Aerosmith singer appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” this morning (Oct. 27) with Matt Lauer to talk about his accident at his hotel in Paraguay, which left Tyler with a bloody mouth and missing teeth. A statement from the band blamed the incident on a bout with food poisoning, and Tyler stuck to that story.
After greeting Lauer form Argentina by phone initially by saying “Good Morning America!” (that surely made the NBC execs happy), Tyler added: “Quite frankly, I passed out, I was in the shower and I started to get sick and I fell on my face. I woke up with the water running on me wondering where the hell I was. And the next thing you know my tour manager was calling the American Embassy and finding the best hospital,” he continued. “It was like one-stop shopping. They stitched up my eye they did a little plastic surgery and they fixed my tooth all in one fell swoop.”
Tyler addressed drug usage suspicions by saying, “Being in the program that I’m in, it’s something we have to expect,” he said. “I went public with my problems only to address them head on. You know, people thinking that is natural and normal.” Lauer then asked Tyler point blank if substance abuse was involved. “No, it’s not the issue,” he insisted.
The band also released an official statement regarding Tyler’s injury yesterday: “Steven Tyler suffered minor injuries as a result of food poisoning yesterday in Paraguay. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released. Last night’s show has been postponed until today. Steven would like to sincerely apologize to his fans in Paraguay for the inconvenience and hopes to see them all tonight.” The band will be performing in Argentina tonight.
Tyler also shared a photo from right after his fall before he was treated, and then signed off with his best Jack Nicholson impression: “You can’t handle the tooth!”
Aerosmith returned to the stage on Wednesday night (Oct. 26) at the Jockey Club in Asuncion, Paraguay. The show was postponed one day after the hotel bathroom accident. Steven sported the black eye, the busted lip and the bruise on his chin, but sounded great at the show.
Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry was amazed by Tyler’s comeback following emergency dental surgery. “Steven even played harp with his busted lip,” Perry tweeted. “My mind was blown.” “Gotta hand it to Steven for playing the show tonight considering how sick was from food poisoning the night before. He’s amazing,” Perry said in a separate tweet.
