Rock Picks of the Week: Soundgarden, Stone Sour, Halestorm, Tom Keifer, Adler, Love & Death, Slash

Feb 11, 2013

Soundgarden starts off rock picks with their Dave Grohl directed video for 'By Crooked Steps.' It's the second single from the new album 'King Animal', and a comedic look at the band as segway gang. The band strap on the helmets and make their way through town, sporting the attitude to go along with the segway domination.

Soundgarden are near wrapping up their U.S. tour, with multiple gig in Oakland  and Los Angeles, CA. The band will be filming the last show of the U.S. tour at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles for "Live from the Artists Den," and will also be giving away round-trip airfare & tickets for one fan & a guest to attend the Feb 17th show. To Enter the contest just go to: http://bitly.com/SGArtistsDen.

The band will also be playing some festivals, including Carolina Rebellion and Rock On The Range during May. Soundgarden will likely be taking a break when the tour wraps up, with drummer Matt Cameron on to finish and album with Pearl Jam follow with a tour.

Another great track from Corey Taylor and Stone Sour is next, as 'Do Me A Favor', from 'House of Gold & Bones Part 2", is kicking ass in rock picks this week. It's an epic track with everything you would want: adrenaline, melody, meaningful lyrics and an epic vibe. Stone Sour are at the top of the list for great current rock and both albums, videos, an online presence, album packaging, the live show and a graphic novel all contribute to one amazing project!

Stone Sour are currently on tour with Papa Roach in the U.S., and will be playing multiple festivals this Spring and Summer. Check out everything Stone Sour at their official website here.

Recent Grammy winners Halestorm are back in rock picks with their top 5 track for 'Freak Like Me', from their album 'The Strange Case Of...'. Lzzy Hale and the guys have had one hell of a 2012, carrying in 2013 and capping off with a Grammy win for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Performance for 'Love Bites (So Do I)'. The band have have released a new "thank you" video version of the song for fans that documents their past year. Watch that at Rollingstone.com

Tom Keifer of multi-platinum band Cinderella has released the first single from his upcoming solo album 'The Way Life Goes'. 'The Flower Song' has been described as having the feel of a vintage Faces cut, with a 'Maggie May' feel. I can hear it and I like it.

'The Way Life Goes' is set for release on April 30th. To says about the track: "To me, that song is about how unbelievable it is that you're able to find that one person that's perfect for you. Obviously, it's told from the perspective of a guy, but I think it's true for both men and women: When you find that one person, it's a miracle."

Keifer wrote the song with Jim Peterik, formerly of the bands Survivor and the Ides of March. Another track, 'Solid Ground', is set to be released on March 11th.

"The Flower Song is one aspect of the record," Keifer says. "The record ranges from that more acoustic side to hard-driving, high-energy rock songs, and everything in between. It's a pretty diverse album."

Keifer began writing for what would become 'The Way Life Goes' during the mid-'90s. Shortly after he began cutting tracks, his wife, Savannah, gave birth to their first child. "We took a little break right there to be parents for a while," he says. Tours with Cinderella and Keifer's ongoing vocal troubles also delayed the album's completion.

Keifer plans to launch a solo tour in February to give fans a taste of 'The Way Life Goes'. "I'm going to try to strike a balance" of new material and old favorites, he says. "I'd say it's going to be 50-50, like a preview of new songs off the record, then some Cinderella favorites, some of them done just like the record and a couple of them reinvented a little."

Keifer says his voice is doing well now, but "that's a daily battle for me. I didn't have nodes, or something that could be lasered off. The condition I have is neurological. It's something I have to deal with every day, because one of my cords just doesn't respond the way it should.

"I stick to my routine and regimen every day and try to keep them doing what they're supposed to do. I'm not going to lie to you: It's not fun, and I have my ups and downs with it."

Keifer just kicked off a solo tour in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Feb. 9, with additional shows scheduled for New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, Nashville and more.

The new track from ADLER 'Good To Be Bad', featuring a guest appearance by Rob Zombie/ex-Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5, from ADLER's debut album, 'Back From The Dead', marks a return visit to the rock picks from what in my opinion is the best music Steven Adler has released since being in Guns N' Roses. With production by Jeff Pilson (Dokken/Foreigne/War & Peace/T&N) and was mixing by Jay Ruston (Anthrax/Stone Sour/Steel Panther), and the musicianship of frontman Jacob Bunton, guitarist Lonny Paul, and bassist Johnny Martin, the album is an 11-track collection of great rock from top to bottom.

Adler will be rocking The Whisky A Go-Go on Feb. 15th in West Hollywood, CA., with more dates soon to be announced.

Look for Steven as a guest on the new 'The Ben Show' that will debut on Comedy Central on February 28th. He will appear on the debut episode that airs 10pm EST/9pm CST.

Love & Death, the new band from former KORN guitarist Brian "Head" Welch has released a new clip for the first single from their new album 'Between Here & Lost'. 'The Abandoning", is a blistering, bombastic knock to the senses.

The single and album are a fantastic return to the metal scene for Welch, with the CD consisting of 11 tracks, ranging from songs about personal struggle and triumph ('Chemicals', 'My Disaster', 'Paralyzed') to emotionally charged anthems ('Fading Away', 'Watching The Bottom Fall') and even a heavy version of Devo's 1980 hit 'Whip It'. Welch put the band together in 2009, eventually putting together the lineup that is the band today.

"This record was birthed from trials, tribulations, pain, suffering, anxiety, depression, and drama," stated Welch. "However, we came out on top and the end result is a very real, raw and honest record. We are so stoked for people to hear it! From our opening song, 'The Abandoning', to our cover of DEVO's 'Whip it', to our collaboration with Mattie Montgomery from FOR TODAY on 'I W8 4 U', It's an exciting piece of art and the listener will feel the different range of emotions with the lyrics and melodies of each song."

Look for Love & Death on tour soon.

Love & Death are:
Brian "Head" Welch
lead guitarist: JR Bareis
bassist: Michael Valentine
drummer: Dan Johnson.

'Between Here & Lost' track listing:

Love and Death 2013

Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators have released another video from one of the rock albums of the year in 2012 with 'Anastasia'. The former Guns N' Roses guitarist is now releasing his music through his own label, Dik Hayd Records,
and the band will be releasing another yet to be recorded album together at some point, probably in late 2014 or early 2015. The band is currently on a European tour, with upcoming date in Slovenia, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Russia and more in the month of February. In March the band will hit the UK and Ireland followed in May with what looks like the last tour date of the year May 11 in Toyko for Ozzfest with Black Sabbath. Vocalist Myles Kennedy will then get back to work with Alter Bridge, but should record another album with Slash and the band in early 2014.
