The Cult kick off this week’s rock picks with the first track released from the new album ‘Choice Of Weapon,’ which will be released on May 21st. ‘For The Animals’ features Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy at their best and continues the distinct sound The Cult always deliver. The Cult have always had my respect, but Ian and Billy say it’s about time the band were given the respect they deserve.
In an interview in the latest issue of Classic Rock, Cult guitarist Billy Duffy claims the band have “had very little recognition”, while frontman Ian Astbury rails about “some brutal things” that have been said in the past, including uncalled for jabs against his mother. The British music industry has shunned The Cult throughout the band’s career, Astbury says. “I think Billy and I have been invited to one music awards event, which was the Kerrang! party about 10 years ago.”
Duffy adds: “Not that I picked up the guitar to win awards, but when you see the amount of shite out there that gets all these things. It’s not been the easiest of rides as The Cult. We’ve really had very little recognition, and I think we’re just destined to be one of those underground bands.”
“It doesn’t rankle with me [now],” Astbury says. “When I was younger I really cared about being accepted and being a part of it. It just didn’t go that way for us. I think we just sort of kept out in the field, so to speak. Maybe that’s just the nature of who I am. Maybe I kept us out there. Sometimes it’s nice to feel a part of what’s going on.
The singer continues: “There’s been some brutal things said about me as an individual and the band as a whole. In one article it said my mother ‘must have been sniffing glue when she gave birth’ to me. One of the worst things to do is to put down someone’s mother. Especially my mother. I watched my mother die in squalor in a Glasgow tenement. She died of cancer. That was pretty brutal. I was a young musician as well. I was in my early 20s, so getting that kind of stuff thrown at you was pretty heavy.”
“Johnny Marr [Smiths guitarist] said to me once that I almost tell it too plain,” Duffy says. “He said that he’s read interviews where I really tell it like it is, and he doesn’t necessarily know whether: A) anybody wants to hear it like it is or, B) whether that serves me as best as I should. But I don’t really know how to do it any other way.”
Astbury concludes: “It’s weird when you’re being interviewed, because you want to be as honest as you possibly can but even in the depths of yourself you’re going: ‘I can’t say that.’ There are some things you shouldn’t share. There are some things I share that are dangerous to share.”
The video for ‘For the Animals’ reflects the socially and economically divided world that we find ourselves facing. Ian Astbury said about the clip: “‘For The Animals’ is a metaphor for people existing in a realm outside of structured society and what cultural editors deem to be relevant. It could be the feral punk rock kids squatting in abandoned homes or the spirited individual who has little regard for social conventions. It’s for people who choose not to tow the party line or try to fit in. It’s for the free-thinkers who are creative and dynamic.”
The video captures the rising tensions and frustration of a growing group of disenfranchised youth. The provocative clip, from visionary director Michelle Peerali and starring hot young actress Hanna Mosqueda as the lead character, portrays the 19-year-old protagonist transforming from a lost and abandoned youth, overwhelmed by the state of the world large and at her own poor economic status and broken family at home, into an empowered strong woman who finds her inner strength in the end.
In the film clip, we see the lead character navigate a chaotic world looking for an answer only to realize in the end that what she was looking for all along was within her the whole time. “She realizes that the only solution for change is actually within her. It’s about her self-awareness, inner strength, and waking her internal life, realizing she has to take command of the situation and has the power to break through,” says Astbury, who appears in a cameo role along with band mates Billy Duffy (guitar), John Tempesta (drums), and Chris Wyse (bass). “In the end, she finds others who feel the same way. The message being, ‘if you feel you don’t fit it, it’s okay. There are others out there. The tribe is there.'”
As Astbury sings in “For The Animals”, the song and film clip is “for all the fucked up children staring down the barrel of a gun,” a real and metaphorical image, the social, economic, and environmental cards this generation of youth has been dealt. It’s a theme that is put into sharp focus by an aware Astbury on the band’s new album, “Choice Of Weapon”, due May 21 on Cooking Vinyl.
“Your choice of weapon can be anything you use to deal with your world. It could be self-knowledge. I think we’re at a crossroads, as individuals and as a society, to define our intentions in life. What do you choose to do with your life? What do you need to really flourish? How do I not get stuck being a slave to convention? And as the character in the film clip writes on the wall, ‘How many more ways will they find to reinvent boredom?'”
Megadeth have released the next single ‘Whose Life (Is it Anyway)’ from the album ‘TH1RT3N’ with a new lyric video. A song about fighting supression, keeping freedoms and individualism. Getting ready for a revolution with this one.

Megadeth will be performing their 1992 album, ‘Countdown To Extinction,’ in its entirety at the Pepsi Center in Mexico City, Mexico on September 19, and at the Arena VFG in Guadalajara, Mexico on September 21. Local act RAXAS is confirmed as the support act for both shows.
Nickelback’s ‘This Means War’ is up next. It’s the third single from the ‘Here And Now’ album, and it is a crunchy rocker. Nickelback have now sold over 50 million albums worldwide and are the leading selling foreign group in the U.S. in the 2000’s after the Beatles (they are Canadian you know). The band got their name from bassist Mike Kroeger, who was working at a Starbucks, and when giving change to customers, would say “Here’s your Nickel back.” Regardless of what you think of Nickelback, I’m liking the fact that they continue to make fun of the comments the haters post. They have obviously embraced and know who they are, what they do, and the niche they fill. I am not a hater and appreciate that in this digital music age, Chad Kroeger and the guys have found a way to continually put out hit songs, albums and videos, don’t give a shit what anybody thinks, and on top of that will engage the haters.

“The One That You Hated,” the debut single from former Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler’s new band, Adler is next up in Rock Picks. The video features the band performing the track while scantily-clad, heavily tattooed women dance around them.
It’s a solid track from what is probably the best band Adler has put together since his departure from Guns N’ Roses. “The lyrics are about two people that are no good for each other, but for whatever reason won’t break up,” frontman Jacob Bunton told Rolling Stone about the song. “Maybe it’s the sex, maybe it’s the convenience, maybe they’re just scared to move on and start over, but a lot of people seem to be attracted to the people that they hate. Love and hate are intimately linked within the human brain.”
Bunton added that former GN’R guitarist Slash, who makes a guest appearance on the forthcoming album, got to check out the track. “One night Slash was at the studio and we played him a couple of the songs,” says Bunton. “When this song started playing, he was grinning ear to ear, so we knew either it’s a kick-ass song or it’s so bad we’re making him laugh.”
Adler’s as-yet-untitled debut album is expected to hit stores sometime this year.
Las Vegas rockers Adelitas Way wrap up Rock Picks with their latest track ‘Critize,’ another blistering track from the ‘Home School Valedictorian’ album. Rick DeJesus, Tre Stafford, Keith Wallen, Robert Zakaryan, Derek Johnston have had quite the successful 2011-12 and continue it with this track. It has been out for awhile, but I am playing catch-up on some tracks, and this is one of them. They recently wrapped up the Avalanche tour, and are continuing with some headlining and festival dates until August 15th, when the guys will hook up for the kick-off of the Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival with Shinedown, Godsmack, Staind, Papa Roach, P.O.D., Fozzy, Redlight King, Deuce, Thousand Foot Krutch, Redlight King, Candlelight Red, In This Moment and Mindset Revolution. Dates have been announced, with venues to follow.
