WhoCares featuring Ian Gillan, Tony Iommi & Friends to release 2CD set

Reuniting for the first time since their collaboration on Black Sabbath’s 1983 Born Again album, Deep Purple´s Ian Gillan and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi took everybody by surprise in 2011 when they released the charity singles,'Out Of My Mind' and 'Holy Water.'

For the recording of these songs, the two rock legends called a few friends, asking for some “help.” Jason Newsted (Metallica), the late Jon Lord (Deep Purple, 1941-2012), Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden), and Linde Lindström (HIM) completed the supergroup WhoCares.

Now, 'Out Of My Mind' and 'Holy Water' will be featured in a special 2 disc set of rarities and recordings culled from the careers of Iommi and Gillan. The WhoCares double CD will be released in North American on August 28th through Eagle Rock Entertainment.

Amongst the tracks are the two original WhoCares songs, Deep Purple’s unreleased studio jam Dick Pimple, a song from Repo Depo (a band Ian Gillan formed before the Deep Purple reunion) which never released an official song before this CD. Also included is 'Zero The Hero,' from the aforementioned Black Sabbath Born Again release (which is the only album to feature Gillan on lead vocals), as well as two unreleased songs from Tony Iommi featuring Glenn Hughes.

The Out Of My Mind and Holy Water singles were a joyful and inspired moment from two musicians with nothing to prove, willing to support music where music is considered a luxury. The spark to bring Iommi and Gillan in a studio together again was to finance the rebuilding of a music school in Armenia they had visited together on various occasions in past years.

“As I said once in the song Razzle Dazzle, it’s a real fine line between an orgy of destruction and a wonderful time,’” states Gillan. “The destruction of conformity in this case: some of these pieces never really fitted into their contemporary program and got sidelined or forgotten, and some of the album tracks never had much exposure. As the track listing for this album came together, I noticed many of the titles had character similarities: a combination of freshness as they finally felt the sun on their backs and rebellion in a ‘yeah told you so’ kind of way. And that adds up to a wonderful time and more money for the music school we are building in Armenia."

“The ad-hoc benefit WhoCares band,” continues Gillan, “was a band put together by Tony Iommi and myself on a flight home from Yerevan, where we’d been deeply humbled by the honor and expectation bestowed upon us. Well that’s it really, in a nutshell, so to speak, what more can I say? It’s all there in the music.”

The release of this very special 2 CD set is a must for all Deep Purple fans and fans of hard rock.

Tony Iommi interview for ‘Iron Man’ book release wins a ‘Telly Award’, Black Sabbath hometown gig sells out

Tony Iommi interview for ‘Iron Man’ book release wins a ‘Telly Award’, Black Sabbath hometown gig sells out

Last November Tony Iommi released his autobiography, 'Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath,' and reporter Damian was in Ridgewood, New Jersey to cover the signing. At the time Damian produced a three and a half minute video which had interview segments with both Tony himself, as well as folks who were waiting in line to see him. That segment has now won the 'Telly Award' in the category of 'Live Event (segments) for Internet Broadcast.'

Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and web commercials, videos and films. The Telly Awards annually showcases the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world. The Telly Awards is a widely known and highly respected national and international competition and receives over 11,000 entries annually from all 50 states and many foreign countries.

This is the first time they’ve expanded their awards to include internet video and to celebrate, the full interview segment he did with Tony back on that day has now been released. The winning video segment released last November only has bits from that. Tony talks about a possible "new album" with Ian Gillan, which is interesting considering the news from earlier this week about the WhoCares album being released. This interview was also done just about eight weeks before he publicly disclosed he had cancer.

Black Sabbath's special concert next month in their hometown of Birmingham, England, serving as a warm-up for their June 10 headlining set at the UK's Download Festival, is officially sold out. The intimate homecoming show will take place May 19th at the O2 Academy, and will mark the group's first performance in Birmingham in 13 years. A portion of the proceeds raised by the concert will be donated to the Help for Heroes charity.

The announcement for the Birmingham gig only mentioned Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, so obviously Bill Ward still has not worked out the contractual differences to get back in the fold. Ward still has not been offered a contract that he deemed "signable."

The group currently has one other upcoming concert on its schedule, a U.S. date at the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago on August 3rd. The band will finish work on their album following that headlining appearance.

