Jason Bonham exits California Breed, new drummer announced for upcoming tour

Aug 5, 2014

Drummer Jason Bonham has exited for the time being from California Breed, the band he formed with bassist and and singer Glenn Hughes after the breakup of their last band, Black Country Communion. That breakup was due to guitarist Joe Bonamassa's commitment to his solo career. Ironically Bonham is taking a break from California Breed due to his other musical obligations, including a collaboration with Phil Collins.

Glenn Hughes and Andrew Watt have chosen ex Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles Of Death Metal drummer Joey Castillo as the drummer for all upcoming dates when it became clear that Jason Bonham’s professional commitments would prevent him from being able to tour with the band. As Glenn Hughes says “We’re just excited to play live, to tour, to be in front of and with our fans. We’re very proud of our debut record and we can’t wait to share it, live and loud, with you.” The band's European tour dates start Nov. 7 in Russia.

Bonham, who has recently been touring with Sammy Hagar said there are no hard feelings on his part, stating on Facebook, “I love those guys but it wasn’t going to work for me. I will support them as I love the band I help create and Joey is great. Good luck guys.” Bonham is reportedly in rehearsals with Phil Collins for a possible tour as Phil looks to be ready to put himself back out their after his lengthy hiatus.

California Breed will tour Europe starting in November and will wrap up the slate of shows in the U.K. opening for Slash.

‘Celebrating Jon Lord’ Sunflower Jam tribute concert to be released September 26

‘Celebrating Jon Lord’ Sunflower Jam tribute concert to be released September 26

Jul 7, 2014

earMUSIC and Sunflower Jam are proud to present "Celebrating Jon Lord" recorded back in 2006 at the Royal Albert Hall in memory of the great man and musician. The DVD, Blu-Ray and CD will be released on September 26 and features Deep Purple, Bruce Dickinson, Glenn Hughes, Paul Weller, Rick Wakeman and many others.

It was in 2006 when, once a year, a group of stellar musicians and stars of rock started meeting up in London for a night of live music. The main intent was to raise money for a charity called The Sunflower Jam.
At first the rumours about these sessions with Deep Purple, Robert Plant, Brian May and Alice Cooper were too good to be true, to the point that a few thought that they were nothing else than an urban legend.
"The Jam" as it soon started to be called quickly became a cult night. A real must first of all for the artists themselves, finally free and happy to leave their commercial thoughts outside the venue and able to enjoy playing music together with colleagues, friends and maybe even secret rivals and for the audience, who often could simply not believe their eyes.

The Sunflower Jam started as an idea from Jacky Paice, who very often could count on the drumming of her husband Ian. Who would turn down playing with him?

The first editions were mainly open to guests and music business professionals that would contribute to the charity. Later "The Jam" became too good not to be available for the public.

It is in one of the earlier SFJs that Jon Lord played for the last time with his friends with Deep Purple, duetting in a peaceful "war of hammonds" with Don Airey, who had replaced Lord in Deep Purple when he decided it was enough with a life spent on the road, and after a lifetime dedicated to rock and roll, Lord left to concentrate to his first love: classical music and the combination of rock elements in it.

2014: "The Sunflower Jam" is a now a regular sold out event. The fourth one at the Royal Albert Hall.
A night of great music but also an explosion of joy and will to live.

Jon Lord sadly passed away in 2012. Just a few weeks before the release of the just finished remake of what is universally known as the first ever meeting of classical music and rock. The "Concerto For Group and Orchestra". The same composition that Purple played live in 1969 at the Royal Albert Hall.

Considering the amount of respect, friendship and love expressed on any occasion by anybody who had worked, played or simply met Jon Lord, it is not a surprise that the 2014 Jam would be dedicated totally to his music. The night turned out to be an historical moment in rock music: A full orchestra, a director - Paul Mann - crazy enough to give wonderful arrangements to a repertoire going back and forth through fifty years of music, many old friends for an unforgettable night.
The Albert Hall sold out to the last seat...

Jon’s big musical loves were in the room, once again: same venue, many years later, many of the same people involved, a million times more the amount of emotions.
For four hours Jon’s music was shining. Commotion, jokes, laughs and a lot of music came together by magic.
The result is the show you can now hear and watch.

All the wonderful musicians who played at the "Celebrating Jon Lord" Sunflower Jam have left a precious mark but how not to mention the 55 minutes finale by Deep Purple, the Purple Mk III songs played by Paice with the old friend Glenn Hughes, together with Iron Maiden´s Bruce Dickinson, Rick Wakeman’s of Yes fame, Steve Balsamo (who sang in the late Jon Lord band and in his last studio album "Concerto"), members of The Temperance Movement, ex-members of Whitesnake, Bernie Marsden and Moody, the "modfather" Paul Weller...

