Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry made a surprise appearance on American Idol Thursday (Mar. 22) to celebrate Tyler’s birthday. Host Ryan Seacrest mentioned that Steven’s birthday is coming up, and that the show had a special surprise for him.
Joe then lead the contestants and the audience in singing “Happy Birthday.” Tyler will turn 64 on Monday.
Before launching into the song with his guitar, Perry told Tyler “I couldn’t decide what to get you for your birthday this year so this will have to do.”
Tyler appeared to get choked up by the honor as he was hugged by fellow Idol judges Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson. Perry gave Tyler a hug, and Seacrest asked Joe if he knew how old Steven was, and he replied, “He’s about a day older than me.”
Tyler added, “I’m a Rip Van Winkle, so I’m told, I’m much too young to be this old,” Steven riffed, and explained, “Lyric time for the new album.”