Tony Iommi Autobiography release date & WHOCARES with Ian Gillen single out now (video)

Tony Iommi Autobiography release date & WHOCARES with Ian Gillen single out now (video)

Tony Iommi's official autobiography, Iron Man: My Life In Black Sabbath And Beyond, will be released on October 13th in the UK (via Simon & Schuster) and November 1st in the US (by Da Capo Press).

"Iron Man chronicles the story of both pioneering guitarist Tony Iommi and legendary band Black Sabbath. Iron Man reveals the man behind the icon yet still captures Iommi’s humor, intelligence, and warmth. He speaks honestly and unflinchingly about his rough-and-tumble childhood, the accident that almost ended his career, his failed marriages, personal tragedies, battles with addiction, band mates, famous friends, newfound daughter, and the ups and downs of his life as an artist. Everything associated with hard rock happened to Black Sabbath first: the drugs, the debauchery, the drinking, the dungeons, the pressure, the pain, the conquests, the company men, the contracts, the combustible drummer, the critics, the comebacks, the singers, the Stonehenge set, the music, the money, the madness, the metal."

--WHOCARES the musical project spearheaded by legendary Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan and Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi: has released its debut digital single via Eagle Rock Entertainment. The physical CD/DVD single will be made available in Europe on May 24 through earMUSIC and June 27th in North America via Eagle Rock Entertainment.

The single features two brand new studio tracks "Out Of My Mind" and "Holy Water", which will raise funds for the rebuilding of a music school in Gyumri, Armenia. The 2 Song - CD single will also contain the video clip of "Out Of My Mind" and a 40-minute documentary that shows Gillan's and Iommi's involvement with the Armenia cause over the years.
Speaking to Armenia's Mediamax news agency, Gillan was asked what the experience of working with Iommi again was like compared to their previous collaboration. "It was great to work with Tony again," Gillan replied. "He is very easy to write with and as a singer I know exactly where he's going. It wasn't dramatic, just friendly and professional."
He added, "We hope to do it again sometime in the not-too-distant future. It wasn't like the last experience with Black Sabbath; that was a band and an album totally different."

When asked how the inspiration for the song "Out Of My Mind" came out right after he visiting Armenia in October 2009, Ian said, "Well, normally... people like us who work with bands write the bits that we play. In this case, with 'Out of My Mind', Tony presented the entire musical idea and I wrote what I sing over the top, or along with it, if you prefer. The second track of the Who Cares single, 'Holy Water', was a bit different as I wrote that with Steve Morse (Deep Purple) and Tony was gracious enough to play guitar on it."

Both Gillan and Iommi have spent a lot of time in Armenia, fallen in love with the country and the people and have dedicated a lot of work to a nation still shocked after the earthquake that struck Armenia on December 7, 1988.
Besides the collaboration of Gillan and Iommi, who have worked together before on the Sabbath album "Born Again", Jon Lord ("Mr. Hammond", partner with Gillan on all the Deep Purple classics), Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain, ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and HIM guitarist player Mikko "Linde" Lindström are also featured on the two new songs.

Commented Gillan: "The idea came as Tony and I flew back from Yerevan together after being inspired by the enthusiasm of everyone there to get this thing done. It was brilliant working with Tony again after all these years; he makes life easy for a singer. The other guys need no introduction, do they?! Added Iommi: "Some twenty years ago when the call came, I thought, well at least I've helped, but it was going to Armenia and seeing the actual devastation caused by the earthquake that really made me realize that funds were still needed. Despite all the money that was raised last time, here was a music school doing their best, forgotten, in basic tin sheds. After the warmth and honor bestowed upon us during our visit, we just had to help make a difference and get the school rebuilt. And what better way than to hook up with some of rock's greatest players and my old mate Ian, both an honor and a pleasure."
"Out Of My Mind" recording lineup: Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) - Guitar, Ian Gillan (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath) - Vocals, Jason Newsted (Metallica, Voivod, Flotsam And Jetsam) - Bass, Nicko Mcbrain (Iron Maiden) - Drums, Jon Lord (Deep Purple) - Keyboards, Mikko "Linde" Lindström (HIM) - Guitar.
