was going to happen a lot sooner … They’re hard people to get along with, those brothers."

Anthony told Classic Rock Magazine: "Everybody’s got their own opinions. Who knows? To me it sounds kinda interesting – if you say you’re tired and you want to recharge your batteries you don’t put 30 shows on sale. If I were a fan I’d be going, 'Why are you putting 30 shows on sale?'"

Anthony also offered a possible explanation for why three days lapsed between the announced schedule changes and Roth’s public statement about them: "Maybe that’s the three days you take to come up with your story?" Despite his assessment, he had kind words for the group. "I wish them well — they put out a great album, they’re a great live band, they always have been," he says.

Would he ever consider rejoining the band? "I don’t know. As time goes on now, less and less. Eddie’s got his son up with him now. The circumstance would have to be right. I was always the never-say-never guy, but I don’t really think about it any more...Chickenfoot, my relationship with those guys is great."

Van Halen have since announced more tour dates in 2013, as well as a tour of Japan. There is also speculation that the guys will be rocking the 2013 Super Bowl. Look for the next single from 'A Different Kind Of Truth' to be 'Stay Frosty.'

Foo Fighters, who have become one of my favorite bands EVER, released yet another song from the 'Wasting Light' album. 'Bridge Burning' follows the lead of all the previous tracks released, getting significant airplay. The Foos haven't released an official video, but here's a video interpretation of the song from the band's 2011 'This Video Sucks Contest; directed by Will Doyle & Richard Peete.

The Foos hit the Marcus Ampithetre in Milwaukee, WI on June 28, before hitting festivals in Italy, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Belgium and Netherlands during the month of July. They stop in Belfast, ND on August 21st for a one off U.S. date, then return to the UK for two gigs in late August. The band will wrap up their never ending tour on September 22nd at DeLuna Fest in Pensocola, Florida. Dave Grohl will then focus on completing his Sound City Studios documentary, which I cannot wait to see! Spin Magazine recently brought forth why Dave Grohl is the 'nicest guy in rock.' Check out the reasons why here: www.spin.com

Theory of a Deadman's 'Hurricane' is another great track from the band's latest album 'The Truth Is...'. It has already gone top 5 on the rock tracks, as the band continues building on their past success thus far. Theory of a Deadman will be headlining on tour for the rest of the summer. Check out a date near you here: www.theoryofadeadman.com

Frontman Tyler Connolly recently did a funny little experiment in New York's Time Square called 'You Don't Know Me.' Check out both parts:

New York rockers Eve To Adam are up next with their track 'Reach.' While it didn't have the "reach" I would have hoped as far as radio airplay goes, it did further the band's reach and exposure in a positive way. It comes from the album 'Banquet For A Starving Dog', and is a positive, uplifting song. You can 'Reach,' you just gotta believe, and I believe in this band!

Eve To Adam recently ended a run touring with Creed at the Fillmore on May 31 in Detroit, Michigan, and their currently at home working on new material and preparing for summer shows while promoting their new single, a cover of the Alice Cooper classic, 'School's Out.' The single is now available for digital download and has been getting a very positive reaction from critics and fans alike. The track was even debuted on June 5th by Alice Cooper on his radio show! Get the song here on itunes

Canadian rockers Art of Dying are back in the rock picks of the week with their latest track 'Sorry.' It's another great track from the 'Vices and Virtues' album. The Art of Dying is my life to live. Vocalist Jonny Hetherington and the guys bring quality rock, and I expect continued growth from this band in the future!

Recently we had the chance to get into the studio with producer Dan Donegan from Disturbed to lay down an acoustic version of "Sorry". We've been so touched by all of the 'Sorry profile pics' over the last few months that we decided to make a video for the acoustic version of the song featuring our biggest fans. Thanks for making this video possible, we couldn't have done it without you!

Rock Picks of the Week: Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction, Furyon, My Darkest Days

by on Jan.31, 2012, under LINKS, ROCK NEWS, ROCK PICKS, ROCK TOUR DATES, VIDEO

Foo Fighters 'These Days' is the third single to be taken from the band's seventh album 'Wasting Light', which came out in April last year. The video was just released and compiles onstage action and behind-the-scenes footage of the group’s recent arena tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Foo Fighters will continue to be busy in 2012, having to attend multiple award shows all over the world, to undoubtedly collect a big-time amount of hardware for the 'Wasting Light' album. They all had better build a new trophy display case to fit them all.

Dave Grohl has also been jamming with various rockers who also recorded at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles for a documentary on the legendary studio. Ratt's Stephen Pearcy and Warren DeMartini have jammed with Grohl, as have Slipknot's Corey Taylor. REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin has also revealed that he will be a part of the project as well. Nirvana recorded the legendary 'Nevermind' album at Sound City.

Foo Fighters recently confirmed they are planning to head into the studio to record a new album this year. Despite only releasing 'Wasting Light' last year, frontman Dave Grohl revealed on the band's official blog that he has already started compiling ideas for new songs.

He wrote: "We're not finished yet. There are still more shows to play, more songs to write, more albums to record, for years to come. I mean if you would have told me 17 years ago that in 2012 I would be writing songs for our eighth studio album... well."

