John Densmore of The Doors will participate in an attempt to set a world record for the largest drum session in conjunction with the ‘Rock the Rhythm, Beat the Odds’ music-education initiative. The event will take place on May 18 at the College of the Canyons’ Cougar Stadium in Valencia, California.

Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart will lead the session, which is also expected to feature some surprise guests. Organizers are hoping at least 10,000 people, including 7,200 students, will be a part of the event. Participants are expected to join together to create “one long continuous rhythm.”

The Rock the Rhythm, Beat the Odds program has been providing music and rhythm instruction to sixth and seventh graders in five school districts in California’s Santa Clarita Valley. The goal of the project is to help develop the students creativity, social skills and ability to learn.