Everybody attending the show left the venue with an expression that clearly said "one day I will be able to say I was there"...
Now everybody will be able to see why.

California Breed 'Sweet Tea' and 'Midnight Oil'
The impressive hard rock power trio, California Breed, which consists of Glenn Hughes (vocals, bass), Jason Bonham (drums) and Andrew Watt (guitar) have released their first video and single in the U.S., and have now also put out a kick ass lyric video for a second track on their self-titled forthcoming album.

The three-man line-up got together as California Breed for the first time last year after Hughes was introduced to the newcomer from New York by their mutual friend Julian Lennon. “Julian was having an exhibition of his photographs at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in LA,” Glenn recalls, “and he said, ‘You must meet this guy, he’s the most fantastic guitarist – who turned out to be Andrew.”

Reconvening at Hughes’ Hollywood home a few days later, “The chemistry was just instant,” says Hughes. “We immediately wrote two songs together, Chemical Rain and Solo, both of which have ended up on the album. That’s when I called Jason and said you’ve gotta come down right now.”

“The energy when I walked in the room was crackling,” recalls Bonham. “I was so pleased. Glenn and I had not only really locked in as a rhythm section in BCC but we’d started writing together and we both really wanted to keep that good feeling going.”

Recording with Dave Cobb (who also is Rival Sons producer) at the producer’s own studio in Nashville, added all the finishing touches, said Glenn. “I’d gotten into Dave’s work via the Rival Sons, who I know and really love. But Dave has done a lot of great stuff. That whole Nashville trip which Dave is a part of. Well, me and Jason don’t want to sound like anyone else, we already sound like ourselves, but we felt we needed some fresh energy – and Dave absolutely brought it.”

At Cobb’s insistence, every vocal was recorded live as the band was playing. “Totally the reverse of what I’m used to,” added Glenn. “But I went into that aggressive rock soulfulness and everything down to the whispers, it was all done live! I enjoyed myself so much, just going for it.”

California Breed features equal co-writing credits among the three-man lineup. “It’s proper rock,” Hughes says, “but at the same time it’s very now. Andrew is as influenced by Mick Ronson as he is Jimmy Page.” “This kid is amazing,” says Bonham. “The first time we met I thought he looked like the white Jimi Hendrix. And he plays in the studio likes he’s onstage!”

“I grew up listening to all the grunge bands,” says Watt, “but my dad always played me The Who, the Stones and Led Zeppelin so that became my music too.

“This kid is amazing,” says Bonham. “The first time we met I thought he looked like the white Jimi Hendrix. And he plays in the studio likes he’s onstage!”

California Breed’s self-titled debut album will be released by Frontiers Records in Europe on May 16th, and in the UK and US on May 19th. It will be available as a CD, digital download and a Deluxe Edition CD + DVD featuring the bonus song 'Solo,' two video clips and a documentary. Fans that pre-order the digital download on iTunes will receive an instant download of the first single, Sweet Tea upon ordering. It is also available as a pre-order from Amazon in CD format and as a CD Deluxe Edition CD + DVD.

Check out the videos for the first U.S. single 'Sweet Tea', and the animated lyric video for the track 'Midnight Oil,' which was created by Nev Todoroic who spearheads the interactive media production company The Young Astronauts.

Says California Breed’s guitarist, Andrew Watt - "We wanted a lyric video that would make people want to watch this song in addition to just listen to it, one that would highlight the bombastic grooves of the track and convey the rhythm of the message. I turned to my friends, the Young Astronauts, whose previous videos have hundreds of millions of views, but they don’t work with a lot of rock bands and I thought THAT’S the magic, right there."

“It’s a refreshing animated video that really captures the lyrical concert and message of the Midnight Oil single,” says California Breed’s vocalist and bassist, Glenn Hughes. “We didn’t want to make a run-of-the-mill lyric video. The animation perfectly captures the raw energy, lyrical content and the message of what Midnight Oil is really all about... rock n roll!!”

Midnight Oil is the UK’s first single taken from California Breed’s self-titled debut album released by Frontiers Records in Europe on May 16th, and in the UK and US on May 19th.

Metallica 'Ronnie Rising Medley'
Metallica couldn’t pick just one Ronnie James Dio song to record for the tribute/benefit compilation 'This Is Your Life,' so they picked four. The nine-minute 'Ronnie Rising Medley,' puts together four classic Rainbow tracks that featuring Ronnie in a kick-ass tribute to their mentor and friend.

Lars Ulrich recently told Rolling Stone: “[Dio's] music is so much a part of what’s in Metallica’s DNA, the harder, edgier, blues-based hard rock from the Seventies,” he says. “It was fairly effortless to put this together, because it’s something that we were all reared on. I don’t recall sitting there in a band meeting or anything deciding what to play. Somebody starts playing Stargazer-which is sort of just like something that’s in our arsenal to jam – and then that whole period there, Tarot Woman, Kill the King, A Light in the Black-that’s just really effortless to jump into.”