Foo Fighters will perform live February 12th at the Grammy Awards on CBS. They are up for 6 Grammys, including album of the year.

Red Hot Chili Peppers 'Look Around' is the third single from off the band's album 'I’m With You', and the next Rock Pick of the Week. The video is moves from room to room, showing each band member in a different setting, and of course a shot of Flea in his tighty-whities. Frontman Anthony Kiedis recently underwent surgery to remove a crushed sesamoid bone and correct a detached flexor tendon in his foot and is expected to make a full recovery, but it caused the upcoming tour dates to be moved, in many cases to months later. Check out the latest tour dates and news at www.redhotchilipeppers.com

Jane's Addiction's 'Underground' is the up, and the latest release from 'The Great Escape Artist.' I have posted the tame version of the video, but the band wants you to check out the sexier, explicit video for 'Underground' at www.playboy.com

Jane's Addiction have played sporatic gigs in support of the album, but will kick off their 'Theatre of the Escapists' tour on Feb. 22nd in St. Louis. The band will play legendary concert halls on this upcoming tour, with many venues hosting Jane's Addiction for the first time. Check out tour dates here.

Up next is a new band from the UK that really rocks! I like their vibe, I like their direction, and I like their brand of no bulshit rock and roll. Frontiers Records is excited to announce the Worldwide release of Furyon's debut album 'Gravitas' on March 23rd in Europe and March 27th in North America.

Furyon is a new band from the UK who like nothing more than to challenge expectations. Raised on a diet of heavy metal, prog, and classic rock, Furyon mix all these components for a truly unique and contemporary sound. Delivering huge rock radio friendly songs, with technically challenging, yet infectiously catchy musicianship. Dedicated to one sole purpose, making hard hitting songs that will stand the test of time. "Our music is good songs with touches of intelligence" says singer Matt Mitchell, "There are a many different moods that come out from this album and all the songs have meaning and substance. Heavy and Melodic! That is what Furyon and this album 'Gravitas' is about".

What separates Furyon from the crowd is the sheer quality of their musicianship. Boasting two truly world class guitarists in the form of Chris Green and Pat "The Shred" Heath, Furyon have few peers when it comes to the quality of their iconic riffs, and jaw dropping solos. Backing them up is one of the tightest rhythm sections the rock world has to offer with the awesome combination of Lee Farmery, and Alex (Nickel) Bowen. Leading from the front is the outstanding vocal versatility of Matt Mitchell, whose emotion drenched voice effortlessly moves between melodic and crunchingly heavy. "We really have been inspired by many bands over the time (as all musicians and writers are)" continues Matt, "but for this album inspirations from bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Tool, Mastodon, Alter Bridge and Iron Maiden spring to mind".

In 2009, after a sell out tour, and accompanying EP, Furyon set about the serious business of writing their debut album. The early demo's reached the ears of US producer Rick Beato (Shinedown, Fozzy), and a powerful and symbiotic relationship was formed. "Our hook up with Rick Beato was through Kip Winger" recalls Matt. "We toured with Winger on their Karma tour and we had spoken with Kip about the band Shinedown and how we liked their productions. Kip hooked us up with Rick and to our delight he was interested in doing the album. Rick is a truly great Producer and writer".

Released independently on a low profile and later covermounted on Metal Hammer UK, 'Gravitas' has now been picked up by Frontiers Records and the world will know all about Furyon soon!

Canadian rock band My Darkest Days have returned with their new single ‘Casual Sex’ off of their upcoming sophomore album, which is due this coming spring.
My Darkest Days consist of frontman Matt Walst, lead guitarist Sal Costa, bassist Brendan McMillian, keyboardist Reid Henry and drummer Doug Oliver. The song ‘Casual Sex’ features guitar work from virtuoso axeman John 5 (Rob Zombie / Marilyn Manson), and is produced by Joey Moi and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Linkin Park).

The upcoming album follows their 2010 self-titled debut, which sold more than 200,000 copies. That album featured their hit ‘Porn Star Dancing,’ which had Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and guitar work from Black Label Society’s Zakk Wylde on it. Look for a brief headlining club tour with Veer Union supporting at the end of March and first week of April.

The band shares the same management as Nickelback, thus the synergy as My Darkest Days will be opening for Nickelback, Bush and Seether on their North American tour from April 10 - June 26th. It looks like My Darkest Days are going to continue their streak as one of the hardest working rock band out there.

by on Jan.05, 2012, under ROCK NEWS

Stephen Pearcy and Warren DeMartini of Ratt recently recorded a song for a project headed up by Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana). Pearcy said, "We'll let [Dave] tell you about when he's ready, kidz. Not for a RATT record."

Pearcy also talked about the collaboration on his Twitter account, writing, "Thing is it's a way cool thing of Dave. We're just privileged to b a part of that. Next Ratt!"

Ratt drummer Bobby Blotzer announced that the band was writing and recording with plans to release a new album in the spring of 2012.

Foo Fighters will tour Japan this March, and in 2012 will be basking in all the adulation and awards they will be receiving for their amazing 'Wasting Light' album.

Pearcy's new solo album, "Sucker Punch", is due later this year. The singer previously stated about the CD, "It's going to be a brutally honest record and I think my fans want that from me at this point."
