Forbes Magazine has released their top earners in music list for 2012 and former Pink Floyd mainman Roger Waters earned more than any other rock musician in 2012. His $88 million was the second-biggest earner overall, with only Dr. Dre bringing in more bank ($110 million)

Dre made the majority (around $100 million) from a business deal related to his beats headphones, but Waters’ income was almost entirely from his Wall world tour. The $158 million came from 63 concerts. Waters has recently announced more open-air Wall shows including one in London next year, so he could quite possibly make next year’s list.

Also in the top 20 were rock acts, Elton John ($80 million), U2 ($78 million), Bon Jovi ($60 million), Paul McCartney ($57 million), Foo Fighters ($47 million) and the Red Hot Chili Peppers ($39 million).

Forbes compiled the list from data available between May 2011 and May 2012, including record sales, touring, endorsement deals and other ventures minus management fees, legals costs and tax.

Touring income remains the biggest earner for most big-name musicians. Gary Bongiovianni, editor of trade magazine Pollstar, says: “The concert business had another solid year as both artists and promoters used more caution in trying to achieve their objectives.” But he added: “The good seats for major artists continue to be priced at a premium.”
