On Monday night, Paul McCartney played New York’s legendary Apollo Theater as part of Sirius XM’s 20 millionth subscriber bash. The concert was broadcast on Sirius XM as the former Beatle cruised through a career-spanning set list, opening with “Magical Mystery Tour” and proceeding straight into “Jet.” He offered staples like “Band on the Run” and “Maybe I’m Amazed” as well as early Beatles material such as “One After 909” and “I’m Looking Through You,” plus a cover of the Marvin Gaye tune “Hitch Hike.” McCartney even pulled out the holiday classic “Wonderful Christmastime,” complete with a backing youth choir, before doing the second and final encore that included “Yesterday” and “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise),” which segued into “The End.”

In other Macca news, he will play an intimate lunchtime show at the 100 Club in London on Friday, December 17. The 100 Club is under threat of closure and could close its doors before 2011 ends if £500,000 is not raised to help its plight, according to NME. “I’ve played all sorts of different venues over the years and this kind of show presents a different kind of challenge to performing in a stadium,” McCartney said about the concert. “I love performing and I love connecting with audiences, be it in a stadium or arena or in a club. I’m looking forward to being able to interact with fans on a face to face basis, not to mention the smell of sweat and beer!”
