The Cro-Mags issue statement after former bassist’s attack during CBGB Festival

The Cro-Mags have issued a statement following former bassist Harley Flanagan’s maniacal attack on current band members during New York’s CBGB’s Festival, which caused part of it to be cancelled. Flanagan attacked members of the band’s current lineup and stabbed at least two people. He sustained a broken leg during his assault and was changed with second-degree assault and carrying a concealed weapon while he waited for medical attention in hospital.

Police cancelled the rest of the event in Webster Hall. Cro-Mags frontman John Joseph told the audience: “You can thank Harley Flanagan for ruining the night for everyone.” Event organisers added: “Live music can be incredibly uplifting, empowering and positive. We don’t feel the actions of one person should overshadow four amazing days and nights of events.”

Flanagan, one of the founders of The Cro-Mags, slashed two members of the band with a knife in the VIP area of the Big Apple’s Webster Hall. He was arrested and charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

“They think they’re going to play my fuckin’ music that I helped write?” Flanagan allegedly yelled before stabbing William Berario and Michael Couls, the latter being the band’s current bassist.

The Cro-Mags’ statement reads as follows:

“We as a band are truly sorry for the way it all turned out in every regard, even the ex-member whose family is now affected by his choices.

“Our prayers go out to them as well as Mike C, and the others who were hurt, but it was ‘his’ choice to come to our concert with a hunting knife, standing by our dressing-room door.

“Who knows what his actual intent was, obviously he wasn’t there with it to cut bread for a peace offering as he was heard saying outside he was putting an end to us playing without him. Let’s move on now and stop the trash-talking.

“Keep that PMA (positive mental attitude) – that’s what we are all about.”