Buckcherry 'Dreamin' Of You'

The latest single and video from Buckcherry's 'Confessions' album, shows the sensitive side of the band and delivers a positive message, about keeping hope and faith that the situation that it will work out with a particular person.

Vocalist Josh Todd recently told Loudwire: "It comes from being lost your whole life and feeling like you’re not a part of the majority, you know? When I was coming up I always felt like there were these little popular cliques in school and there was mainstream music, and I was never part of those types of movements. I was always on the outside looking in, and mostly by choice. It just didn’t feel right, and if something didn’t feel right for me, I wouldn’t go along with it just because other people were going along with it.

So ‘Dreamin’ of You’ is about how when you hook up with somebody and in the story there’s a love interest. There’s this kid in the story who is rough around the edges and has had kind of a colorful childhood and he meets this polar opposite of him, who on the outside, it looks like she’s got it all. She’s got all the material things and her life should be great, but on the inside, she’s a cutter. She has some dark secrets of her own, so ‘Dreamin’ of You’ is just like having hope and having blind faith that everything is going to work out."

The band continues on tour into the Summer with the following U.S. dates. Check them out if they are in your area:
Apr. 17 - Houston, TX - Scout Bar
Apr. 18 - San Antonio, TX - The Aztec Theater
Apr. 19 - Lubbock, TX - Wild West

Great White's 'Complicated' is the latest single from the band's latest release 'Elation' on Frontiers Records. The boogie-blues track is signature Great White, with fantastic musicianship by the entire band, a rockin’ guitar solo by Mark Kendall, great vocals by Terry Ilous, and a chorus that will catch you. For the new music video the band enlisted help from Mark Teague of Dream Haven Studios to create a multi-media narrative: a first for the band. “We really had a good time making the video and we hope the fans dig it. They will feel the positive energy coming from the song and video,” the band said.

With a futuristic storyline, the band appear via an orb as mini virtual versions of themselves straight off their CD. They really make a "connection" with the main character. California Breed featuring Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham and Andrew Watt to release new album May 20, watch new video ‘Sweet Tea’

Mar 23, 2014

Out of the Black County Communion ashes, another awesome power trio has formed to blow your mind. When you think of California and you think of brilliant color and bright sunlight. Think of a breed and it’s all about bloodlines and brotherhood. Put the two together as California Breed, and you have the most exciting new band of 2014, built around the foundation of legendary vocalist-bassist Glenn Hughes, drummer extraordinaire Jason Bonham and 23-year-old newcomer guitarist-singer-songwriter Andrew Watt. Mixing massive riffs, gutsy vocals and gale force rhythms, this powerful three-piece band will release their self-titled debut album May 20th on Frontiers Records. It was produced by Dave Cobb (Jamey Johnson, Rival Sons, Shooter Jennings and more).

Glenn Hughes, “The Voice Of Rock,” is a true original, a legendary icon whose credits include Deep Purple and guesting with everyone from Black Sabbath to Earth, Wind & Fire — up to his most recent collaboration in rock supergroup Black Country Communion. No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. That astonishing voice is Hughes’ calling card. The legacy of Led Zeppelin lives on in Jason Bonham, British drummer and son of Zep’s legendary John Bonham. He has inherited the best of his father’s skills while mastering his own distinctive and dynamic technique. Jason has followed his own distinctive path over the years, fronting his own successful outfits like Bonham, and playing with Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, Heart and, most recently, movie composer Hans Zimmer. Andrew Watt is a soulful singer/songwriter & multi-instrumentalist whose high-energy aggressive style & creative spirit are synonymous with New York City. Hughes says: “I live in the moment, it’s all about NOW, California Breed is exactly where I live, breathe and where my freak flag flies.”

California Breed was recorded at Cobb’s Nashville studio and features equal co-writing credits among the three-man lineup.

For what is on paper a three-piece, the sheer range of sounds and melodies you get from California Breed are breathtaking.

“I’m the oddball of the group but I’m the thing that makes us different from any other classic rock band. I grew up loving grunge music,” explains Andrew. “But my father always played me The Who and The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. I always felt like I was in the wrong generation. I used to make rock music on my own and I’d play all the instruments because I could never find anyone my age that really got it the way I heard it. Then I got to play with Jason and Glenn and I haven’t picked up anything but a guitar since!”

“What we’ve got here is a kid who isn’t a hammer-on, virtuoso,” says Glenn, “but a whole new entity. This kid grew up listening to Mick Ronson on Bowie’s records, as well as Jimmy Page in Led Zeppelin. He has a completely different take. And it’s fresh and bold and so exciting. It just gets into your blood.”
