Metallica are celebrating Record Store Day by taking a huge leap back in time to their humble beginnings. The band’s 1982 demo “No Life ’til Leather” will be released on April 18 as a limited edition cassette at your favorite independent record store and Metallica.com!
It will be an an exact duplication of the original. “Twelve people will be able to play it, but everybody else will be able to hold it in their hands and, uh, have a great time with it,” drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone with a laugh. The band will release the cassette on Record Store Day before expanded CD and vinyl editions arrive this summer. This is the first time any of their demos will have been officially released.
During this period, the band included vocalist-guitarist James Hetfield, lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), bassist Ron McGovney and an 18 year old Ulrich on drums. The band has remastered the original tapes for the reissue, keeping the mix intact. The artwork has been made from Ulrich’s own copy and will feature the Danish drummer’s handwriting.
The release is part of a new series of upcoming reissues on Metallica’s own label (Blackened Recordings). The band own the master recordings to their catalog, and are planning further releases of unreleased material in the future.
